Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
The information provided about this book indicates that it is a saga about growing up in New York in the early 1900s. There is extreme poverty, poor conditions and a lack of support for young children growing up in the streets as they fend for themselves.
The plot is good and descriptions of the physical conditions and characters' emotions are realistic. I found it difficult to read because the language is stilted and there are many odd word choices, as though the book has been translated using a dictionary or thesaurus instead of someone who is fluent in English. I persevered until I was 25% through but once there was Mafia involvement - a subject I do not like to read about and which was not in the description - I stopped reading.
I was interested in reading this book because my grandpa grew up in the days of old New York poverty. I was not disappointed. This is a solid historical fiction novel, and I recommend it to those who are interested in NYC.
A gripping and powerful novel that vividly portrays the harsh realities of poverty in early 20th century New York City. The author's writing style is raw and emotive, drawing readers into the story and making them feel like they are experiencing the struggles alongside the characters. The main character is a compelling figure, and his struggles to guide his family through a difficult time are both heart-wrenching and inspiring. This is a must-read for anyone looking for a thought-provoking and powerful story.
