This book is so different from other books I wasn't sure that 1) I liked it and 2) how I was gonna rate and review it.
We meet Max, a butch lesbian who is involved with Daphne, a married women who also happens to be her neighbour from when she was a kid. Their involvement is messy to say the least. It did not stop me from shipping them though even though Daphne treats Max like sh1t and I was a bit iffy about their first time. Felt kind of inappropriate to me due to the age difference.
But as the story continues their affair grows on me and I start rooting for them. Max travels around for work and meets lots of new people. She also has affairs with other women as she is considered single. It was weird to me how Elise suddenly became 'it' for Max when I could barely remember her when they had first met. Could also just be that I have a bad memory especially when there are more than 3 characters in a scene.
This book is well written and has depth. It's also rough sometimes with all the pain and grief the characters go through.
An ARC was given to me via Netgalley in return of an honest review.
Really good! The story is well written and touches some difficult subjects, which was is done with sensitivity.
I enjoyed the story, and I was kept engaged with the storyline, I found Max's character intriguing, and just needed to know more about her, but Daphines character is just awful, but as you will see for yourself, is needed for the storyline.
It's a touching story, I've given it a 4 out of 5
I looked forward to reading this book because I like the author and enjoyed her Love and Courage series but this book lost me pretty early on. I didn’t like the main character Max or her relationship with Daphne and I just could not get into it at all.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and all opinions are my own.
On my Way There was not what I expected, but turned out to be just what I needed!
This book turned out to be more of an overview of Max’s life with all of its twists and turns, as well as it’s fair share of romantic endeavours. The writing is brilliant, I felt close to Max by the end and shared in each triumph and sorrow as we went through the years of Max’s life. It covers a lot of ground in the troubles Max has faced over the course of a lifetime, so beware of some TWs.
Overall, really tastefully done. I enjoyed it!
I wasn’t sure about this book. It has many positives but overall I didn’t warm to it because I found Daphne too irritating. I wanted to give her a good shake and tell her to get a grip of her life. I did like Max, though even she annoyed me at times :-) The brightest character was Lena and the author is excellent at capturing the innocence yet maturity of a child. I loved her scenes.
The plot was different to the usual lesfic tropes and I always applaud writers who try something new. The book is well written and I will look out for other work by Ms Morrison.
I was given a copy of the book by NetGalley
Max has had a tumultuous childhood and some of her troubles follow her into adulthood. This story is more of a coming of age for Max with a bit of a romance. She has found friends in her work as a truck driver and lives a quiet life with the occasional one night stand in addition to a FWB arrangement with a married friend. When her travels take her to Lubbock she meets Trillian Adams and she begins to think about what she really wants for her future.
This unfortunately wasn't quite what I hoped or expected based on the blurb. I had a really hard time getting into the story as some of the initial background on Max is vague and the time jumps between chapters seem off with one scene ending and picking back up but a year has seeming passed in between. There is also a lot of cheating in this book which I really don't like.
The book starts out in the middle of Max's young adulthood then jumps back in time to her late teenage years and paints a very poor picture of one of the other characters in this book. Daphne comes across as very manipulative right off the bat and borderline abusive. In most books characters like this are there for a short time to provide a dramatic story arc but Daphne was very much a part of Max's story from the time she was 17. I had a really hard time understanding why Max took so much abuse and manipulation from Daphne for so long, The childhood trauma for Max does explain a bit but that explanation comes too late and is still a bit vague until the very end. I think Daphne really soured my enjoyment of this book with her constant appearances. Daphne's daughter Lena, who is also Max's god daughter, was a. nice addition though and like most of the scenes where she interacts with Max but I found it odd to refer to an 8 year old as a baby butch. That along with Daphne's antics were just too much for me.
The romance was nice but also only takes place for a small portion of the book. From about 60% to 90% it was nice getting to know Trillian and Max together. I liked Raquel and Trillian's family as well. Her backstory was interesting and I'd have liked to hear a bit more of it. I also liked a couple of Max's friends and would have like to see more of Ray and Zelda. Zelda's addition to the storyline in particular I enjoyed but the end of her arc seemed to end abruptly.
There was a dramatic event around 90% that I particularly disliked involving Daphne. I feel like these last minute break ups are overdone, formulaic and make the romance that had been building seem less sincere. Daphne's involvement just made it that much worse here. The final bit starts to go how you would expect and seems to be leading up to an interesting legal fight that just then fizzles out into a one page journal type summary of the next few years of their lives.
This book just didn't quite work for me but please read other reviews as it looks like others have enjoyed it. I have heard good things about Morrison's previous books and I may try one of those at some point as this was the first book I'd read by Morrison.
The story was ok, a more of a coming to age novel. However, it just didn't sit well with me. It revolves around cheating and using people. I would recommend as I'm sure it would appeal to someone else.
3 stars.
Thank you NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for this ARC.
This was good, but I felt it could have been better. This is a story about Maxine who's trying to find a purpose in life after her father dies. I felt that all of Maine's relationships were superficial except for the relationship she had with her god daughter, and later on with Trillion who she met while going to driving school. I really didn't like the lying and cheating from this character also there's quite a bit of manipulation going on throughout this tale. This was not necessarily a romance, more of a coming of age story I felt. I would recommend this book, but only because it was a very compelling read. I would read more books by this author in the future.
