I’m not really into military romances but the first half definitely got me into the story! Enjoyed the dual POV and the ‘never right timing’ trope. I cried a little, stressed, and enjoyed Izzy and Nate’s story overall!!
I picked this up after loving Fourth Wing by this author. I know this is a whole other genre, but I liked her writing so I was intriuged to pick it up. While not my favorite romance of all time, its definitely still enjoyable and on the more deep end of romances. Emotional and moving but still having its bright moments.
3.5 stars.
There's a lot about this book I liked and some things I didn't quite care for.
I don't particularly care for political aspects and talks about war and that was a huge part of this book. I liked the characters but they are both terrible at communication and so many issues could've been solved with a conversation. Also Nate prioritizes his job over everything and I think he almost uses that as an excuse to be a jerk to Izzy. Not saying he should've been expected to not pursue his dreams but he kind of avoided everything else to do it. Even visiting his mother...
If I were Izzy I would've given up on a relationship with Nate very early on but I can see why she didn't.
The whole brought together by fate is cute and the chance encounters multiple times I loved. Overall the story was cute and I don't expect characters to not have flaws but I honestly think Izzy could've done better.
This was my first Rebecca Yarros book, but definitely not the last. The chemistry between Nate and Izzy was great. They definitely met in an unique way. I liked the double timeline, too. I think the decisions the characters made regarding their relationship were valid and made sense, although the radio silence before Afghanistan was kind of stupid? Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story very much, I read it in one sitting.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of the book.
Too high expectations and bitter disappointment
"In the Likely Event" is a military romance by Rebeccs Yarros and tells the story of Izzy and Nate. My first Rebecca novel was Forth Wing (yes, no one expected that 🤣) and after falling head over heels in love with Xaden and Violet I couldn't wait to read more from the author. I expected an exciting and emotional story that inspires and enthralls me. Unfortunately, I then had to realize that the story was neither emotional nor exciting.
For me, Izzy wasn't a protagonist that I immediately liked. Her behavior in the war zone found that simply impossible and in real life nobody would have gone along with it. She just behaved like a 15-year-old girl going through puberty who desperately needs to get her way. Nate had so much potential. He could have been so charismatic, unfortunately he was just a superficial alpha male that didn't make my knees go weak.
The flashbacks drove me insane. Again and again I was torn from my flow of reading by these short episodes. For me, the sparks of the two did not jump over. It was all so superficial with a lot of Rambazamba and that's why I got really annoyed by Izzy and Nate after a short time. Also, everything was always so quick and easy, which made it incredibly rewarding and boring.
That's why "In the likely Event" gets 2 out of 5 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Izzy and Nate meet on a plane at the age of 18, there is a connection but the timing isn’t right!
They continue to weave in a out of each others lives and again the timing isn’t right
Now Izzy is on a job in Afghanistan and Nate’s job is to protect her!
Lift this story out of Afghanistan and put it anywhere else (not a war zone) and it would have been a better read IMO. Nothing that other reviewers haven't already said about this.
I have yet to read other Rebecca Yarros works but this left me apprehensive about reading them in case similar happens there....
This romance read was more of serious and intense me than I normally read but I very much enjoyed it. It will make you feel a whole bunch of feels and will have you desperate to know what exactly happened to these two and how they got where they are. This read is a dual POV, past &present timeline and has ADHD and PTSD rep in it. (4 and a half stars)
In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros is a standalone. It's the story of Izzy and Nate. Part of the story is taking part in the past and part in the now, well 2021 XD. I loved their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written.
a split time line story following two people that try to find their right time and place.
i enjoyed the writing and i liked the characters.
i liked how this book pointed out some obvious challenges in the military/army - like how nate doesn’t want to get professional help to get through the trauma of surviving a plane crash because he doesn’t want to be labeled crazy or as unstable and with that make his career harder.
why wouldn’t especially people that have a lot of traumatic things happening a lot to them not be offered psychological help without having to fear for their career?
i also enjoyed the sister relationship A LOT.
Izzy and serena were a wonderful duo to read about and see a realistic but absolut lovely sibling relationships that shows love and support but also knowing when it’s time to let the other person do what they need to do even if the other one doesn’t like it.
the romance itself was a bit strange - a mixture of insta-love and slow burn that for some reason worked? at least for me.
all that being said:
this book has a lot of flaws and i didn’t really like how it portrayed a war zone.
for an author that is married to a soldier or someone that was a soldier for 20 years the war zone moments… let’s just say i didn’t love those moments.
how the characters behave is quite frustrating on some moments and mostly because it would be so easy to solve with just a real conversation.
but all that being said:
i enjoyed this a lot!
i think it was a nicely done romance that had other things happen as well and was overall done well.
4.5 ⭐️ I recommend going in blind. Don’t even read the blurb.

What an epic, tragic love story.
My heart was so heavy reading Nathaniel and Isabeau story.
It’s raw, it’s real, I actually felt fearful many times throughout.
My anxiety was high. The reading experience was brilliant.
The love story is a second chance love, set over a period of years.
The plot 5 ⭐️ this is where the fear came in. I haven’t read many military romances and I definitely haven’t read one that is set in Afghanistan. I found it so interesting. Written so well. I love it all.
I wish there was more. I would have loved to read them together after.
Quotes - “I have one weakness on this entire planet, and you’re feet away when you’re supposed to be halfway round the globe.”
