Fate pushed them together from the moment they met. This story unfolds over many timelines, with the present occurring in the city of Kabul, Afghanistan. Where, once again, a pair of individuals who weren't supposed to be in Kabul at that time came face to face on the tarmac. Fate has intervened once more, but this moment is terrible for the matters they need to address. The historical timeline offers glimpses from their lives throughout the last ten years, including how they met, how they reconnected, how they fell in love, and how it all ended on a rainy night in New York. This one was interesting for me. We start off with the knowledge that an event went wrong in New York, with both characters feeling victimised that night. And just when you suspect HEA is on the way, a heart-stopping piece of importation forces you to take another look at the entire story. Don't worry, it's certainly a HEA; it's going to just take somewhat longer.

I absolutely loved it from the very first page! I didn't want to put it down. Lots of love, angst, so much emotion. I loved these characters and I'm so glad I got to read this great book.

White savior complex & military mixed in one... I wish I could rate this lower. Honestly this makes me question if I will continue her Fourth Wing series.

This is a great page-turner romance mixed with action! Izzy and Nate have great chemistry and depth in their feelings for each other. There is a military aspect that drives their relationship woes. The story is set around the end of the American mission in Afghanistan and it's chaotic ending, so this could feel too soon to read about. The reader is in the present, in Afghanistan, and taken back every other chapter to Izzy and Nate's past (almost every chapter is a cliffhanger). If you enjoy any kind of military romance, absolutely read this one.

Izzy gets on a plane to go home and is seated next to a handsome rugged man named Nate. Not expecting anyhing but a usual flight, ninety seconds after takeoff, their plane goes down in the Missouri River. After their traumatic experience, their lives have changed forever. Nate goes into a career in the military and Izzy goes into politics. Despite encounters over the years and their romance budding as each year passes, the timing never feels right to go all in. Then there is a reunion in Afghanistan where Nate is tasked with protecting her life and he will do anything to keep her safe.

In the Likely Event totally made me cry. I am not much of a crier but here we are. I am sure there are plenty of reasons as to why, but we don't have to get into that. This is my third book that I have read by Rebecca Yarros and I am very much a huge fan. This book grabs ahold of you and doesn't release its hold until the very end. Keep in mind that this is fiction and whether or not you believe the plot or ongoings are plausible or even logical, please keep your negativity to yourselves. It's emotional and infuriating, in a way that tugs at your heart. Never in a million years did I think military romance would be something I'd enjoy but hey! look at me now. If you want to get teary eyed because you need to release some pent-up frustration or if you're just a masochist and like to cry for fun, consider giving this book a read. I received it as an ARC and ended up buying myself a finished copy for my forever shelves.

Thank you NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC and giving me the chance to read and review it honestly.

Thank you for giving me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVED this book. The two main characters, Issy and Nate first meet on a plane, moments before it crashes. The two then embark on a long series of random encounters and fated meetups. Their entire 10 year relationship is filled with passion and hesitation as they live in very different worlds.

The characters were fantastic. I loved their interactions with one another and the way their entire story played out. Told through both their eyes and in different years, the story grows as you get to know the characters and their past and see, in broken spurts, how they have each come to the place that they are.

Yarros does an absolutely fantastic job of bringing characters to life with depth and believability. She weaves stories together in a way that keeps you guessing as to what exactly happened or will happen.

Also, this delivered a bit of a twist at the end that I have to say, I did not see.

Buckle up, you may experience some turbulence reading this book!
I loved this book! From the crazy beginning, where and how Izzy and Nate meet, to their serendipitous encounters that span a decade! They have so many highs and the most severe and terrifying lows (no really!!); the chemistry between these two is so undeniable and intense. There were true moments of edge of your seat, nail biting situations that propelled me forward; I couldn't put it down and just wanted to keep going!

Izzy and Sam meet for the first time on a plane that crashed into the ocean. After being rescued they go their separate ways but continue to meet up over the next 10 years. This book went back and forth between now and all of the 10 years. I donโ€™t usually care for that but in this book it seemed to work.

I don't know why people are hating on this book, it's so good ๐Ÿ˜ญ

There were a few times their lives converged after the accident but nothing really lead to anything until Nate's tasked to protect Izzy on a mission in Afghanistan.

Izzy and Nate deserve the world after all they've been through not the hate! Theirs was a slow burn but it burned steady and bright not erratic.

