So so so good. Big, happy sigh. The second novel in Skye Jordan's most excellent Phoenix Rising series is a keeper for sure. While it can be read alone, do yourself a favor and read book 1 (Hot Blooded) first. There's an overarching story that is critical to each couple's tale, and book 1 introduces a lot. I'd forgotten quite a bit, but it did come back to me.

Here, we have Luke (whom we met in and played an important part of book 1) and Keira. The two were both firefighters affected during the warehouse for five years prior. They'd been a couple then abs for a bit afterwards, until Keira left to join the FBI. Luke eventually joined ATF, which is how they reconnect. So, we've got the second chances trope here. Their path to reconciliation is not smooth, and I actually worried if they'd make it once or twice. Keira's mercurial back and forth can be frustrating to the reader as much as Luke, even if her rationale is sound. But Jordan works it all out beautifully.

I've read a fair amount of paranormal romance, and so many authors overuse the powers thing, defaulting to a gift over working things out in the plot. That does not happen here. The gifts our heroes have are imperfect and changing; while they enhance our heroes, they don't define them.

Oof, it's just such a good read. Can't wait for book 3.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
