Imagine waking up with super powers: the ability to teleport, to move things with your mind, to be able to fly! For Year 7 pupil Sonny, his dreams have literally come true. But when misfortune strikes his family, Sonny is left wondering who he can trust.
A book filled with warmth and humour, I enjoyed reading Sonny’s story and was able to read it as a stand alone text, without even realising it was a sequel.
What a wonderful story for children. The magic in and of this book is wonderful. With ups and downs it is very gripping and with challenges kids go through it is relatable. Will be recommending this book
I loved The Wondrous Prune by Ellie Clements so I was really excited when The Stupendous Sonny arrived on NetGalleyUK. Ellie has a fantastic talent for combining absolutely brilliant superpowers with heartfelt real life issues.
Sonny is just an ordinary kid – facing the challenges (and bullies) of high school, dealing with a younger brother and sister, hanging out with his best friend Elliot, and keeping everything going while mum works away from home. That is until one day, he discovers the most astrobulous thing. He has superpowers! Sonny can make things levitate, he can fly and he can teleport from one place to another. Life is never going to be the same again!
At first all of these uncontrolable powers seem like they’re just going to get Sonny in a whole lot of trouble. He doesn’t know how to explain it to anyone and it’s a huge mystery! Then Dad has a terrible accident. Without him to look after the family, no amount of powers will make a difference.
Sonny’s priorities change in the second half of the story. Now, the only thing that matters is Dad getting better and Mum coming home. When Aunt Cleo arrives to look after them, Sonny is skeptical. Mum and Cleo had a big falling out a few years ago and he doesn’t really know her. Is she someone he can trust with his secret?
Sonny realises there are lots of ways to be a superhero and that having these powers might not be so bad afterall. He can make a difference to his family and bring them all closer together.
Thank you to Bloomsbury Publishing for this fantasticly imaginative book!
A fantastic story with a wonderful message. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for a review.
The Stupendous Sonny is Ellie Clements' follow up to The Wondrous Prune, and it is a worthy follow up indeed! Delmere magic is still going strong...
Sonny wakes up one morning to discover that he has extraordinary abilities. For a start, he has the capacity move objects with the power of his mind. But in addition to telekinesis, he finds that he can also teleport to different locations!
Unfortunately, before Sonny is able to fully enjoy his new powers, his father is involved in an accident and ends up in a coma. Because of this, Sonny and his two siblings have to go and live with their mysterious Aunt Cleo. And amidst his worries about his father, Sonny has a funny feeling that Aunt Cleo may have her own agenda when it comes to his newfound powers.
Nevertheless, he is happy for the additional options that he now has when it comes to dealing with school bullies. Not to mention that his powers are pretty cool for impressing both allies and enemies.
This is a really entertaining book, and fast-paced too. Highly recommended for the target age group, as well as those who like letting their inner child out every now and then!
Following on from the Wondrous Prune ( which was a great hit with year 5/6 classes) Ellie Clements has created Stupendous Sonny. This is a brilliant fun adventure story- Sonny wakes one morning to find that he can move objects with his mind but also has the ability to teleport himself to different locations.
After his dad is hurt in a car accident, Sonny and his two siblings are put under the care of aunt Cleo- but does she have ulterior motives in Sonny when she discovers his hidden talents. Alongside the mysterious aunt, Sonny uses his skills to deal with school bullies and entertain friends.
The Stupendous Sonny is wonderful read and is certainly a great book for the summer holidays and beyond. Fast paced, sensitive as Sonny deals with the accident and his absent mum but also very funny ( including floating sofas, a tornado and earthquake and a global explosion of Power Piglet toys!) What will be the next instalment of Delmere Magic be ? Highly recommended for 9-11 year olds
