Lovely book for young readers which would make an excellent addition to any classroom or home bookshelf.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance copy of this book in exchange for my review.
One interesting book about humpback whale: how they live, how they communicate, how they have babies, how they fed, and many more interesting facts. The author especially written on how lack of food for these whales because of climate changing, and urge the readers to do something. We might behave like how we use to, without much thinking about how it affects the climate. Now we should be more aware of our actions that may lead to lowering the amount of krill, whales' food.
Little Whale is a lovely and informative picture book. Anna Brett’s educational story is approachable and I love Carmen Saldaña’s cute illustrations!
This easy-to-read story follows a day in the life of adorable humpback whale calf Little Whale. He lives in a pod with his mom, dad, and other family members. The humpback whales live in both warm and cold waters. But, this time, they are setting out to find food in The Antarctic Ocean. Along the way, we learn many interesting facts about these majestic gentle giants. There is information on their annual migration, whale songs and how they communicate with each other, as well as their familial relationships in their pods. Did you know that humpback whales only sleep for 30 minutes at a time? Did you know that these gigantic whales consume a diet of small fish and krill (little shrimp)?
First, we have a wonderful story followed by a great fact and photos section that also includes case studies as well as fun crafting and quiz activities! I also love the pictures of real humpback whales as well as the story of Migaloo the albino whale. This is a great way to show kids that the whales that they’ve been reading about actually exist! The fictional story is fairly short but engaging and effectively conveys a lot of information without being too overwhelming. Brett’s writing is simple and approachable. But, there are some difficult words that younger readers may need help with.
I learned so many new things about these amazing gentle giants! Furthermore, I never felt like I was being bombarded with facts or being preached to. I also like that Little Whale is our story guide because it makes learning relatable and fun for young readers. I definitely think this book will encourage kids to learn more about conservation, whales, and the wonders of marine life!
Saldaña’s full-page and full-colour illustrations are so charming! I love the beautiful and gentle colours. The underwater scenes are beautifully rendered and I love the representations of sea life. The humpback whales are adorable. I especially love sweet Little Whale with his lovely cheerful smile! I particularly love the beautifully drawn last page of the story where Little Whale sends us off into the sunset with a smile and a stunning rainbow spray. It is a joyous and memorable sight and will definitely keep Little Whale imprinted in my memory!
🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳 out of 5 little whales!
This book was so cute. My children would love this! Great job with cute illustrations.
I feel like this was fun while also being informative in a child friendly manner. I would be happy to have this in my childrens library or purchase as a gift.
Lots of information and fun activities you could do. I would have loved to have this before taking my children to the ocean.
5 stars
Things I love about this book: the illustrations are beautiful; it is full of interesting facts all about whales; the sections of fact pages and activities at the back will be so interesting for children. I loved the use of real life pictures in the back section too because I think it will show children that the animals they have been reading about do actually exist!
I did try to read this to my little boy and it was a bit too wordy to him, he wasn't able to get through the whole book keeping his attention. For this reason, I think this is definitely aimed at school aged children, not pre-schoolers. I think this would be perfect for a 5-7 year old who are just starting to read independently as they would be able to read this to their parents/ teachers.
The 'g' in the font for the bulk of the book would be very difficult for any of the children I teach to read as it looks different to how we write the letter.
I liked the originality of the perspective this book was written in. Information is interspersed into the story. There are beautiful illustrations within the story and then real photos at the end. I thought the book and information were organized very well.
Fun illustrations in a very informative book. Too complex for the two year old but the four and five year olds enjoyed it and had many questions.
Little Whale is a fun, interactive way for young children to learn about whales. The illustrations are beautiful and the text engaging. My son really enjoyed the different activities at the end of the book.
Little Whale is a fun, interactive book for you and your child. Follow a humpback whale family as they travel throughout their day and explain everything that they do in their lives. This is a great educational book to help teach your little one about whales. I even learned a few new things about whales. The illustrations are fun and colorful. Thank you Netgalley, Anna Brett, and Quarto Publishing Group for the copy of Little Whale. A very fun interactive read in which the reader follows a young whale travel alongside his pod, his family. The drawings are beautiful and the information is easy to comprehend. Humpback whales are magnificent creatures and they deserve our respect and protection.
A book for all to enjoy! I learnt a lot of interesting facts about Humpback whales that I didn't know, and can see this being a great addition to kids bookshelves. It's a wonderful educational book full of facts, but written like a story from the whales perspective. The writing teamed with the super cute illustrations will keep kids engaged while they read and learn.
A gorgeous little book, which combines the story of a humpback whale family with facts about whales, great for children curious about nature. There are follow up activities to do. I believe there are other books too. Would be a lovely addition to home libraries.
This was such a lovely and beautifully illustrated book. Children (as well as adults) can learn facts about humpback whales by following a humpback calf for the day. I warmly recommend this book to children and their parents.
Follow little whale to learn facts about a whale's life. This sweet story has lovely, adorable illustrations and a variety of facts about whales. The book includes extensive backmatter including useful activities for families or students.
This is a beautifully illustrated and factual book on humpback whales, perfect for little explorers. It presents scientific information in an accessible and interesting way. Slightly older children can read it on their own, but it’s also suitable for reading with younger ones.
Highly recommended. Thank you to NetGalley and to words & pictures for this ARC.
Very cute and informative. Lovely illustrations, and I learned a lot. Good back matter, with activities, matching, and a quiz.
Children who love sea critters are sure to enjoy this beautifully illustrated title. In these pages, they will get to know Little Whale (a humpback) and members of his pod. They will learn a lot about many aspects of a whale’s life and environment.
For example, find out why these whales have “knobby” heads. Learn how long a whale can stay under water and so much more.
This book is recommended for children who love the sea and those who live in it. Adults may just enjoy it as well.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group. All opinions are my own.
I really like this book. It's very informative but I do wonder if it's maybe a bit too-information packed for most children. The recommended ages are 4-7 but I think it would be more appropriate for 5+ just based on how much facts and information is included, the actual information and the length of the book. However, I still love this book and most definitely recommend it! If you or your children love the ocean and ocean life, this is for you!
Little Whale tells the story of a young whale calf, a brother, mother and a father. All along the way, whale facts are given. It's a really engaging way to convey the information to children. After the story, there's a quiz, a section of whale crafts and some whale games and a feature on an albino whale named Migaloo. I thoroughly enjoyed this title and learned quite a bit along the way. I love how multifaceted this book is with all it's features.
