This book is a reworking of the Bridget Jones' diaries and would be a great read for people who haven't read those As someone who has read them, I felt this was a weak copy. However, those new to the genre may well enjoy it.
I didn’t realise this was part of a series when I read it and can confirm the book can certainly be enjoyed as standalone. It’s a very easy read, written almost in the style of a journal, and the protagonist Nell is likable and relatable. I can’t really fault it for its genre: it’s witty, humorous and full of ruminations on life and its challenges. If I’m honest, I found it a bit slow at times and hardly a page-turner: Nell evidently has a strong support network and it’s all very cosy. Perhaps, a nice, feel-good holiday read to dip in and out of.
An easy going and fun read, perfect for a girls holiday by the pool with a drink in hand! Rings true with anyone in their 40s - laugh out loud at times...
I loved the first book so was very keen to find out what happens next with Nel. I thought we had got a different person at first but then all of a sudden there she was.
I enjoyed this book, not as much as the first one but that was always going to be a challenge.
One thing that does grate is why does Fiona think Annabelle is so perfect?
Cricket is wonderful as always and I would like a friend like her to grow old disgracefully and fabulously with.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
✨She’s back!✨
We first met Nell back in Confessions of a 40-Something F*** Up and if you’ve been following me since 2020 and remember all of my reviews (why wouldn’t you?), you’ll know that it was the funniest book I had read that year. In fact, as I write this, I still don’t think I’ve come across anything funnier.
Now, Nell is back. When we left her, things were finally coming together but in this novel she begins to process some past trauma which makes her and her partner realise they don’t want the same things anymore. On top of this, things seem to be going wrong for her friends too. Apparently, no one has the perfect life.
Fans of the first book will be glad to know that Cricket was in top form in this sequel. She was sprinkling those golden nuggets of advice throughout. I highlighted as many as I could so swipe through to read some life lessons from an 80 year-old.
More Confessions is full of more wit, more life lessons and more adventure. And while you don’t need to read the first one to enjoy this one, I highly recommend them both.
Read if you:
· Like laughing
· Enjoy books about friendships
· Love to have a giggle
· Want to see 80 year old women doing what they want and not what is expected
· Read obituaries
· Have a sense of humour
I can't tell you how happy I was to be able to catch up with Nell - I adored "Confessions of a Forty - Something..." some time ago.
However, I am not sure what I think about this book. It for sure gives you with it promises in the title: more confessions. This novel simply follows Nell and her opinions about life. Some are brilliant, some are not, I agree with some, with some I don't agree... But altogether, for me, the plot was not strong and felt mixed up. On the other hand, there are many, many points that resonated with me and there are for sure many, many women out there with same thoughts and feeling.
Nevertheless, there is everything in this book. Laughter, tears, hope, break - ups, second chances, gratitude, family, friends, enemies... But it still felt as if it was written for the sake of being written.
Well this was a fun read on holiday. Had to try hard not to laugh too much as with a family group. I have not read this author before but will look up her books in the future. It makes you realise life is never too short to get it together and do whatever your goals are. Nell is engaged to Edward, they move in together and have to work out how to manage the many new things they come up against. How to load the dishwasher etc. It is something that makes sense in so many households starting life together. Nell has a friend called Cricket who is much older than her and who is a fab character who you cannot help by take to. Never assume an oldie is past their best in life. Life can be tough if you let it and Nell approaches as best she can and the story is filled with highs and lows which makes the reader enjoy her journey. Covid makes it into this story which we can all relate to, long times on her own etc. Edward and Nell are planning to marry and she is broody and time is not on her side. Do things come to a happy ending for Nell. Read the book to find out and it is worth the effort
Loved this follow -on book, packed full of humour, crazy japes and real true to life f--k ups!
You could read it as a standalone book, as the beginning does a great recap of book one, yet there's loads more new content to laugh at and enjoy.
It doesn't matter what she you are, you'll enjoy this life affirming book. I even noted down a couple of ideas to follow up in real life. Decorating certain boxes was a brill idea. Roll on book three
Having recently read the first book in the series for my local book club I was pleased to be offered this book by net galley to read. I found the first book took me a few chapters to get into the style of the story but with this follow up I enjoyed it from the first page.
Nell is settled now with Edward and enjoying being a step mum to his 2 sons. Her friendship with Cricket has grown even more strong . It’s 18 months on from the last book and they’ve lived through Covid and just getting back to a normal life after all the restrictions. Life being life though it throws up lots of problems for Nell and her friends along the way.
Nell has a lot of decisions to make and I’m pleased the book ended the way it did. A good read!
