I liked the first book in this series even if it dragged a bit. This one was better and faster. I enjoyed the plot and found the characters and the world building well done
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I kew I'd love this after loving the first one, bnut oh wow! We stepped up a nothc. Also - the emotions, who gave the authors permission to destroy me like that. Its action-packed, intense and made me feel so many different emotions. I wasn't expecting all the twists and turns so the story kept me turning page after page, and the plot development was exceptional. While i love that it was a duology (the world needs more duologies) i will miss these characters and i hope we get some side stories too,
Following her first trip to the Underworld, which ended up with friends dead and loyalties questioned, when Deina is offered the chance to destroy Aristaeus and the gods altogether, she sets out on a new quest.
Deina has finally found what matters most to her in all the world. And lost it. To save the one she loves, she's bound herself to the Underworld and an endless future of darkness.
This series offers a fresh slant on Greek mythology with a strong character, this sequel is a good follow up with a satisfying conclusion and offers quite a meaty, challenging read for a thoughtful teen reader
A fabulous sequel to it's predecessor, Queen of God's is a heart stopping (at times heart breaking!) adventure full of mystery, twists and turns and a true rollercoaster of emotions.
Queen of Gods is a fabulous sequel to Daughter of Darkness. The transformation which occurred in one of the main characters was fascinating to watch and there were some truly heart breaking moments, and unexpected twists. Tyche was also an amazing new character. The story explored many interesting topics such as grief and the corrupting influence of power on a person. All in all a great series, even the love triangle didn't put me off despite me usually disliking them in fantasy novels. Excellent!!
Having read book one: Daughter of Darkness last year I was excited to get into Queen of Gods. I'm going to include the same sort of warning or PSA that I put in my last review, that this book "is what I would call Greek Mythology adjacent - in the same camp as Percy Jackson. It's not a retelling which I liked about this book, the Corr sisters make it their own."
Queen of Gods, picks up where Daughter of Darkness leaves off - a cliff-hanger. But it dives straight in, we pick up immediately with Deina, Nat and whole group. In the spirt of trying my best to keep this review spoiler free but also entice you in, there is a love triangle. Now if you aren't a fan of triangles you will be a fan of the God of Death Thanatos who is a participant in this love triangle. Personally, I never liked Theron so there's that.
I was kind of fifty-fifty on the storyline, it went slightly all over the place for me at times and I felt as though I was losing sight of what actually we meant to be feeling, reading and what end we were trying to achieve.
Overall, Queen of Gods wraps up the House of Shadows duology, and now that is it complete you can binge read both books!
Thank you to Bonnier Books UK, Hot Key Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was the perfect addition to Deina's story, I was enthralled each step of her adventure and was loving every twist and turn that occurred during her journey. The bonds between the characters were strengthened and showed true friendship and love and the philosophy of how friends are the family we choose for ourselves. What I love about this series is the inner conflict that Deina shows as she fights between the two sides of her nature. The allure of the world of gods and Nat contrasted with her humanity and her love for Theron has been a whirlwind that has had me turning page after page for this whole series. The Corr Sisters have once again shown exceptional creative skill as they build the world around their characters; the Underworld, Olympus and Poseidon's Realm were all expertly and beautifully depicted. Something that the Corr Sisters have always been able to do is craft near tangible magic that leaves the reader feeling connected and immersed in their books and Queen of Gods only proves this further as Deina's power develops and her characterisation. Deina and Nat are by far my favourite YA characters of this year and House of Shadows is one of my favourite mythology narratives.
First of all, thank you to NetGalley and to Hot Key Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Having read the first one last year, I had really been anticipating the release of this sequel.
This book picked up pretty much exactly where the last had left off, at least for Deina. It took a little while for me to get hooked, but quite a bit of this book had me on the edge of my seat.
This book had some very emotional moments for our Theodesmioi and I was eager to see how this book would play out for them. I was not disappointed.
Nat has a special place in my heart. He was amazing in this book, and I'm relieved for how this story ended for him.
If you are a lover of Greek Mythology then I would recommend that you give this duology a read. It's well paced, well researched, and well written.
Queen of Gods is the second book in the House of Shadows duology. I must admit I didn’t enjoy I’d as much as the first one which was action-packed, intense an hugely compelling. This one fell a little short in that respect and I tried hard to engage with the storyline. There were no particular elements that hooked me into the story and kept me turning the pages and therefore it was a bit of a struggle to get through.
There is no doubt it is well written and well researched, with a plethora of characters. Thanatos, the god of death, still remains a firm favourite. The Corr sisters certainly know their stuff when it comes to writing about gods, magic and Greek mythology and adding their own twist.
Overall, although I enjoyed the mythology elements and being introduced to the different gods, the plot was not gripping enough to hold my attention throughout.
