Prior to this title, my only Rebecca Yarros books were Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. Let me tell you, this is completely different but equally amazing.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity for an eARC.
Five freakin' stars just because I'm not allowed to give more!
This book was phenomenal. I read it in a day and that's not normal for me. I just couldn't put it down. It drew me in from page one.
I don't even know where to begin with this story! I know Rebecca Yarros is doing amazing things in fantasy right now with Fourth Wing but the way she captures you with a contemporary romance is just as amazing. The depth and back story she gives her characters and how you get attached to them right away is what keeps me wanting to devour all of her words. The connection that Izzy and Nate share right away is addictive but then that shared trauma and how it keeps them connected, even when they try to stay away from each other is something that stays with me, even till the last page. Rebecca's writing plays like a movie in my mind and is so easy to follow while being so deep and amazing. No matter the genre she's amazing, but she did fantastic things with this particular story!
I read this novel predominately on audio. With such a wide span of time encompassed within this book, I appreciated reading dual character perspectives. The writing felt very movie style, with right place, wrong time vibes, and the narrators brought that type of listening experience alive. Overall though, I am having trouble rating and reviewing this novel. This is mostly due to the depiction of the military, the politics overseas, and how the romance was interwoven in the present day timeline. I'm unable to recommend this book at this time.
Based on all the negative reviews saying how offensive this book is. It seems to be especially tone deaf given the state of the world and I don't feel it's worth my time or helpful for me, another white woman, to read and review this book.
Are you kidding me Rebecca? This book sucked me in, spun my soul around like it was in a washing machine on spin cycle and spit it out. But in a good way? Loved it and keep trying to make everyone I know read it
I love a second chance romance but this one just did not hit for me. The plot was definitely really interesting but I could not relate or connect to any of the characters and I think that's why I was so bored throughout the whole book.
Rebecca yarros writes us a second chance love story that is a dual timeline split between DC and Afghanistan. It was fairly easy to get through and I liked the premise. Not sure I cared about either one of the main characters but still a decent read. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
"In the Likely Event" by Rebecca Yarros is a poignant and stirring narrative that explores the intricate tapestry of fate and choice. Yarros, known for her emotionally charged writing, delivers yet another compelling story that tugs at the heartstrings.
The novel opens with Izzy Astor boarding a plane, expecting nothing more than the usual holiday travel experience. However, seated next to Nate Phelan, a man with an alluring blend of rugged charm and piercing blue eyes, Izzy's journey takes an unexpected turn. Their connection is immediate and profound, and just as quickly, their lives are upended when their plane crashes into the Missouri River.
From this harrowing beginning, Yarros weaves a tale that spans years, following Nate's path into the military and Izzy's rise in the political arena. Their lives, though separate, are bound by the shared trauma and the undeniable bond formed in those critical moments before the crash. The narrative deftly alternates between past and present, revealing the depth of their characters and the growth they undergo as individuals.
Yarros' writing shines in her portrayal of the characters' emotional landscapes. Nate's protective instincts and Izzy's resilience create a dynamic that is both believable and endearing. The romance that unfolds is not just about love, but also about healing and finding strength in vulnerability.
"In the Likely Event" is more than a romance; it's a testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure and thrive amidst adversity. With its rich character development and gripping plot, Yarros confirms her place as a master storyteller in the contemporary romance genre. This novel is a must-read for those who seek a story that is as thought-provoking as it is heartwarming.
Note, a decent read, I am just not a fan of romances.
It's a quick read book. Read this if you are interested in:
- bodyguard
- second chance
- past x present chapters
- right person x wrong time
- dual POV
Wow what a great read, I did not see that ending! Had just the right amount of suspense, action and romance. A edge of the seat read! Izzy goes to Afghanistan to find her missing sister. She meets up with her on and off again boyfriend Nate who is special forces there to help with the evacuation of Americans from the embassy. With his friends he must protect Izzy from the Taliban.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you for allowing me to review
Rebecca is really good at giving me heart attacks. A book where you find your soulmate on a plane back home and then literally 90 seconds after take off...your plane is going down and crashes into the Missouri River?!!!! I was hooked Immediately, cus I mean what can keep you apart now that the worst has happened??
Time. The timing is always wrong.
Dang this was a good one, I love me some military romance books, I think Rebecca might be the queen of them!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros in exchange for my honest review and opinion. I really like the way Rebecca Yarros writes so I was very excited to be approved before all my friends to read this book. This book is absolutely amazing and left me speechless when I finished it. I have told everyone I know to read this as soon as they can!
Grab your Kleenex! Rebecca Yarros’ ability to pull you into the story is magnetic. No matter how much you promise yourself you’re only going to finish your current chapter, Yarros’ storytelling gift that great that you can’t stop when you get to the end of the chapter. In an addition to a compelling, beautiful and romantic, Yarros knows what her readers want, and her ability to create emotionally charged unputdownable storylines is the most addictive book!
Rebecca Yarros has an pleasant writing style, that is one of the only reasons that I kept on reading this book.
The book isn't bad per se but the army/war segment of this story wasn't my thing. I'm good with reading about war in fantasy but when it reflects real life, no thank you!
It was a nice and refreshing change to read a romance/Suspense lovely by Rebecca Yarros as opposed to fantasy. I listened to this on audiobpok as well and really enjoyed it.
This book is just as good as Fourth Wing although it is nothing like it! A steamy hot romance with so much tension the pages could snap. It starts on a plane and may end with your life.
Thank you NetGalley and RY for this amazing ARC!!
I will first say, I am sending Rebecca Yarros my therapy bill. Because I cried SO much!! She has such a way with words and she is so good at writing that I felt the emotions of the characters like they were my own. I felt love, heartbreak, and devastation throughout the entire book. And when it was done, I felt peace.
A poignant tale that will grip your heart and squeeze it tight, The Likely Event is a 4.13-star triumph. Yarros deftly weaves a tapestry of love, loss, and longing as her characters navigate the unpredictable waters of life. Their journey may break your heart, but it will also lift your spirit with its message of hope and second chances. Set against the stark but moving backdrop of military service and political aspiration, this book will stay with you long after the final page. Yarros has crafted an emotional powerhouse that is not to be missed.
“In the Likely Event” by Rebecca Yarros sounded really promising for me and although I didn’t read Fourth Wing (yet), I really enjoyed “The Things We Leave Unfinished”. At first, I was really engaged in the storyline and I really appreciate Yarros’ writing style. However, it felt like this book didn’t quite reach the high standard of “The Things We Leave Unfinished”, leaving me with a sense of “missed potential”. The storyline felt unnecessarily prolonged to me. I didn’t really understand why certain subplots were there, the pacing felt off at times, making it difficult to maintain a connection with the story for me.
The military setting definitely adds a unique element, but I couldn’t help having some mixed emotions about the story unfolding in Afghanistan during the refugee crisis. The use of such a sensitive and recent issue as a setting for a romantic storyline felt inappropriate at times.
Despite my reservations about certain plot elements, the characters’ evolution throughout the story was nicely done. Izzy and Nathaniel’s characters are well-developed and they undergo significant growth and development. However, I didn’t really feel connected to them and the buildup to the ending didn’t really engage me, leaving the conclusion feeling somewhat underwhelming and not as emotional as it was likely meant to be.
Overall, a decent read, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations.
Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of this book!
