This is a rollercoaster ride of a book. I loved it. The connection with the characters is almost instantaneous and you feel everything they feel throughout the story. Parts of the story are harrowing and touch in recent events but the author has been so sensitive towards this. If you haven’t read a book by Rebecca Yarros before, I would go and read this book as soon as you can.
IN THE LIKELY EVENT
REBECCA YARROS
"Never apologize for doing what you need to".

This book felt so raw and captivating and real. I loved both characters and felt deeply invested from the first chapter. This story is about two people who embody the whole "right person, wrong time" trope, but it's so unbelievably heart wrenching. I don't want to give too much away, but please, please, PLEASE read this book!!!!! Rebecca Yarros never misses! ♡
In The Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros is a military romance and the story of Izzy and Nate.
These two meet in an airplane that ends up crashing and this is obviously a very traumatic and bonding event, but they lose contact afterwards. That was such an interesting beginning and something I haven’t read before.
And while Nate joins the military afterwards, Izzy gets a degree in politics. These two come from very different lives and they are very opposite. Since their first meeting, I could feel sparks between them, but after the plane event they were still pretty much strangers. Yet Izzy fell head over heels for Nate and always wondered what if. That was a bit strange to me and it never became clear if that was truly love or just a coping mechanism for the trauma.
But they do get a chance years later when they meet in Afghanistan. That is a setting you would least expect a romance and while Nate is there to work and protect the group Izzy is with, Izzy is there on her own mission. There was also this strange dynamic with Nate wanting Izzy gone and fussing over her and that played a bit into the stereotype of women who are weak and need protecting, and they should have nothing to do with the military. This feeling was a bit intensified by Izzy having no idea how dangerous the situation is and still wanting to recklessly follow her own mission. Because of this I just didn’t really feel their romance and it also didn’t help that the military aspects were shown so elaborately that they almost overshadowed the story. After loving all the books I’ve read by this author, it pains me to say that this story just wasn’t for me.
Overall, if you’re looking for a romance that focuses heavily on the military part, this might be for you. 3 stars.

Rebecca Yarros has blown me out of the water yet again. This book had all the details that make me fall for a romance, dual timelines, dual POVs, second chance romance, right person, wrong time.
When Isabeau (Izzy) Astor gets on a plane to go home from college for the holidays, she isn’t expecting more than a normal (for her), nerve inducing plane ride. She certainly isn’t expecting to meet Nathaniel (Nate) Phelan and find that their chemistry is immediately off the charts. However, as they get to know each other, disaster strikes and their plane crashes in the icy Missouri River and everything changes.
Nate goes on to pursue his career in the military and Izzy finds her way into politics. They have a few more chance encounters over the year, but the timing is never right.
After 10 years, then both have given up on their connection, Nate dedicating his life to the military and Izzy agreeing to marry someone else. Until they unexpectedly come together again, this time in Afghanistan, where Nate is on a special forces operation and Izzy has come on an embassy trip for the congresswoman she works for (with a personal agenda under wraps).
When Nate is tasked with keeping Izzy safe, they both realize their connection is as strong as ever and while they both might have jobs to do, they still can’t keep their minds, or hearts away from each other.
There’s a lot of controversy with some people surrounding this book, but it’s not my place so I won’t speak on that besides saying there were a couple lines showcasing part of the MMC’s mentality that was a bit unsavory.
At its heart however this is a contemporary romance, and it’s done incredibly well. The decade long pining doesn’t feel overdone or forced and you find yourself really rooting for their relationship still after everything. There’s also a major twist that was entirely unexpected and left me slightly reeling.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I did deduct a star however, because at times the main characters (mostly the MMC) were incredibly frustrating and their mindset was utterly ridiculous, but I can see how it contributed to the story.
Thank you to NetGalley, Montlake, and Rebecca Yarros for this ARC!
I've never read any military romances before so I didn't know what to expect going into this but I was pleasantly surprised.
In The Likely Event follows Nate and Izzy who first meet as passengers on a flight and become linked when they survive an intense plane crash into the Missouri River. From that day forward, they feel a pull towards each other. But Nate is whisked off to basic training and Izzy can't remember his name. However, fate steps in once again and they soon run into other. But with busy lives, different dreams and a misunderstanding years later, their bond is severed. Three years later, they find each other face to face in Afghanistan and Nate refuses to put her safety in anyone's hands once he is assigned to his protection.
While their timing is always off, I loved to see their relationship grow throughout the years and even hurt at times. The chapters rotate between characters and past/present but don't let that put you off. And I loved the angsty boyfriend vibes that Nate gave off. However, one thing that I did annoy me was that it did repetitive at times and how comfortable Izzy seemed at times being in a war zone.
