Heavy on the platitudes, this look at all of the differences across the human race ends up telling us we are all similar enough after all. It's bound for countless school library shelves – but it's very doubtful it will be taken from them for entertainment purposes.
I love any book that helps educate my daughter! She’s recently been questioning about other people and what she can/can’t say about them and how people are different from each other, and reading books like this helps start the conversation in an easy and fun way!
This is a really nice book to read with children to talk about diversity. It is illustrated with colourful cartoon characters that children can identify with and is peppered with key facts.
It has a really useful guide for parents and educators at the back, with suggestions on how to address the topics. There is also a glossary with simple explanations of the terms used, which helps to explain them to children. This also allows confident readers to revisit the book and look up terms.
I think the book is aimed at primary school age children. However it may need to be read to younger key stage 1 children as there is a substantial amount of text for a picture book. There is also brief mention of differences in gender and sexuality which is useful to note in advance if children have not yet covered these topics!
A great introduction to diversity. My 7 year old enjoyed reading this with me at bedtime and had fun answering the questions.
