I honestly don’t know where to start. I’ve literally just finished reading the last page in the epilogue, since I started reading the book earlier today I have been hooked. This book has reminded me that things happen for a reason, life can be cruel but life can also be beautiful.

Rachel has created this enthralling story between two lovers, throughout the book you’ll follow Nate and Izzy reaching different milestones in life. It’s frustrating at times but in a way that made my heart ache. I loved every page. This is my first read from Rebecca but it definitely won’t be my last. Easily one of my favourite reads from 2023. If you’re looking a book to fill the void (and then some!) this is the one.

This is the second book of R Yarros for me, the first was the fourth wing. I can say that I am late to meet her work.
From the cover, I anticipated that this is a romance book, and I was afraid to be emotionally shaken afterwards, but I wasn’t, and I am grateful for that.
The story is almost a surreal as a fairy tale, nobody loves that insistently, but the flow, how things turned out, were all amazing.
The alternating pov’s and also alternating timelines (one from the meeting and one from the actual time) were so good. Switching the style from a woman to a man was also quite good, nothing irritated me.
Thanks for the ending, thats all I can say..

I loved this book!

Timing was never right for Izzy Astor and Nate Phelan despite the intense and instant connection they had when they met ten years ago and the sporadic times they saw each other during the following years. That is until they are unexpectedly reunited in Afghanistan when Izzy is in search of her sister and Nate is hired to protect her life. Will this finally be their opportunity?

This was an emotional and heartwarming romance that brought so many feels. I loved how the story was told in a dual timeline and dual POV format, allowing us to get glimpses of their relationship throughout the years. Teddy Hamilton and Carly Robins did an amazing job with the narration, and I think they really enhanced my enjoyment of the book!

What to expect:
-Military hero
-It was always you
-Long distant relationships
-Forced proximity
-Dual timelines

Love the romance of the Fourth Wing? Read this excellent Yarros novel. It has been pushed a bit as a military novel and I was hesitant to pick it up but rest assured it is heavy on romance. Izzy and Nate meet in the most unlikely of events. They are forever linked but due to circumstance only see each other for a few days out of the year. Serendipity and a bit of planning brings them together again in Afghanistan, is it too late for love?

Super fun and engrossing, you will eat it up!

I went into this story with high expectations and this book met them all and more. I loved the dual timeline between Nate and Izzy’s past and the present because it was so well done and added much more depth and understanding to their stories. I’m not typically a fan of instant love but I could not put this book down. The characters were very well written and authentic. This story is fast paced, fun, and heartbreaking at the same time.

Rebecca Yarros delivered with this contemporary romance I could not put it down. I was invested in Izzy and Nate's story from beginning to the end.
I enjoyed the dual timeslines which in my opinion add an element of angst to the story and just really made it a page turner.

In the Likely Event hit all the right notes for a perfect romance novel. The storyline was predictable, but in a way that felt comforting; you were able to truly enjoy the characters and their development without worrying about what comes next. The last 25 or so pages were very gripping, though, and I was on the edge of my seat until the end.

Izzy's naivete about the realities of military life and sacrifice were incredibly frustrating, but that made Nate's stoicism and belief in his duty to his loved ones and his country all the more admirable. To me, Izzy represented the idealistic view of military life while Nate represented the realities, and this juxtaposition made for a very compelling read.

I wish we had more time with Serena. I couldn't tell if her martyred outlook on her work as a photojournalist was admirable or naive due to her privilege, and I think knowing this would have given more insight into Izzy's outlook on Nate's line of work.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and and Montlake for allowing me an e-arc copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Well, this was my first Rebeca Yarros books and it most certainly won’t be my last (Fourth Wing I am coming for you). However, there was a lot about this book that I liked and a lot that I didn’t like.

I very much liked the premise of this book, two fated to meet people reuniting after one of the most traumatic experiences either of them had ever had. To explain, they both meet on a flight and the flight ends up crashing. He helps to save her life, and pretends to be her husband to go with her to surgery. However, he ends up having to leave and she struggles to remember his name. Go forward a couple of years, and again another chance meeting has them reuniting. They keep coming back together again and again, only ever getting to spend a few nights with each other at a time. It was written beautifully, especially the past chapters where you see them reuniting. The chemistry they also have is great, and the build up for the scenes is amazing.

But for things I didn’t like, trope… military romances are really not my thing. Especially when in this story it’s a fairly recent issue, and the cause for them coming together was this issue… it just really didn’t sit right with me at all. Also, the way she is so willing to sacrifice EVERYTHING to wait for this man pretty much barely existing while he was away from her, and he won’t fucking bite the bullet and leave the fucking military??? Even though he hates it???? Christ, it made me want to pull my hair out.

There was both good and bad sides to this story, but it has really made me realise that military romances are not for me and I should not read them. However, as I said before, this won’t stop me from reading anything by this author again… it just definitely will not be another military romance.

A second chance trope plus an initial meeting under dramatic circumstances made this seem like promising material for thus-far-thwarted romance. Hence, after Fourth Wing, I wanted to read this book, figuring it would be a beautiful love story set against a meaningful backdrop.

I mean, I assumed that was why the story was set in Afghanistan, since it is not really an ideal place for a romance (unless it's a really harrowing, epic one that ends tragically but remains embedded in the reader's memory).

And quite honestly, there IS a great need for people in conflict countries to be portrayed as human beings, and in ways other than in broad, general and ignorant brushstrokes. So I thought there would at least be a few good Afghan supporting characters.

So...my bad.