Absolutely loved this book. Izzy and Nate are a couple who can just not seem to get their timing right. They met for the first time, by chance, on a plane...that went down. Their subsequent meetings are by chance and fleeting but the chemistry and connection are undeniably present. The timing has never worked out for them between Nate's military career and Izzy's advancements in her career but they find their paths meet again--in Afghanistan. Can the two of them sort out their unresolved feelings? Will they finally get their chance?

Though I can recognize the issues people have with the bones of this book, as a story, I loved it--a story of chance, timing, chemistry and destiny. Is it farfetched? Sure, but I'm not reading for historical, political or current event accuracy.

I really wanted to love this book. If the romance had been set against a different backdrop, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Izzy and Nateโ€™s first meeting, their chemistry, and the idea of being tied to one person through fate/circumstance really drew me into the romance. This is also one of the few books where I actually enjoyed a split timeline.
However, the setting of the book and certain scenes gave me pause. The book is Dual-POV and split timeline, with half focusing on the MCsโ€™ past (since their meeting 10 years prior) and half focusing on their meeting in Afghanistan 3 years after they broke up. While I loved the parts that focused on their past, the sections focusing on Afghanistan just felt off. Nate at one point even says โ€œIโ€™m not that guy. โ€ฆThe guy who does the honorable thingโ€ in response to Izzy saying โ€œโ€œIf itโ€™s between me or one of the girlsโ€”โ€, with the girls being the ones they are there to evacuate. Other reviewers have explained the issues with the setting better than I can. I think the thing that bothered me the most is that Yarros set a white romance in the middle of a situation that happened 2 years ago in Afghanistan when it wasnโ€™t necessary. The events in the book that take place in Afghanistan are still recent, and they werenโ€™t her story to tell. Izzy and Nateโ€™s romance could have taken place literally anywhere else and it wouldnโ€™t have changed the core story.
Overall, I loved the story and characters, but felt that the setting just wasnโ€™t right for the story that was being told.

Some people find their person and can't let them go, no matter how ill-suited their situations are and how hard they try. That's the truth for Izzy and Nate. Bonded by a major event ten years ago, they live for the brief periods they can be in each other's lives, always telling themselves that they can't be anything more.

That is until Special Ops Sergeant Nate sees congressional aide Isa step off the plane in Kabul, Afghanistan. She shouldn't be there, especially with that other man's ring on her finger, and Nate will do everything he can to push this woman away, whilst desperately holding onto her while he can.

Alternating between their charged interactions in a war zone and their previous encounters over the preceding decade, it's easy to see why they are bound up in their obligations, and also each other's emotional weak spot.

This book is what would have happened if Twilight's Edward hadn't become a vampire and had to balance an all-consuming relationship alongside his military career (this is said with love).

The writing style is truly alike to Meyer's; it's full of gushy declarations, builds a microcosm around the protagonists and uses every imaginable description of a person's eyes. Nate is inhumanly idolic, but a sucker for this woman. Izzy/Isa/Isabeau is charmingly flawed but endearing nonetheless.

And yet, it is compulsively readable, utterly absorbing and full of heart. As such, finishing this book leaves one feeling uplifted but in need of a stare-at-the-wall fifteen minutes.

There's much I disliked about this book.
There's much I adored about this book.

Love grows and expectations get shattered in this love story that spans decades and finds culmination during a war.

A lot of beauty sleep was sacrificed to the reading gods here, I just couldnโ€™t put it down. For all its flaws (mentioned by other reviewers) it was a gripping tale that had me hooked right from the start.

I am not a huge fan of going back and forth between timelines, but as the past got closer to the present and things heated up more, I really didnโ€™t care anymore which year we were in, I just wanted to know where it was going.

Watching Izzy and Nateโ€™s friendship grow and evolve was exciting. It bothered me a bit that though they kept in contact, and they obviously couldnโ€™t forget each other, they didnโ€™t spend a lot of time physically together and when they did, it was in extraordinary circumstances, like going to Fiji, or reuniting in a war zone.

But I was very happy when, after all their own growth and soul searching, they managed to make their way back to each other. And that incredible twist at the end had me gasping.

The story is told by Izzy and Nate in turns, each using the first person. I can recommend this if you like a slow-burn, steamy romance that includes dealing with issues such as war and PTSD.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received this book from netgalley for a fair and honest review.

This is my first time reading anything from this author and after reading it I am sure it will not be my last. This book was well written and the character development was phenomenal. I felt like I was watching a movie vs reading a book. My typical genre is thriller but sometimes a well written drama is needed and this book hit the mark 10 fold.