I was so excited to see that there was another part to this series to see where about Nell has ended up so far.
Nell's life isn't going as planned and this book deals with some difficult topics through out but it is dealt with with so much compassion. Even though this deals with serious topics, there is a good humour throughout
I love the characters in this book, especially Cricket, she is just amazing. The characters are all strong and you just end up falling in love with all Nell's friends, I am just so pleased that we have been treated to a another installment.
An Iota Of A Grip…
More confessions in this follow up in a series as we rejoin Nell as she continues to navigate through her life whilst trying to maintain a mere iota of a grip. As expected, life is not exactly getting any easier for Nell and it’s definitely not going to plan. But then, when does it ever? Another perfectly imperfect slice of life, a little potty in places and sometimes moving, sometimes heartwarming but always amusing.
It's been a while since I have related THIS MUCH to a book - as a soon to be 40 something, I felt so seen by this both in the good and the bad. I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I cheered - sheer brilliance!!
This is an amazing sequel to confessions of a Forty something. I absolutely loved catching up with Nell, Cricket, Edward and all of Nell's friends. As a fellow Forty something who's life hasn't followed the expected path I found this very relatable. I have everything crossed that we will hear from Nell and Cricket again. I can't recommend it highly enough.
I was a little worried with this being a sequel that a) I couldn’t remember half the story from the first book and b) that it wouldn’t be as good. I need not have worried about either thing as I quickly became familiar with the lead character, Nell, again and it was a wonderful book.
Set in a post covid world, it touched on lots of things but the main theme was relationships. Whether that be with childhood friends, new friends or boyfriends.
The story was written sensitively and I both laughed and cried at various times throughout.
A thoroughly enjoyable read!
Nell finally thinks she has life sorted - sort of. She has an amazing boyfriend, good friends and a job she enjoys. Unfortunately, just when you think things are going well, life has a way of tripping you up in spectacular fashion.
Fortunately for Nell, her 80 something best friend Cricket, is always there to provide advice, support and cocktails!
This funny take on modern life from the view on a forty something is both funny and moving. It takes you from the highs of wedding planning to the lows of serious illness and everything in-between.
I was eager to read this after enjoying the first book and it didn’t disappoint! Nell is back and adjusting to life after covid. She engaged to her old flat mate Edward and lives with him and his two sons. But her life is thrown for a loop after Edward’s reaction to a positive pregnancy test. It turns out it’s not hers, but it sets her on a path to single life once again.
This has elements of everything to make it a fantastic read. Once again we have the pod cast theme which opens up the Prologue and we also have the subject of Covid, which is relatable to literally everyone in the world. There was plenty of humour and wit keeping those pages turning. I just love Alexandra Potters writing, it’s like a slice of heaven when you want a break from Thrillers.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in return for my honest review.
Post covid awakening for Nell. Life can't be planned. It's Murphy's Law all the way.
This is a humorous and witty tale .A bittersweet story about making the most of what life throws at you. It is awonderful read about acceptance and muddling through. I enjoyed it so much.
You know when sequel movies are made to capitalise on the success of the first movie? I feel that's what this book was.
I LOVED the first book! One of my favourite reads of 2022. To live up to the humour, light-heartedness and relatability to this story was always going to be difficult. Unfortunately, this fell flat and lacked the charm from the first one.
I think including the pandemic put me off. I lived through it and suffered during it so I definitely don't want a reminder of that time. I'm not sure if it's mentioned in the synopsis, but if it was then that's on me.
The story also felt very long. Towards the end, the pacing dragged and I felt a lot of scenes could have been deleted.
I did enjoy the latter half and it was great to revisit the characters again.
All in all, if I hadn't read the first book then this would have been a solid read but it was a tall order for this one to live up to the love I have for the first one.
I am very much the target reader for this book which is advertised accurately as a "modern Bridget Jones." This is Bridget Jones minus the weight checking, cigarette counting etc. This is Bridget Jones with a gratitude journal. Bridget Jones without the unrealistic love interests. This book is a slice of reality with a brilliant sense of humour. It's perfect for anyone who isn't where they thought they'd be. It's uplifting.
If you read this book after a break-up, you will end up feeling much more positive. Sure, the insights into online dating are NOT appealing, but the main character makes new, unlikely, friends and ultimately finds romance in the place she least expected, with a man much better suited to her… This was a fun book overall !
So funny and very relatable. I felt like Nell’s friends were my own. Everyone needs a Cricket in their life! She was absolutely my favourite character.
Lots of wonderful quotes, life lesson one-liners and I loved the happy ending.
Easy to read and very entertaining.
Thank you to NetGalley and Pan MacMillan for advanced copy.
