This is an absolutely beautiful book about the true love that family can show based around a mother calf whale. This book will make it into my class library for sure.
Beautiful, insightful and relatable parent-and-child picture book.
Absolutely stunning illustrations, they could each be pieces of art on a wall.
A story of a mother whale and her commitment to her baby after he is born and through the months as he breathes, feeds and journeys on their long migrations with her. And finally grows to maturity himself.
Almost had a tear in my eye. It was David Attenborough on paper.
Lovely under- and over-water scenes and a simplistic text that conveys the long period over which this all happens.
A lot to learn here and it's really beautiful to look at. Aren't mums great?!
For ages 4 and above.
What a beautiful, gentle story this is. The book has gorgeous illustrations throughout. It is a simple story of a mother whale and her calf and the journey that they take together as the calf learns and grows. It is a tale of a mother’s love for her child and it is an ideal story to be read to young children.
A stunningly illustrated picture book, with the most exquisite artwork excuding tone and atmosphere. The gentle lyrical text takes us on a journey with a whale and her young calf, Together they travel, she protects him, she teaches him until he his bigger, stronger and until eventually it is him that is leading the way. Eventually she realises it's time for him to go.
Filled with tender heart and warmth, Deep is wonderful.
This is a stunningly illustrated and beautifully wise tale – one that every parent should read with their child! Hogtun tells the story of a mother whale and her baby, following the growing, changing, and travelling of their relationship as the cross the seas together before finally the child is ready to set out alone. The book deals wonderfully with the question of how to deal with adversity, and I love the overall message that it’s not the challenges you face, but who you are with that counts. For a child to know they are loved is the greatest gift, and this is the truth that Hogtun celebrates in this book. The art work is gorgeous and really takes your breath away, and the storytelling is simple, gentle, and perfectly pitched. It really is a destined to become a classic!
Overall, a very sweet story. Reading aloud, I stumbled over some of the sentences because of their phrasing. But other than that, this was a really lovely show of a parent's love and guidance
This in an incredibly special book. I challenge you to read it and still have dry eyes at the end. Not only is this book full of impactful life messages but it captures a mother’s love and devotion to her child so beautifully it made me weep.
The illustration are delightful and lull you into the waters and big open skys with the mother and child bringing a sense of awe on every page. I love the colour pallet used and I’m always won over by a Notthern Light illustrator, the atmosphere conjured up is completely immerse and enables you to forget everything but you and your child as you read the story.
A magically special book to share again and again and will help many children either facing separation from loved ones, like starting school, or longer term separation. It resonated in my heart as a Mum who has lost her own Mum. I can’t wait for the hard copy of this book to be released in August! Just in time for any children swimming up to school. Thank you to Netgalley and Bloomsbury for this very special read.
A beautifully illustrated children's book following the journey of a mother and baby whale.
Educational and heart-warming, this book is the perfect bedtime story for little ones.
The Deep is the most beautiful book. The touching story of a mum supporting her son as he grows and finally makes his way in the world. We’ll be hand selling this and I already plan to gift it to friends with sons who are off to uni. Just lovely!
Deep is a truly beautiful and moving book . Stephen Hogtun’s previous book , The Station Cat , was mesmerising in word and illustrations and this shorter but equally charming book will widen his audience and appreciation of his work. This is a simple story of a young whale embarking on his first “swim” journey with his mother learning what life is like under the sea and reaching the deeper waters where he can feed and live and grow stronger; ultimately making his own way in the world .
.The language / vocabulary is pitch perfect - sensitive , magical and with the right amount of emotion ( not sentimental) . The illustrations are stunning and the colours capture the feelings and highlight the beauty of the underwater world. This is a perfect book for younger readers and listeners to immerse themselves in and open up conversations about growing up and journeys - as well as highlighting the splendour of these magnificent creatures .. This is going to be a winner with KS1 classes and for families. No pun intended but “deeply moving “