Rebecca Yarros has such a captivating writing style. I was instantly gripped by the story and couldn't put it down! In The Likely Event is an epic love story that stayed with me long after I finished reading. She weaves the story of Izzy and Nate across many years, cutting between past and present but in an easy to follow way that makes the story unfold in layers. There's action and high stakes amongst the romance which made the it hard to stop reading and I ended up reading it in one night to see how things would turn out. Izzy and Nate's past encounters had me smiling, crying, and on the edge of my seat hoping Nate would survive each deployment and they would finally get the timing right and live happily ever after together. They have such strong chemistry which made the tension and misunderstandings between them in later years really pull at my heartstrings, especially as more layers of their story were revealed. This isn't the tyle of book I'd usually read, but I absolutely loved it and will definitely be looking to read Rebecca Yarros's past books now too. I would 100% recommend this book and can't stop thinking about it.

This quote had me swooning.
โ€œEvery second Iโ€™ve had with you is a gift Iโ€™ve never deserved.โ€

What a beautiful and serendipitous story about two souls who were always destined for one another but whose lives never seemed to perfectly align.

This was a lovely story about true love and destiny but at the same time it broke my heart. So much time, years, were wasted on them not being together. But it also seemed like such a realistic scenario, of wasted time with someone you loved but life somehow always got in the way.

After surviving a plane crash, Izzy and Nateโ€™s lives would never be the same. After their near death experience they would forever share a bond. But they led two separate lives that led them to completely different career paths. Nate chose a career in the military and Izzy was led into a career in politics, and neither of them wanted the other to sacrifice their careers to force things work between them.

They would meet briefly over the years but it never seemed to be the right time to upend each others lives and settle down. And a few times they just so happen to accidentally be in the same place at the same time. Once again, theyโ€™re brought together and in dangerous situation, this time in Afghanistan. Nate is assigned with protecting Izzy and her company. And heโ€™ll do anything to make sure she gets back home safely.

And I am so grateful to Rebecca Yarros and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this wonderful ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts. I canโ€™t thank you all enough.

When Izzy Astor gets on a plane to go home, she isnโ€™t expecting much. Itโ€™s the usual holiday travel experience: busy, crowded, stressful.

Then she spots her seatmate, who is anything but ordinary. Nate Phelan sports dark hair, blue eyes, and a deliciously rugged charm that Izzy canโ€™t resist. Their connection is undeniable. Izzy never believed in destiny before, but she does now.

Just ninety seconds after takeoff, their plane goes down in the Missouri River.

Their lives change. They change. Nate goes on to a career in the military while Izzy finds her way into politics. Despite a few chance encounters over the years, the timing never feels right.

Then comes a high-stakes reunion in Afghanistan, where Nate is tasked with protecting Izzyโ€™s life.

Heโ€™ll do anything to keep her safe. And everything to win her heart.

Loved Izzy & Nate's story! Their journey wasn't an easy one but was so worth it. This book had all the feels & will take you on an emotional journey like no other! Highly recommend.

Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
I'm not usually drawn to military-related stories but I enjoy this author and am glad I was given the chance to read this. It's beautifully written and I loved the dual POVs and dual timelines. Izzy and Nate were great characters, you really root for them the whole way. I was expecting more about the plane crash. The chapters that take place in Afghanistan read more like a suspense novel than a romance, very edge of your seat and fast paced. The epilogue was a little too short but just what you wanted to see happen. Highly recommend.

Izzy and Nate meet on a plane at the age of 18, there is a connection but the timing isnโ€™t right!
They continue to weave in a out of each others lives and again the timing isnโ€™t right

Now Izzy is on a job in Afghanistan and Nateโ€™s job is to protect her!

Second chances, a slow burn, all in all a good read

In the Likely Event centres round Izzy and Nate who first meet on a plane in 2011. The story then follows their relationship through to 2021 where Nate is stationed in Kabul and is put in charge of Izzyโ€™s security.

After seeing all the online hype around Fourth Wing, also by Rebecca Yarros, I was so excited to read this. Furthermore this book contained some of my favourite tropes such as second chance romance. I liked the writing style and thought that the pacing was done really well.

However I really didnโ€™t buy into the relationship between Izzy and Nate as it felt largely built on lust. We only see them spend around one full month together in the ten years they know each other which made it very difficult to believe that theyโ€™re in love.

I found the use of miscommunication in this book infuriating and really hated how Nate would often tell Izzy how to feel rather than listening to her.

Overall this book wasnโ€™t for me as I didnโ€™t enjoy the romance. However I would be open to reading other books by this author as it was well written.
