Thank you NetGalley for approving me on this one. An enjoyable read with a plot that was engaging, and held attention
This is the nineteenth book in this brilliant series featuring Detective Roy Grace. The book opens with a farmer, leaving his wife in bed after hearing his dogs barking, to investigate the cause but ends up losing his life after being shot dead by the men who were kidnapping his dogs. The family have recently bought the farm and were breeding the dogs to sell and make a living. On investigating the case Grace realises that this is the work of an organised crime gang who are selling the dogs for extortionate prices. Some unsuspecting parents view a puppy from the men for their daughter but it ends up biting her on the nose. This ultimately leads to her being hospitalised and left fighting for her life. I enjoyed meeting up with all the familiar characters from Grace’s team and also with his family who end up unwittingly involved in the case. This was another brilliant read from one of best crime writers.
Thanks to Netgalley and MacMillan books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I have read all of the Roy Grace books and loved them all. This one was no exception. Another great read and as always can't wait for the next one!
In the dead of night, a farmer confronts the
intruders, having no idea that the encounter will leave him dead. What's more chilling is the truth of what the perpetrators were willing to kill for. At the
scene, DS Roy Grace senses that this is no mere botched robbery, it's the tip of the iceberg of a nationwide crime epidemic. Ruthless gangs, operating with military precision have discovered a new black market flourishing in the shadows -an unthinkable source of wealth even more profitable than drugs - dogs!
Despite this being book 19 in the DS Roy Grace
senes Peter James always manages to tap into a different crime that is current and relatable each and every time. In Stop Them Dead it is the turn of puppy trafficking and dognapping. We follow numerous leads all unwittingly tangled
together. Even DS Grace is personally pulled into the crime spree as he is investigating. This is one of the reasons I love returning to this series as Grace's life is just as fascinating to follow as the cases he investigates. James' research is impeccable as each time I finish one of his books a great deal of important knowledge sticks with me. Hopefully I would never fall for any of these seams or dodgy dealings as a result! This book in particular is equal parts heartbreaking and scary as it shows the different ways the public can be severely affected by what should be a simple search for a new pet. Stop Them Dead is the latest in a series that never lets up and is consistently strong.
Another amazing book from an author guaranteed to entertain. A twisty and engrossing tale, kept me gripped throughout.
Another Grace story involving high stakes illegal dog breeding. This seemed more violent than usual and some rather gruesome descriptions.
This is one in a long line of "Grace" books, I dip in and out and don't really read them all but it is a nice feeling to be back in the fold, this is a hard hitting topic with the mistreatment of animals but as usual Grace find a way to solve the crime, overall a good read
I am always excited when there is a new Peter James book out. This was no exception and it was eagerly awaited.. I am such a fan of Peter's writing and of Grace. This book was full of menace and suspense and I really felt for the characters. Another fabulous book in the Peter James' stable.
A story involving dog thefts and illegal puppy trafficking and the organised crime gangs behind it.
The book is excellent and the attention to detail is as always spot on!
Peter James keeps bringing the goods after I’ve read his latest book , I think to myself he can’t better this be he continues to do so.
Roy Grace is investigating dog thefts which as a dog lover is a crime close to his heart , there is also importation of puppies from abroad which takes a dangerous turn involving a young girl.
Murder , organised crime and dog thefts kept me on the edge of my seat .
In my opinion Peter James is the king of the police procedural genre and long may he reign!
Highly recommended!
Thanks to NetGalley and Pan MacMillan.
So it might be overstating things a bit, but this man is a bloody genius. I was planning on reading a horror book for Halloween 🎃... but I don't need to.
THIS is the scariest book you'll read all year.
Well, it is if you're a dog owner. Because this book is about dodgy dog breeders and dog thieves. And that is one of those crimes that could happen to anyone. Because (and you can call me daft if you want), I always thought these crimes only affect dog owners. But what if you're minding your own business and an illegally imported dog bites you? I never considered this, and this book opened my eyes.
And, of course, kept me on the edge of my seat and highly entertained. Roy Grace is back on top. I'm looking forward to book 20!
he latest entry from the master of the crime thriller. Set around the grim criminal enterprise of puppy farming and illegal dog importation, this books builds to a brilliantly crafted finale. Peter James has clearly done his research (as always) and it’s the details seamlessly woven into the text that really draw you into the story.
