A lovely feel good story.

Iris’s mother has died and she has just left an abusive relationship when she ends up in New York revisiting her mother’s old haunts.

She becomes embroiled with the Italian owners of a gelato featured in her mother’s scrapbook of her time travelling with a band. Iris also has in her possession the recipe for their famous vanilla flavoured gelato which is temporarily lost.

She falls for Gio and the wider family but has secrets she is afraid to part with for fear of breaking up the family.

I liked the other supplementary characters particularly Bobby and his cat!

I adore Josie Silver’s stories. I cannot help but fall in love with her principal male characters whilst admiring their leading ladies.

I love that Iris and Gio’s story is set in New York. It is a city that is top of my bucket list of places to visit and Ms. Silver’s descriptive language not only allowed me to visualise the scenes within this narrative perfectly, but I’m now also even more desperate to visit the Big Apple for myself.

I cannot deny that Gio Belotti has stolen my heart. This incredible man has had more than his fair share of heartache, and he is a kind, caring, honest and loyal gentleman - one that without a second thought you would want within your close circle. Iris also comes into this story with a hurting heart. Her baggage adds something extra to the storyline and there are lessons to be learned from her actions.

At first, I wasn’t certain having Vivien share her story in the way that she does was the correct thing for the author to do. Then, as the story progressed, I realised how much more this added to my reading experience - insights that I ended up loving knowing whilst appreciating how her history impacted on Iris’ today. All supporting characters in this story make it what it is. I adore how close the Belotti family are, plus the friendships which substantiate that you don’t need to share the same blood in order to be family. There are many scenes throughout the narrative that I found to be very emotional and I loved this!

I’m torn with regards to the star rating to award A Winter in New York. It did take me a few chapters to connect with the story but then I became captivated. I adored witnessing Gio and Iris together. I absolutely loved being with the Belotti family too. I do have unanswered questions, although I always found myself immersed back into the story, concentrating on what was happening in the present so distracting me away from what was in my thoughts. In the end, I have decided on 4-4.5 stars. This is a story that I highly recommend to you to read.

Well Josie Silver has done it again; A Winter In New York has all the trademark endearing characters, precarious secrets and sizzling chemistry you want from her books, throw in gelato and a judgey cat called Smirnoff and you've got this beauty!

I loved all the classic New York film & other popular culture references, and many of the lesser known Italian -American & New Yorker traditions & experiences, such as the food festival.

Iris and Gio's complicated pasts brought such tender and terrifying risks to their relationship, and as each chapter went on I felt deeply their vulnerable love & conflict which made delicious reading!

Gio's family is just absolutely amazing and Iris' besties in Bobby & Robin were the cherry on the cake for me. I do hope we get to visit them all again at some point.

Loved this. Iris flees an emotionally abusive relationship in England and follows her late mother's footsteps to New York. The story of Iris and Gio is wrapped around a traditional ice cream shop, a recipe from her mother on a serviette and a scrapbook from her mother's time in New York. Likeable secondary characters, face, easy read. A pick me up in book form.
Thanks to Penguin and Netgalley for this ARC.

I was not at all expecting to be awake at 4am, because I just could not stop reading, crying my eyes out to this book.
A beautiful story of finding yourself, and love, this book made me feel every emotion.
Iris came to New York after fleeing an abusive relationship to follow in the footsteps of her late mother. Here, she finds herself a sanctuary with her landlord Bobby and his husband in their flats above a noodle house.
Whilst at market event, Iris stumbles upon a gelateria which feels strangely familiar, and finds herself amidst the Belotti family's crisis - the patriarch of the family has had a stroke and noone else knows the family's famous gelato recipe. Noone, that is, except by chance Iris.
Iris is faced with a huge catch 22 situation - how can she give them their recipe without opening a huge can of worms and ruining the slow building relationship she has forming with the nephew and heir to the gelataria, Gio?
When I started reading this book, I did not expect it to sweep me off my feet in the way that it did. I fell deeply in love with the characters, laughing and crying where fit and my only complaint is that it had to come to an end (and oh what a wonderful ending!)
I will definitely be picking up a physical copy of this come October, and giving it a re-read as the weather gets colder (this summer heatwave is slightly different to the New York snow!).
Thank you to Penguin and Netgalley for allowing me to read this advanced copy, and to Josie for writing such a beautiful book.