But that twist at the end? I didn't see that coming.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
In the likely event by Rebecca Yarros is the second book I have read by her. Fourth Wing is the other book. This book is the complete opposite of that and I absolutely adored it. I loved Izzy's character from the beginning with her rambling on the plane. I loved the way that Nate instantly cared for Izzy and took great care for her in her time of need. Plus he loves books so you know of course I would instally swooned over him. The connection between Nate and Isabeau was written so beautifully. No matter how much time apart they had their feelings never changed.
The twist at the end I didn't expect at all and it instantly made me shed a tear. Overall the book was another phenomenal piece of art from Rebecca Yarros and I highly recommend it.
In the Likely Event is a standalone contemporary romance.
This book is told in a past/present timeline with alternating male and female POVs.
This is Nathaniel/Nate and Isabeau/Izzy's story.
The present part of the story takes place in Afghanistan. The book features the military and war. This isn't my favorite setting. However the story was quite riveting.
I'm not a huge fan of past/present timelines. However the author did a good job of making the past interesting.
I decided to try this romance after enjoying the author's super popular The Fourth Wing. The author did manage to weave together an emotional and beautiful story.
Thank you for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have read and loved a few of Rebecca Yarros' romance books a few years ago and having rediscovered her work with the recent hype surrounding the publication of Fourth Wing I knew I wanted to read In the Likely Event. I absolutely loved this book. The book is told in dual timeline as we follow the development of Izzy and Nate relationship over ten years from when they first meet when they were sitting next to each other when their plane crashes to the present day where Izzy is visiting Afghanistan for diplomatic work and Nate is assigned as military to protect her. This book is ultimately a romance but there is also lots of drama and action as we navigate plane crashes and war zones. The chemistry between the two characters is brilliant and I found myself really routing for them to work things out. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.
Nate and Izzy meet under the most incredible circumstances when the plane they are on crashes. They both help each other get to safety and an unbreakable bond is formed between them. Unfortunately for them, life seems to have plans for them that don’t involve them being together. He is shipping out with the army and she is being pressured by her family in to a life she isn’t sure she wants. They stay friends for years but as time goes on they both realise they want more but their timing is never right. I didn’t like how easily Izzy was sway by her parents and how Nate thought he wasn’t good enough. At times I wanted to shake both of them! They are ultimately thrown together in a war zone when Izzy is trying to help her sister and they can no longer deny their feelings for each other. There are still complications galore getting in their way. I loved the intensity between them. I loved the twist which I didn’t see coming even with the little hints given. I’m usually pretty good at spotting things like this.
Loving Fourth Wing, I knew I had to grab In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros! I was not disappointed by Yaros's military romance and found that I needed to constantly be turning the pages to discover what happened between Nate and Izzy. There were some emotional lines spread out and some "oh they did not" vibes that made Yarros's latest a "hit' on my bookshelf.
Dual POV
Dual Timelines
military
Soulmates
Star Crossed Lovers
This story gutted me. Dual time lines immediately stress me out. That’s when you know something big happened. This book was filled with the somethings big!
Immediately you know there’s a connection between Izzy and Nate. The back and fourth banter with they first meet and then this huge thing that’s bonds them for life happens. Over the course of ten years they keep crossing paths, sometimes they’re planned and sometimes not. They each know that they’re supposed to be together but because of Nate’s career they live in a grey area instead; until it all comes to a halt in a warning in Iraq.
This was such a great read. I cried no less than three times all for various things. You just pull for Izzy and Nate to get it together and quit sacrificing and be a bit selfish! It was an amazing story and I highly recommend it!
4.5 stars
My heart broke twice while reading this book.
Nate and Izzy are everything.
<spoiler>Once when he revealed the ring around his neck. And when he said that he was talking to his best friend to releave some stress. Who had been dead for over 4 years😭</spoiler>
Dual POV with past and present chapters.
Now is the story in 2021 Afghanistan, where Izzy is sent as a diplomat who is secretly trying to save her sister.
Past is Nate and Izzy meeting and everything in between.
They are both on the plane, Izzy to go back to collage and Nate heading off the the Army.
This was an incredible story.
Airports. A plane crash. War zones. Highlighted books. Handwritten letters. A connection. Undefinable. Undeniable. A connection crafted by fate. A slow burn relationship made up of attraction, love, and possibilities. A love story reminiscent of movies and books about star-crossed lovers who are locked in each other’s orbits, seeing each other in stolen moments.