Although I haven't read all books in this excellent series, every time I do read one, it feels like 'coming home' to Roy Grace, his family and colleagues. This because Peter James very skilfully weaves background information about Grace in every book.
This time, Grace is confronted with one of the most horrible crimes: making money of innocent animals. Of course, it starts with all those people who suddenly want a pedigree dog but are not willing to pay for it.
It happens in many countries and sadly our local paper is also full of reports about this too, because there are a lot of big farmhouses in the area, perfect for hiding stolen dogs and illegal breeding. The story in this book could have been set here, not far from my home.
As soon as the story begins, you can feel some horrible things are about to happen. It's very wise Peter James choose to tell us this story without very graphic descriptions of the conditions these poor animals are kept. There are ruthless criminals in this story, but also loving parents, happy children and of course Grace and his team. There is murder and violence, but also love, even in some people you wouldn't expect. There are grim parts and very moving parts in this book, and it all together makes for a great story.
Thanks to Netgalley and PanMacMillan for this review copy.
Grace is back! When the murder of a farmer leads to illegal puppy farming Grace and his team have their hands full. At the same time someone is abducting dogs from their owners in the parks and open spaces of Brighton and Hove. When a couple of lawyers buy their daughter a puppy from a breeder on the internet it was always going to lead to trouble, but much more than they realised, putting their daughter's life at risk.
Action packed as usual. A good read.
Another brilliant read by an excellent Author never disappoints.
The story line was gripping and captivating, not sure if reading the others would have helped but none the less brilliant
I would recommend this book
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan for my copy of Stop Them Dead by Peter James.
Roy Grace and his team find themselves investigating a very topical subject, theft of a very specific item.
It comes to their attention when a man is killed trying to stop thieves who target his farm in the dead of night.
This is a very well researched book and compelling reading. You will find yourself racing to the end but slowdown we have a year to wait for the next installment.
Another terrific read from a great storyteller.
I enjoy the Grace and Branson series and the style of writing. A solid four star read. Great premise. Good characters. Page turner. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing Would definitely read the next novel. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
Peter James's latest novel featuring Roy Grace, has an important message at its heart. Now if I'm honest, any preaching usually has me closing a book and moving to something less bossy.... but if the story of theft of dogs and puppy farming makes just one person stop and think, it is worthwhile. Plus Peter James manages to tell a good story at the same time as getting the message out there.
In short, I loved Stopped Them Dead, in the same way as the rest of this series has appealed to me. As soon as I finish, I am eagerly awaiting the next instillment.
I love this series and it was great to catch up with Grace and the team.
A man is woken in the early hours by his dogs barking and when he checks, there are intruders on his land. He goes out to investigate and finds four men stealing his dogs. When he challenges them, it doesn’t end well.
Grace and Branson head out to investigate and realise the stolen dogs were worth several thousand pounds.
Other incidents soon come to light of dogs being stolen and also imported illegally and treated badly and Grace knows this is a big case.
When a woman linked to the farm they’ve been monitoring is killed in a road accident it soon comes to light that it was not an accident.
I’m glad there was no animal cruelty detailed in the book as this would have put me off. As it stands the issue of dog trafficking and theft was handled well in the book.
This is a great crime thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Thanks to Pan MacMillan and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Another gripping story from Peter James featuring DS Roy Grace. I have found some of this series a little too far fetched so was glad to find this novel is a more credible one. It focuses on the illegal importation and theft of dogs which leads to the murder of a dog breeder.
Grace is considering buying another puppy to be a companion for his dog Humphrey and he encounters a dodgy breeder. This puts him on the trail of an unscrupulous dog trader.
This novel is an in-depth police procedural with touches of humour and some weird characters which I can definitely recommend for Peter James fans and those reading his novels for the first time.
Thank you to the publishers for the ARC.
From the riveting opening scenes through to the end Grace and co. are on the trail of illegal dog smuggling and the devastating consequences of this crime. Nice gentle developments in the subplots, it’s like catching up with old friends, and the engrossing main plot, make for a fabulous addition to this fantastic series