“This felt like coming home.”
“You’re not getting out. You’re getting in deeper.”
Highly highly recommend to everyone.
Rating: 5 stars ⭐️
This book was such an emotional rollercoaster but I loved Izzy and Nate so much!!! 🎢
I can understand, given that this book touches heavy topics, why it makes it not for everyone but I suggest that you give it a chance and form your own opinion.
This story is the perfect example for “right person, wrong time”.
You follow the main characters Izzy and Nathaniel. They sat next to each other in the plane and had an instant connection. They talked about how he wanted to join the army and that Izzy wanted to see her family but after take-off, the plane crashed in the Missouri River..
After that tragic incident, you follow them as they reconnect and give their love a second chance.
This story has dual pov and timelines which makes it an even more interesting read.
I'm not gonna spoil the plot, just know that if you want an amazing but heartbreaking read, this is the book to go. 💔
There are TW for this book (war, violence, death, abuse, blood…)
Thank you to Netgalley, Rebecca Yarros and the publisher for providing me with this copy. All opinions are my own.
Well, that was a crescendo of angst.
I am a ball of tension on finishing this story of Izzy and Nate. Their beginning was horrendous, their middle was painful and their ending was...you'll have to read to find out. Their story was told in present (Kabul, 2021) and past periods stretching back over a decade. All this time, Nate was in the military.
These two had a connection built on that desperate beginning but the intensity as their times together passed just increased exponentially. Nate was frustrating, Izzy had her moments too, no more than with d***face.
How Yarros ratcheted up the tension was frankly, quite cruel to my adrenaline stores. The 'present' was the demilitarisation of Afghanistan and handing over to the Taliban. My heart was in my mouth at various junctures and while I'm sure this was romanticised to some degree, the reality of what was happening during that time period came through the pages.
This read was a painful enjoyment and I won't forget it soon.
Thank you to Montlake Books for the review copy.
I'm probably one of the few book lovers who has yet to read 'Fourth Wing', so this was my first Rebecca novel.
I was pretty invested from chapter one. What happened? How did that happen? Who's that? It keeps you wanting more, needing more.
Nate was just adorable. Their story. Their relationship was beautiful and tragic and complicated and perfect. It's everything you want to read in a book.
I loved the concept, and the setting and the plot lines that made it so different from other romance books.
I binged this in less than a day. A super easy for me to give 5 star read.
Can I get a book about Serena now please?
Another absolutely brilliant book by Rebecca Yarros! I loved it from start to finish, this is one hell of an author.
Thank you to Netgalleyand the publisher for allowing me early access to this title.
In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros is a captivating dual POV love story that intricately weaves together elements of politics, war, family, loss and mental health. It introduces readers to the intertwined fates of Izzy and Nath, whose paths continuously cross in a tale reminiscent of Delicate by T Swizz!
Rebecca Yarros, known recently for her immensely popular novel Fourth Wing showcases her storytelling prowess once again in this novel. For those who haven't delved into Yarros' works before, this book provides an excellent entry point into her romance fiction.
The narrative unfolds through the eyes of both Izzy and Nath, offering readers a deep and intimate understanding of their characters and emotions. Their connection feels fated, drawing readers into their love story, which is beautifully layered with complexities from the backdrop of politics and war. The inclusion of family dynamics and themes of loss adds depth to the story, making it emotionally resonant.
This is a must-read for fans of contemporary romance, and proves to be an enchanting introduction that will leave you eager to explore more of her literary offerings. A solid 4.5.
I DNF-ed this at the 30% mark as I realized this is not for me. I didn't love the setting, military based, and I was annoyed the girl was so swayed by her parents.
I loved how the story was told in past and present timeframes. The story is told in both points of view of Izzy and Nate as we go through their journey. Rebecca Yarros is a fantastic writer.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Cute book. Liked the plot. Something different and enjoyed the characters. I would recommend this as a cute romantic story with a slight twist at the end.
Ok straight off, I rarely read romance, its just not a genre I am drawn to BUT a book with a plane on the cover and a plane crash as part of the plot.... SOLD. I don't make these rules , I just live by them. Also, this author is all over Bookstagram with Fourth Wing ( another genre of book I do not read) so I thought I would take a chance on this one. For the first 100 pages, I believed I made the right choice. This book started so strongly, the characters were instantly likeable, the plane, the dialogue........... I was hooked.
Then I became uncomfortably aware that I was in fact reading a military romance set in Afghanistan during a time of horror for its citizens. No. Just can't understand how anyone could think this was a good setting for this type of book. No amount of snappy dialogue, moody intense chemistry or even a several fictional plane crashes could get me back to this one.
Its a hard no from me.

"Izzy?"
"Nate?" God, I couldn't stop looking at his mouth.
"I'm going to kiss you." The certainty of his words made my skin flush.
"Oh yeah?" I ran my tongue over my lower lip, tasting salt.
"Yeah."
Three years. It had been three years since the ill fated plane trip. The trip that changed everything for Izzy and Nate forever. Seeing each other now, out of the blue? Fate. It's always been fate with them. A lot of things happen over the next 10 years - and they never can seem to stay apart for long.
War zone, politics, family obligation, different careers - all contribute to them not being together.
I love how this story goes back and forth from the past to present. Seeing Nate and Izzy in present time and how they got to where they are weaves an amazing story. I fell in love with Nate right away!