Thank you so much to the publisher for the eARC via Netgalley
A great end to a fab greek mythology duology! I loved the journey Deina went on as she struggled to compress her god nature and keep her humanity. There were times that the narrative felt a little muddled for me, but overall I've loved both of these books and will be keeping an eye out for the next book by these authors!
The blurb says nail-biting, and wow was that true. I breezed through this book in less than a day and can definitely say this was a stunning conclusion to this duology! In fact, I'll go as far as to say this is one of my favourite reads of this year so far, I'll definitely be picking it up as a re-read in the future. I thought the last book was a ride, but this had so many twists that you didn't see coming and it really kept you on your toes guessing what was going to happen next.
Overall, I really think this is my favourite series from Katharine & Elizabeth Corr yet, and I really can't wait to see what they come up with next!
I really enjoyed where this book went it had all the sprinkling of the Greek Gods and Goddesses that we have come to expect in the first book but the epicness of the Greek myths and danger of them, I found myself feeling anxious at all times when reading this and having to find out what happened next and although knowing where it was going to end I knew how it was going to end because this picks up the world of Greek mythology so well that I knew how it was going to go. I am just in awe on how atmospheric this book was and how much I felt myself seeing the whole scenary around it and feeling the nervous tension. I hope that this will continue or will be more written about the Greek mythology and more about the Gods because the authors have a way that you are so drawn into the story. This book has epic fight scenes, moments of devastation as well as moments where you have the sweet moments.
We follow Diena as she journey’s through the consequences of what she did in book one while still reeling with how that impacts her now and what she comes up with is truly and amazing way for her to get her story to where it needs to be. If you love Greek Mythology want something that will make you care about those Greek gods pick up this book.
An incredible end to a unique Greek Mythology inspired duology! I’ve tried to avoid any spoilers for both books in this review, but please proceed with caution!
I was a big fan of Daughter of Darkness, and I was very excited to see how the story ended in Queen of Gods! This did not disappoint!
After the ending of the first book, I was so excited to see how Deina would prevail and, no spoilers, it’s spectacular!
Deina continues to be a standout female character; she didn’t lose her drive or her anger. I loved reading her growth from the first book, and I was rooting for Deina throughout the book!
There is more of a love triangle in this book than the first, but it didn’t dominate the plot. In fact, I enjoyed reading it as Nat and Theron were genuinely interesting characters. Obviously I did have a favourite, and it was the the broody god of death, but I am a cliche.
My favourite element of the first book was how it took Greek myth and give it an original twist, and Queen of Gods definitely continued to do that!
I really enjoyed Queen of Gods, and I would recommend this ya duology to everyone!
Many thanks to Hot Key Books and Netgalley for this e-arc! This review is my own.
Thank you netgalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed most aspects of this book, from the characters to how the plot developed. Because of this, I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone, and cannot wait to read the other works from this author. 4/5 stars!
I have been waiting for this since the ending of the Daughter of Darkness.
The story continued to offer everything its predecessor did, mystery, suspense, action and character development. The story was fast paced, full of Trickery, Treachery and the most delightful Twists and Turns. The House of Shadows duology did not disappoint. It kept me eagerly turning page after page to unearth more of the epic journey.
The themes of Gods versus Humans, fighting for freedoms, how power corrupts, betrayals, heartbreaks and sacrifice are woven throughout the story. While exploring more of the Greek Myths, characters and Lands of various Gods. Including more figures and places certainly enhanced the world building. As did the inclusion of the other houses and exploring them, their magic system and the gods they're linked too further.
Overall I really enjoyed this duology, the ending isn't the one I wanted but ultimately it worked, it sort of felt a bit flat after all the nail-biting tension had throughout, I guess I was expecting an explosive ending.
Plus I rooted more for Deina and Nat, I can’t lose the imagery of them together ruling the Underworld in all their glory!
They just had a ton more chemistry. I mean can we just take a moment to appreciate the perfection that is the God of Death, the sarcastic, the swoon-worthy Thanatos *sigh*
I feel like we just need more Nat, surely we can get a spin off, please?
If you love Fastasy and Greek Mythology then this duology will make you very, very happy.
Thank you NetGalley and tge publisher for the eARC of 'Queen of Gods'
I received this arc in exchange for an honest review.
I'm so happy I picked up this arc. I'd read the first book in the series and while it had started out slow I grew to love it and was desperate to find out what would happen to Deina, Theron and everybody else.
I was not disappointed.
I loved Deina and Theron together but I have to admit I rooted more for Deina and Nat, I felt like they had mounds more chemistry and that was before anything changed regarding Deina's personality and entire being. That said I'm happy with how things ended.
I'd love to read about Aster and Melos and I'd love to read more about Dendris as she was one of my favorite characters.
After reading the previous book in the duology, Daughter of Darkness, and absolutely loving it, I went into Queen of Gods with high expectations. It didn’t disappoint.