This novel has everything you want in a Winter Read – or to help you cool down in a Summer heatwave! It had romance, community, suspense, love, laughter, reality and gelato. The romantic scenes were just right and helped to create a cosy and warm page-turner of a book. A true book-lover will be hooked by those very first few pages – read and you’ll see why!

Josie Silver’s storylines always feel realistic, down-to-earth and completely possible. Her characters are true to life and unpredictable. The romance was natural and the descriptions absolutely perfect. There was a whole host of loveable characters and a real sense of family. There will not be a more authentic christmas read this year!

Aahhh five beautiful festive star (in the middle of summer!)

Josie Silver has character building and scene setting absolutely nailed in this beautiful winters tale! Iris and Gio are two of the most likeable characters I have come across this year, and I think they will stay with me for some time!

Set in New York (my favourite city in the world!) Iris is on a personal mission to create a new life for herself. Her reasons are personal and will likely resonate with a lot of female readers, which is probably why I liked her so much.

This heartwarming novel brings together love, loss, family, & feelings and has left me feeling utterly MUSHY. A perfect festive read. 5/5 stars!

JOSIE SILVER – A WINTER IN NEW YORK ****

With Josie Silver you know that you are in safe hands.

This is the story of Iris, a young Englishwoman who flees an abusive relationship by flying to New York just before Christmas. There she meets Gio, part of an Italian American family famous for one flavour of ice cream. Vanilla. Unfortunately, they have lost the recipe, and only two people know it, one who has lost his memory, the other who is abroad.

By pure coincidence Iris has their recipe, scribbled on a napkin years ago by the man who has lost his memory when he was in love with her mother, who sang in a band. If Iris told Gio she had the recipe they need the story would end the moment they met. But for a variety of reasons invented to keep the story alive, she decides not to.

This is a heart-warming tale, the agony of a love affair with secrets, colourful family and friends, culminating with Christmas in New York and a brilliantly executed set piece at the end that has you cheering. Very satisfying. As I said, you are in safe hands with Josie Silver.

After the death of her mother and managing to get away from her abusive ex, Iris moves to New York on a whim because it's where her mother felt most at home. As she tries to experience the city through her mother's eyes, it takes her to a gelato shop where her mother found her one and only love.

Ever since I read One Day in December, I've been hoping for another Josie Silver book to knock me off my feet and... this was the one.

I love love love love love Gio Belotti. I love the whole Belotti clan and how they made Iris feel part of the family from the get go. And I love Josie Silver because, THANK YOU, she did not resort to the one big trope I hate - the miscommunication/third act breakup.

HOWEVER, the whole premise of the book is a direct result of Iris keeping the biggest secrets and I found it annoying because, in real life, Iris would've come out with the truth straightaway.

I'll still, for sure, be getting this in print when the book is released in October.

When Iris leaves a bad relationship she arrives in New York with nothing but some clothes and her beloved mother's gelato maker but a chance meeting in a book store with a man named Gio will eventually be a link to to her mother's past. Its a wonderful story and Gio and his family are fantastic characters and welcome Iris into the family but if her mother's secret was to come to light it could tare the family apart. A story of friendships and relationships that make you very emotional at times and it it beautifully written. I loved it

This is the first time I've read a book by Josie Silver and wow!

Josie Silver did an amazing job at finding the perfect balance between a beautiful story while tackling hard and emotional stuff.

I definitely can't wait to read another book from this author.