The love story was fine, fairly typical. Though the macho hero was a bit over-the-top in the pride he took in being a killing machine. But I actually think this would have been better done as a love story set somewhere in America, with maybe political dangers for Izzy to be protected from, rather than reducing a profoundly miserable situation for the Afghan people into a love story backdrop for WASP-type Americans. So, to be honest (and putting it courteously), this really didn't work for me.

Wow! Thanks netgalley for the chance to read this book. After the fourth wing I knew I had to read all of Rebecca’s books! This one did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this book even with the war scenes which isn’t like my normal genre. It was written so well and I loved the story between the two main characters. The book ended exactly as it should have.

So good! The back and forth in time kept the story alive. I loved it!
The MCs had great chemistry and the silent scenes with no dialogue were amazing! I could feel the tension as if I was there.

I really liked the different setting and the fact that the MMC is military!

Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake for providing me with a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Rebecca Yarros is the writer of the moment; and In The Likely Event does not disappoint. A thrilling heart wrenching romance that will have you laughing and crying out loud.

"If no one's trying to kill you here, then that means I'm doing my job over there." - This is where I DNF.

What in the white savior complex. We're in freaking 2023. Let's stop pretending that US military and politics are what will save everyone, when more often than not they're fucking things up. America has its part of the blame when it comes to the history of Afghanistan.

This book is problematic af. Other reviews on Goodreads have pointed that out beautifully, so I'm just gonna leave mine as is.

Downloaded a copy from Netgalley for review. All opinions are my own.

I've been reading Rebecca Yarros's military romances since long before she blew up with Fourth Wing, and she never disappoints. This story is poignant and heartbreaking, with more than a touch of magic. The premise of their meet-not-so-cute was so interesting, and I really enjoyed seeing the early development of their relationship, as well as the pain that follows years later. I would say the only reason it wasn't a five-star for me is that I'm not a big fan of dual timelines, and in this case, by the end, I really wanted to move on to the current state of their relationship rather than continue to dig into the details of the past so late into the book. But a great read overall, and I definitely recommend it.

Weak and thin, even as far as cheesy romance goes. Utilizes all the tropes: unrealistic meet cute (how many of us have survived a plane crash...), right person at the wrong time, second and third and fourth chances, mental health representation, etc. Given how often the two protagonists cross paths over the years, a continuous timeline would have worked better - the dual POV and jumping back and forth in time just disrupts the flow.

Toxic Love in Wartime.

Wow. What did I just read? I’m not sure what I expected, but it wasn’t a badly written romance (could Nate have been any more toxic?) using the war in Afghanistan as a prop. The number of times that either Nate checks out Izzy, or the two of them share a sexy-time moment seconds after discussing someone dying or something else pertaining to the war (literally from one second to the next, talking about a friend’s brutal death and then leering at her hungrily). And referring to himself grandiosely and repeatedly as the hero doing the dangerous work that allows people like her to sleep at night?

I try to avoid going lower than a 3 star rating, because someone took the time to write a book. That’s not easy, and can mean putting years of one’s blood, sweat, and tears into it. So, I’m going to refrain from rating this and simply say that I don’t recommend this one.

Thank you NetGalley and Montlake for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.

The dual timeline and slow burn romance really kept me interested and eager to learn what would happen next. I loved the back and forth between the past and present and trying to piece together what happened between Izzy and Nate.

As a military girlfriend, I did appreciate the storyline and military romance piece of the story. I liked being able to relate with my own relationship with the long distance aspect.

The storyline is so interesting from the plane crash to where it takes the characters. The fact that Izzy and Nate have barely spent a week together and are still so in love seems insane but also perfect for a hopeless romantic.

In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros is a great book that I read in one sitting and wanted to immediately re-read.

I will admit to being a little prejudiced - I'm from St. Louis (and live by the airport 😳) and my husband and I had a long distance relationship for several years while he was stationed at Ft. Benning. I was rooting really hard for Izzy and Nate from their intros.

The book starts with Nate missing his leave because of a sick team member and seeing his assigned person to protect on a diplomatic mission replaced at the last minute by none other than Izzy, who he hasn't seen in three years

Izzy and Nate meet on a fateful plane trip originating in St. Louis, she is heading back to Syracuse University and Nate is heading to Ft. Benning, GA for basic training. Izzy is terrified of flying and despite it being his first flight, Nate tries to settle her nerves. She tells him that most plane crashes occur in the first three minutes and the last eight. Nate offers to hold her hand and countdown the three minutes and it's going well...until it isn't.

Nate helps save Izzy after the plane crashes into the Missouri river and then says he is her husband so that he can go with her to the hospital. He is forced by a military liaison to leave the hospital before she comes to at the hospital, but meets her beloved sister, Serena on the way out.

Fast forward a few years and they are still thinking about each other and by chance meet up again and the attraction is still there. They continue to hit and miss each other through the years until something happens that tears them apart.

The book has dual POV and flashbacks that thread seamlessly really well to weave their backstory. I loved every part of this book, from the names given to the Special Ops guys (a little Reservoir Dogs homage?) to the special relationship Izzy and her sister have.

I'm a sucker for military romances, torn apart and brought back together couples, and a dark haired, light eyed hero.

This would make a terrific movie!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I can't wait to be able to buy this book for my keeper shelf and hope it comes out in audio at the same time.

I loved this book.

From the second I started reading it. I couldn’t put it down. The two main characters are so well written and you root for them the whole time.
The ending with Nate’s friend made me cry. Overall, a great read and I’d definitely recommend it.

This book was absolutely amazing from start to finish. I am so thankful that I was able to get my hands on this. Rebecca Yarros was a new to me author this year and let’s all be serious… Fourth Wing did NOT disappoint anyone. I will be reading anything and everything she writes from now on.

I don’t want to give too much away but you will not regret this purchase.
