A brilliant psychological thriller filled with unexpected twists and turns!
It took me a little while to get into this book but when I did, I was absolutely hooked.
The story followed two different timelines, which I love in a psychological thriller because you get to discover so many things but the context is constantly changing. I absolutely loved the fact that I had no idea who I could trust.
The narrator also did an amazing job! I can't wait to read more from this author.
This is a clever psychological thriller, I'd be tempted to edge it towards literary fiction if the need to provide a classification were forced upon me!
It is a highly original book and superbly clever! A woman is carjacked, however this woman is far from straightforward, as we soon learn. A body is found in the boot of her car - she knows the victim but says he (the carjacker) is responsible. He denies any knowledge of there even being a body - who to believe?! She is a respectable mother, he is young, dishevelled and has a criminal past.
Past and present timelines are used to great effect and as such a number of stories come into play. I dont want to say more incase of giving a spoiler but I will say the twists and use of 'smoke and mirrors' are VERY effective!!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
I am really enjoying my audiobooks recently but it has made me realise that the narrator can absolutely make or break a book on audio!! This was a pretty decent thriller, with some fantastic twists and turns. There were a couple of genuine "OMG" moments which I really enjoyed. I guessed at some of the twists but that didn't massively distract from my enjoyment. However, I did not think the narrator was the right pick for this book. She failed to inject tension at the right moments, for me, and she also seemed to really struggle with accents! She was required to do both a Leeds accent and a Scottish accent and I didn't feel confident when she did either, which really distracted me from the content of the story. Overall an ok listen but didn't blow me away...
I am grateful for my free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Just a short note on the narration, I hate it when voice actors attempt a character’s accent and fail . I can use my imagination if they don’t attempt it, but a poorly attempted accent is just off putting.
The book itself is great. The four main characters are well written and rich. The story is a rollercoaster with a depressingly terrifying ending
Oh dear what a twisted story that was! If you are searching for something that starts over right from the beginning until the ende: here you go!
My word against his is fast paced and full of twists and turns all over! And not to forget about the action!
It starts over with a woman being kidnapped at knife point. This alone would have been a decent story itself but as mentionded before from here things are being reveeled! We see the back story unfold ending up in a way I would not have guessed!
Eloise Mignon does a great job narrating this story!
Thank you #NetGalley #Bolinda Audio for this advanced audio edition
Gripped mystery with unexpected twist. Engaging plot & well described characters.
The audiobook’s narration was great.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.
Fast paced, twisty and suspenseful domestic thriller with great narration.
Careers advisor Celia shouldn't really have invited one of the pupils back to her house but the girl was clearly hungry and neglected, and she forgot how strange their home might appear to outsiders. She was so careful to keep everything just right but one day her husband comes home early, triggering a devastating series of events.
Told from three perspectives across dual timelines and by unreliable narrators.
Sinister, unnerving and kept me guessing to the end.
Started off really well with a bit of mystery about what happened to the husband who disappeared but the storyline seemed to tail off and loose its mystery as I guessed what had happened about half way through
This has to be the twistiest book I have read all year! Every chapter is another layer of "wtf!?" I caught myself swearing out loud. I had to leave the library because I kept getting surprised.
Literally WTF?!
Thanks for this.
Love the narration.
This one was good.
Fast paced and plenty of twists, and tension.... little hints as to what really happened.
It had the lot.
Celia is a great narrator to this story, where you never really know what's true.
The other characters tell their side of the story well too.
I raced through it, feeling like there was always going to be another truth uncovered, and another.
The audio book really brings home the pacing, and I'm glad I listened to this book rather than read it.
My own voice might not have done it justice!
A fast paced domestic thriller with great narration! Told from 3 characters perspective and dual timeline the plot at first feels disjointed but slowly comes together. Told with half lies and half truths and unreliable narrators, there is so much mystery to uncover and an ending that definitely packs a punch!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
I really enjoyed this book! I look forward to reading other books by this author. There were so many twists in this book I didn’t see coming. But then again I rarely can figure books out. I would definitely recommend this book!
I listened to the Audiobook of this title.
What really happened? He says/She says
Who would you trust to be telling the truth?
Celia, separated mum of 1, who works for citizens advice or Sam, young, recently released from prison and carrying a knife?
This story takes us through the events of that night from both Sam and Celia’s viewpoint and also flits between Celia’s past
I found this an interesting narrative and although the who dunnit wasn’t really a huge shock, there were twists along the way that meant you were always questioning the whys and what for?
Very well written and retold by the fantastic narrators. Would highly recommend
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to listen to this audiobook
An enjoyable, fairly fast paced read with a couple of twists that I did manage to guess. I didn’t really like any of the characters, but I don’t think that made a difference to my enjoyment of the story. I don’t want to say anything about the plot as I don’t want to give anything away. Definitely worth a read if you like this genre. I’ll be looking out for more by Lauren North as this was my first of her work. Great narration. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to listen to this book.
What a fabulous book! It starts off with a car jacking, but is that really all there is to the story? Absolutely not. Keep reading! I will definitely be looking for more from this author. The fact that I had it on audiobook only added to the suspense, I would recommend listening instead of reading – and I never thought I would say that!
This was a gripping and interesting psychological thriller. I was pretty much hooked, None of our protagonist are entirely reliable which only makes for a more compelling read.
I’m very reluctant to say too much as I really don’t want to give anything away. Basically, truth and lies and her word truly is against his! Excellent for a quick read.
The audible on the book is exceptionally well delivered.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
I downloaded this audioARC from NetGalley, and it was a good listen while getting on with some admin at work.
I felt that Sam's story was somewhat curtailed and he got short shrift in the end - even though he seemed, to me at least, to be the most interesting and sympathetic character.
Otherwise, this is a great addition to the domestic noir genre, with a range of unlikeable characters and a chilling ending.
This is the first novel I've read by Lauren North, and I'll be looking out for her others now.
Three Word Review: No-one is innocent!
My Word Against His by Lauren North is a very tense drama that I enjoyed listening to, the narration was excellent.
The mother is returning from her job at the Citizens Advice Centre when a young man gets in her car and tells her to drive under knifepoint. Throughout the drive the reader senses that other events have happened before either of them have got in the car but it takes time and patience to gather all of the information to find out what is happening.
The woman driving the car is a mother, whose husband left them 13 years ago and now there is only her and her son left, Henry is studying for his A levels now. Sam, the young man in the car needs to get somewhere and it will take over three hours to get there.
Then just before they get close to the destination the car crashes and everything is turned upside down because there is a dead body of a young woman in the boot.
Who is she and why is she there? Who killed her?
In my word against his nothing can be taken for granted in this tense drama.
Highly recommended
I love Lauren's style of writing and her plots that draw you in, chew you up and spit you out again.
My Word Against His was no different. With a small group of characters the plot moved seamlessly from the reader believing one thing and then abruptly discovering they were wrong.
I don't want to say too much to give anything away so will just say... read it!
I draw in from the cover. The audiobook tells yhe story from different characters over different timelines separated by facebook messenger. The pace of the story is fast and the writer's skill in developing the characters narrative shines through. There were points in the audio where I was distracted by a perceived lack of emotion if the Natrator. I couldnt always feel the characters emotions as i could when reading.
The story itself was fast faced full of twists and turns. I was so engrossed in the plot that even bits that normally would be so unrealistic i believe every single word. The skill of the author meant my emotions for the characters changed so much over the course of the book when the ending came although i was blown away i sat wanting more.
The audio version for me needs a little more emotion in places and for that reason only the audio is a 4 star