I would describe this book as Max’s life story, which happens to include a romance. I have mixed feelings about this book. I’ve enjoyed a previous book by Morrison very much (i.e. The Found Jar) and found that I again liked the writing style, but some of the story choices made it hard for me to enjoy this book and like Max (the main character). Additionally, it also doesn’t help that I have no specific interest in the life of a truck driver, so that’s on me. The situations that I was uncomfortable with mainly play out in the first half of the book and I enjoyed the second half far better.
The reason that this is not a standard romance novel, but More Max’s life story, is largely due to the fact that this book is written in first person from the POV of Max and you don’t get a lot of insight in the other main characters. I’m a fan of first person, but sometimes having more insight in other characters helps understanding their actions (whether you like those actions or not). I would have liked this insight occasionally as some of the other characters are complex and difficult to understand.
Without going into too much detail there is a lot of cheating involved which I don’t like, but to make it worse the person connected to all the cheating, Daphne, is someone I disliked very much. She came across as insincere and a user. Max and Daphne have a connection that’s based on a lot of history but I couldn’t help being annoyed by the fact that Max put up with all that. While I disliked Daphne, there are also some very likable characters and I especially enjoyed the storyline with Ray. Another thing I did enjoy is that the storyline took some turns that I did not expect immediately, it’s not a highly typical romance format.
In the second part the story takes quite a turn and luckily Daphne’s involvement takes a back seat (unfortunately she doesn’t disappear completely). This is the main reason I liked this part far better than the first part, but also Max is finally growing as a person and I started rooting for her. There is a black moment which was a bit overblown in terms of drama, but I enjoyed the second half of this book and was happy with the outcome.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Max has had a difficult life. She and her brother were attacked by their own. by their unsigned mother with his brother being killed. And Max is suffering. a head injury. Max is trying to make sense of her life and she meets Daphne, who was married, but they began seeing each other. Max wants Daphne to leave her husband, but she will not, because she has a child. Lena and Max eventually become long. Distance truck driver. in order to. escape her loneliness. I found the plot of the book. Very good. And the characters. were written excellently. Max eventually meets the least and falls in love with Elise it is difficult for her because of her younger background and the fact that she has made love with Daphne I found the best line in this book was love Neither destination. I recommend this book for all romance readers.
This is the story of Maxine Terrell. She grows up, raised by a loving single father, in the small Texas town of Pokeyville, Texas. Max is young when her father unexpectedly dies leaving her a tidy sum. She decides to buy a rig, and then trains to becomes a truck driver. This leads to encounters with others but with no particular ties. The story jumps around in time but roughly covers her life from 18 and her first love experience with a soon to be married friend (Daphne) till she is 27. She meets Elise Adams at first when she is a college student and later in law school. Elise is the only character I really liked in the story. For Max to be with her she needs to be able to open up her heart and share her past.
It is harder to read stories when characters are less likable, especially if everything is told from their POV. While Max is innately kind she is also involved in an ongoing cheating arrangement that seems manipulative and distasteful. It didn’t make me empathize or like either character involved. I did like where the book ends especially for Elise. But I didn’t want Daphne to be any part of that.
I would consider this more general fiction with a romance as Max’s story is the focus of the book. I’m also not sure why the author uses the early 2000s as the time setting as it didn’t make a difference in the story. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
I did not get what I was hoping for/ expecting with this book.
I enjoyed the previous book I read by Morrison, this one just didn’t click for me.
I’ll give you some of the reasons why it didn’t work for me:
- cheating
- time jumps
- single character first person POV
- using people
Mostly I just couldn’t connect with the main character and the storyline. It did get better around the 65%-70% point somewhere, only to take another fall into some eye roll worthy fucked up shit, pardon my language.
I was happy to see the final coupling, not happy as to how their relationship developed, devolved and evolved and all the other things. Max’s friend Daphne, if we could even call her that, is a character I’d rather see go up in smoke.
My overall feeling towards this book is annoyance, so this is where I’ll end this review.
Please find other reviews to read.
Let me start off by saying I thought there would be more about being on the road but in the beginning of the book each chapter represents a year in Maxs life starting as a teenager and her on/off relationship with Daphne. Daphne happens to be married to a man and has a baby.
Max would love more but Daphne seemingly just wants sex with Max. Daphne also is happy when she realizes Max has met other women.
For me this dragged out too long so I’m just giving a 3.
Thank you #NetGalley. #BoldStrokesBooks #OnMyWayThere for this ARC
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
This was a ok read.
Max has lot going on in her life as we follow her through her journey to young adult. Her mother was criminal insane she lost her brother Adam and although her father JT raise her and gave her good life despite what happened in her young life he died of cancer and left her heartbroken. She has a friend Daphne who was there for everything and that’s the only reason I like her but other then that she treated Max horrible but Max let her because it’s was easy then really letting anyone in but I love her bond with Daphne daughter Lena and how she tries to not let what going on with her mother affect them. Max feeling lost became a truck driving and she met some great people who help shape who she wants to become doesn’t mean it’s wasn’t hard for her to open her eyes to letting the past go and letting people in that the past doesn’t have define you learn from it but never let it consume you.