The second book in the duology picks up right after we left off in Daughter of Darkness. They have defeated Orpheus and escaped the Underworld. Unfortunately, it came at a high cost. They lost friends along the way, suffered betrayals, and Deina has bound herself to the Underworld to save those she loves.
What follows in Queen of Gods is a thrilling adventure through Greek Myth and the lands of the Gods. The previous book touched on certain myths and legends, and featured some Greek gods and figures, but Queen of Gods brings so much more to life. I won’t spoil who appears in this book, but quite a few of your favourite myths and legends will make an appearance.
After the first book, I was hoping we would see more about the various orders, as the first book focussed on the Order of Hades. In Queen of Gods, we find out a lot more about the Orders of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hephaestus. You see many characters from these orders and find out more about the gods of each, and how the Orders came to be in the first place. It delves deeper into the magic behind each order, and it is fascinating to see.
The characters are amazing in this book too. It’s all told from Deina’s POV, but the way she interacts with each character, and the way they are developed means you intimately know each character’s thoughts and feelings. It really added depth to the book.
Deina is a complicated character, as she has always been, but the things that happened in the first book, and the things she had to do to save everyone slowly change her in this second book. She becomes quite a morally grey character throughout, which I love, and sometimes you will find yourself questioning her actions.
This book introduces some new key characters, who you will love to read about and see on these adventures, and it brings back some characters from the first book.
Overall, this was such an enjoyable read. It was full of adventure, mystery, myth, and legend. It was the perfect way to end the House of Shadows duology.
Another cracker of a read from the Corrs'
I re-read Daughter of Darkness before starting Queen of Gods as there are a fair few characters to keep track of and i'm glad i did. I was able to follow the story from start to finish.
This is full of tense moments but also love. Brilliant duology and I can't wait to see what the Corrs' write next!
Deina is bound to the Underworld and Hades's every whim. For some reason Hades wants her to forsake her humanity and become a God, under her/his rule. She finds a way to visit the mortal realm only to find out her friends are in trouble. Aristaeus has seized power and is searching for them and an artifact to make him even more powerful. Deina goes on a quest to stop Aristaeus and change the fate of the Theodesmioi. Will she succeed without losing everything she holds dear and herself?
Captivating from the start, events continuous in a breath-stealing narrative, this is an impressive sequel. Information is expertly threaded in and between dialogue, thoughts and events, not stoppering the flow of the story. Descriptions are so vivid, so alive, it is almost as if the page is breathing. Bittersweet is the taste of the storytelling.
Smirk-bringing, swoon-worthy Thanatos continues to be my favorite. Deina and Theron pull our heartstrings with the impossibility of their situation. What is Hades's endgame is always on our minds as that little mystery follows us through the clever weaving of the plot and the excellent worldbuilding. In addition, the character development in its intimate honesty, imbues gravitas and warrants a bit of soul-searching.
There is a penchant for long paragraphs here, but they did not bother me as I thought they would. Not when they were written so well. A plethora of wondrous details embellish the world the authors envisioned, including knowledge for the readers to absorb the story.
This book at its core is about choice and freedom. The intricacies of fate and if it actually exists. How much is decided by us and how much is predetermined, if at all? It is about faith in others and yourself. It advises that wanting more out of life is an attainable and far from selfish goal.
The epicness of this finale surpasses expectations, gripping fantasy in its most gifted form. As I read the last pages, tears welling in my eyes, with my hand over my heart as if I could hold it, I realized I had read one of the most brilliant books I will ever read, cementing the Corrs on the walk of favorite authors.
Thank you Bonnier Books UK, Hot Key Books and Netgalley for the arc of Queen of Gods by Elizabeth and Katharine Corr in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Daughter of Darkness was a truly thrilling rollercoaster of a book, that delivered such an intense, action packed adventure filled with mortals, gods, and everything in between. How could I turn down the chance to read Queen of Gods, the second half of the House of Shadows duology?
The story picks up from where Daughter of Darkness ended, Deina is trapped in the Underworld, whilst her friends race off to tell the truth to the houses and share the news of Orpheus. The pace of the story just increases from there, delivering an epic story that crosses all the realms of the godly and mortal world, twisting and turning more than a coiling snake and truly delivery a plot that totally surprises and delights. I seriously did not see a lot of those twists coming, which truly made the story even better!
The world building and magic system are further developed in the second book, building in the mythology that surrounds the gods and the magic, chaos and utter discord they bring to the world.
The story continues to he told from Denia’s POV but, this doesn’t stop the Corr sisters from building and developing a supporting cast of fully formed characters. I would definitely vote for more books about Nat!
I must admit to being a tad disappointed with the ending, I definitely wanted more but, this book does not disappoint and I can’t wait for my pre-ordered edition to arrive.
