Wonderfully informational book! Would highly, highly recommend. Dandelions are probably the most misunderstood and useful "weed' in existence.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

This was interesting, and I learnt a lot. I liked that the origin of dandelions in different cultures.
The layout is a little wierd, with information being repeated. I also don't know why this is being published in October, so far outside of the dandelion season.

Finally a book dedicated to the beautiful dandelion. So many people think this plant is just a "weed" but it is so much more. This book covers it all, history, folklore, herbalism ... and even includes the recipes to help you enjoy! I definitely recommend to anyone interested in foraging and herbalism.

Dandelions grow all over my area and Ive never used the weed killers on my yards. I loved them and felt they were special but I didnt know why. After reading this well written and practical book I am in awe of the benefits of this little yellow flowered marvel. Its all here and I am using what Ive read to bring some better health to myself right now with dandelion tea! There are also other plants involved and usable with this delightful treasure. Not just dandelions but other available herbs and berries are discussed and recipes given. Awesome resource!

I read this because I wanted to learn some fun facts about dandelions, and I was particularly excited for the chapter on scientific publications, but only one is from the past 40 years. I'm not herbalist woo-woo enough for this book. Also she says that Vikings introduced dandelions to the Americas and that's just...not right.

Dandelion Medicine (Book Review)
Dandelion Medicine: Forage, Feast and Nourish Yourself with This Extraordinary Weed is a book dedicated to – you guessed it – dandelions.
Written by Brigitte Mars, who I think did the fantastic illustrations as well, it’s a homage to the humble dandelion and now in it’s second edition.
As someone who routinely digs dandelions out of our lawn, it was interesting to read more about the history and uses of this plant. I’ve always known it has many uses, but seriously – there are so many more uses for dandelions than I expected.
The book does cover medicinal uses like teas (although I found the instructions on making them a little hard to follow). There is more to the content than simply medicine though.
There is a selection of recipes for drinks and food as well as plenty of historical information and facts. There’s also a section on growing your own dandelions, if you ever felt the need to get more in your garden or to cultivate a crop especially for using in your preparations. I learned that there are certain times of the year best for harvesting.
The artwork in the book is really good, and the whole book has a beautiful feel to it. The layout and design makes it a brilliant coffee table read.
This is a great book for people interested in foraging. I think some of the recipes would take a long time to prepare, but you could get kids at a forest school session aware of the uses of the plant and get them to help with picking the leaves.
I’m quite interested in making dandelion lemonade – I think that would be a fun drink to share at a forest school session, especially if we had parents there for an event like our annual father’s day get together!
I received an ARC from Netgalley to review the 2nd edition.

A very interesting book. I learnt a lot about the dandelion - the history of it and the myriad uses. No part of the dandelion is unsuitable for human use. Very informative. There are lots of interesting recipes too.

Really enjoyed it - and will be trying out some of the recipes.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher I read a free advance review copy of the book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.

I have many books on uses of herbs and other plants found in nature as health remedies and this one on dandelions is a perfect addition.

It had a lot of information such as how to grow them, best time to pick depending on the type of taste you are looking for, the different parts and their uses, myths, folktale, and how it was viewed and used historically.

It gives medicinal uses, recipes for tinctures, teas, foods that use different parts of the dandelion. It is great for the gardener, herbalist, and those just looking to incorporate healthy green into their diets that are affordable and grow in so many places. Once you read this book, you’ll never look at dandelions as a weed again.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for allowing me to read an ARC to give my honest review.

I absolutely love this book! As one other reader said, when do you ever see a whole entire book dedicated to dandelion!? Never!

I've been taking the dandelion supplement during my current pregnancy and I really feel like it's helped be not deal with any swelling this time around. I mean there are so many health benefits for dandelion and this book is a wealth of knowledge.

Highly recommend it!

I expected to love this book. I am a big fan of dandelions for food and medicine. I have a dandelion root tincture on my herbal stand right now. Dandelion honey is a favorite family recipe here and my kids ask me to make dandelion flower fritters every spring. I even tend to eat a dandelion leaf while gardening as a little multivitamin and to help digestion. I’m well acquainted with how healthy and versatile they are.

This is a long book that is packed with rambling information and lore, but without clear directions, referenced studies, photos, or the kind of information that makes me trust the author. I had to read elsewhere to find out the author has been an herbalist for over 50 years (trained or just in the sense that she has used herbs herself for 50 years?) because there’s no talk about her background, training, experience or how she personally has used them. A lot of the book reminded me of the old health cure books where they list a thousand random recipes and home remedies that seem to have been compiled by putting every one they could find or make up in a 300 page book.

The directions for teas (the main herbal recipe section, though they are not really teas) will be confusing to most, since they call for both a decoction of some plants and infusion of others, without telling the reader what that even means or how to do it. There’s a sort of endless list of facts and recipes and information, without the simple and practical translation of how dandelions actually help.

The food recipes also sometimes sound as if they will taste frankly awful. Dandelions can be really wonderful in sweet and savory dishes, but these just didn’t sound like they had ingredients that would go well together. There’s a pudding of some sort that involves blending dandelion leaves, avocado, raw apples and other ingredients, for instance. And if you’re going to start cooking with dandelions, I’m not sure “dandelion loaf” is the way to start.

I really hate to be so negative, but this strikes me as one of those books that looks fantastic to someone who doesn’t know anything about the subject but then doesn’t give you what you need to actually succeed with it. I think people who just want to read interesting things about dandelions will love it, but if you want to actually use dandelions for health you’ll be much better served elsewhere. The stock illustrations are lovely though, and the author seems like a lovely person. Even I hate myself for being so critical.

Two stars for it was okay, for me personally. Others are likely to really enjoy it.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.

This was such a good book and I learned so much about one of my favorite plants. I have so many memories of dandelions as a kid and it’s so awesome to see just how much one can do with them now. I cannot wait to get my hands on some and to use dandelion in my recipes soon.

An absolutely amazing book, which would be a welcome addition to any gardeners, foragers or library bookshelf! From the history and folklore of the humble, yet amazing dandelion, to its uses and harvesting. I agree with the quote at the beginning, and will no longer refer to dandelions as weeds. This book is a game changer, and you really learn to appreciate the plant you take for granted.

Fantastic book. There was so much knowledge packed within the pages that I was highlighting like crazy.

Given the subject matter, I was expecting the book to be a bit dry, but it turned out to be a fascinating read. There was history; myths/folktales; medicinal uses; instructions for teas, tinctures, decoctions; along with a ton of recipes.

Great resource for anyone interested in foraging, herbalism, or plant lore.