Nate is nineteen and on his way to basic training. Izzy is eighteen and on her way home for Thanksgiving. Chance threw them together that first time. And once they were in each other’s lives, it seemed that fate had a twisty, tortuous path for them to find their way back to one another.
This is my first Rebecca Yarros and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Izzy and Nate’s love story started ten years before with a crash landing. They keep getting thrown back together, over and over, every couple of years. Until, at last, they find themselves together, ten years later, in war-torn Afghanistan. They each have their missions. And they now have a chance to work through everything that’s kept apart and figure out if they can finally lock down their future.
Emotional. Frustrating. Steamy. Tension-filled. A couple you want to root for. Well-written, fast-paced. And oh, so romantic.
This book was AMAZING. I’ve been in a slump lately and this book was so much more than I expected it to be. I loved to perspective shifts, it felt like the timelines just flowed so perfectly. Easily in my top 5 romance books I’ve read. I read the entire book in 2 sittings because I just could not put it down. I was truly on the edge of my seat the entire time. GREAT BOOK.
Rebecca Yarros can do no wrong! Ever since I read fourth wing back in April I knew I would have to read every book she releases, and this one was no less phenomenal. Rebecca has such a talent in writing stories and characters that captivate you from the first page!
This is a beautifully written love story that starts with a bang and continues to pull you in page after page. It will tug at your heartstrings, break your heart and have you rejoicing many times over.
It’s a view of obligation (military, family, friendship) and what it can do to to one’s life path if not managed in a healthy way.
It’s a view of world events and their impact on life, family and love.
It’s a view of what happens when you live for yourself and leave the obligation and world events all in the background.
It’s a view of what fate and love can be if you just let it happen.
Izzy and Nate are meant to be. But they let other factors dictate how that will come about and in the end they allow to much time to pass before they can finally just BE. In flashbacks and present time we live the life of these two people from the time they meet on a a plane as teenagers, one going back to college and one going into the military, and through a catastrophic occurrence become tied to each other for the rest of their lives.
Rebecca Yarros has been a go to author for me since her first book. She knows the military, she knows love and she knows how to write a damn good book. You can’t go wrong with anything she writes. Just make sure you block out enough time when you start reading page one, because you can’t stop until the last page is finished.
And J, thank you for your service and dedication to the military and to your wife & family.
A second chance military romance and Dual POV Izzy and Nate. Throughout the years and present day 2021 is the timeline for their story. After a very first traumatic meeting of these two strangers fate decides to keep intervening throughout the years. Then one day there is a misunderstanding that brings a close to their shirt fate made relationship. Years later when they have moved on it seems fate decides to throw them together one last time.
I absolutely love Rebecca Yarros. This book doesn’t disappoint. Like her previous work you start the book and have a hard time putting it down until it is finished.
Well I will be spending the rest of my night sobbing, so thank you for that Rebecca :)
To be completely honest, I wasn't in love with the book at the beginning. it felt very anti-afghanistan and borderline pro-war which is definitely not something I support or want to be associated with. I don't know why you would set a romance in the middle of a war, it didn't really make sense to me and was giving military propaganda; white saviour, as well as using a tragedy as a plot which is just.. strange?
If I allow myself to remove the setting, my review is as follows:
I loved watching their relationship develop over the years (days) that they had together, but the romantic relationship was definitely my least favourite in the book as it did feel potentially insta-love due to the trauma bonding they experienced, my entire time reading was spent focussing on the sibling relationship between Izzy and Serena and Nate's relationships with the other soldiers.
The ending, god, the ending had me hysterically crying to the point where I had to stop reading because all of the words were blurry, purely for Nate, I didn't really care about Izzy's ending.
and yes, it did take me the entire book to realise why that is the book cover, don't judge me.

When Izzy and Nate boarded a plane ten years ago and started speaking to each other, it set off a chain reaction that continues for the next decade. The plane crashes and they survive, but like unlikely magnets, they are drawn to each other and then repelling again and again.

I have a lot of thoughts about this one. Most of the story is set in Afghanistan in the final days before the US departs the country. Much of the language is very big US as the saviour of the people, and the country falling apart. I can appreciate that this is extremely controversial but I don’t feel like it’s my place to comment on this further. The relationship between Izzy and Nate has a lot of wonderful and supportive moments and there is a lot of love between the two, but so much of their relationship is so dysfunctional. They come together, meet up, and then each goes away and tries to have a relationship with other people. The cycle continues over this decade, with so much avoidance. Part of this a function of each of their family backgrounds and a function of the traumatic way they met. Also, this story is probably longer than it needed to be. It’s deep and complicated and emotional. ❤️