I was a bit disappointed in Josie Silver’s last novel, One night on the Island, as I had really enjoyed her two previous offerings. I was concerned that I would feel the same about this one. However, A Winter in New York is a great read and I feel that she is back to her best.
The story follows Iris, a 30 something woman who has lost her mother who was her only family. and She has also managed to escape an emotionally abusive relationship in London. She has found employment and some friends in New York but is still scarred from her relationship. She ventures out with a friend and notices a door that features in a photo she has seen in her mother’s scrapbook, a book that chronicles her mother’s time in New York in the early 1980’s before Iris’ birth. The story unfolds from here. It is lavish and heart warming, beautifully written and shows a gorgeous side of New York. Extremely enjoyable. Thanks to Penguin General UK - Fig Tree, Hamish Hamilton, Viking, Penguin Life, Penguin Business and Netgalley for an ARC of this novel.

A Winter in New York is a heartwarming story. When Iris moves from UK to New York escaping a controlling, gas lighting ex she is assailed by memories of her much loved deceased mother, these plus an old scrap book of her mothers lead her on a journey of discovery of her mothers past.
Meeting Gio the son of a Gelateria owner link’s to her mother becomes even stronger. This is a romantic story of grief, second chances and close family ties, with heartwarming and some heartbreaking moments. Full of great dialogue with a lovely male/ female lead and a cast of great characters.
Iris had a secret she was afraid of revealing to Gio which I actually didn’t think it was that big a deal and it did at times seem to be more at the centre of this story than it needed to be. That said I found the story well constructed and thoroughly entertaining.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.

A Winter In New York is about love, loss and loyalty. Filled with 80s nostalgia, splattered with musical references from The Goo Goo Dolls to The Pretenders to Elton John and Joni Mitchell- you can almost hear the soundtrack whilst reading. The characters are both full of life and true to life. Some are more like caricatures, but they lend a sense of comedy and atmosphere to the writing. I loved the main characters who had fantastic chemistry and at times their romance felt like a fairy tale. It was a joy to read, I couldnt put it down. Pure escapism!
5 stars!

*trigger warning for themes and descriptions of domestic/emotional abuse*

Thank you to NetGalley for inviting me to read an ARC off this highly enjoyable book!

This is a gentle story that meanders through the pages in a way that keeps you reading without realising you are doing so.
Relocated to New York to escape an abusive ex and find a new life, Iris stumbles upon delicious ice-cream, beautiful humans and a tangled web from her mums past that all culminate in a will they/should they scenario wrapped in snowflakes and gelato.
Great characters, vibrant setting with lots of cultural details of the American-Italian community I really fancied a stroll through the festival and a gelato of my own (although I just cannot get on board with only vanilla!)

You do need to suspend disbelief at the epic coincidences they book leads you through but that is part of the charm of a well written romance!

Yet again another fabulous read from this author whose writing takes you on an uplifting romantic journey whilst at the same time getting to the heart of life’s issues.

This story is a heartwarming yet Herat wrenching read of love loss grief and heartbreak and of finding yourself again. This book made me laugh and cry in equal measure and one that I won’t forget about in a hurry.

Thanks to Penguin and Netgalley for a review copy of this book. An absorbing, seamless read that is Josie Silver’s best to date. Set in New York City, the novel centres around Iris, who is fresh from a painful breakup with her fiancée and decides to leave England and go to New York City in order to hopefully connect with the place her recently deceased mother loved so much in her early twenties when she was a hopeful emerging rock singer. During an aimless wander through a street festival Iris comes upon a gelateria that reminds her of a storefront in her mother’s New York scrapbook. On a whim she goes inside, hoping for a dish of gelatio and meets Gio, whose family have owned the gelateria for generations, only to find that the holder of their special secret recipe lies in the hospital and no memory of it. It’s a crisis that looms large over the family’s fortunes and to Iris’s appalling realisation, she’s the only one who can help. The steps Iris takes leads into an increasingly tangled web that can only ultimately mean disaster.
The novel has a wonderful sense of the community of an Italian New York family with all the senses engaged, as you would hope for. A wonderful read leading up to Christmas or any time of the year.
