Explosive plot with twists. I enjoyed learning more about Miranda and her husband.
Many thanks to Black Rose Writing and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a really solid thriller about the host of a nighttime legal talk show, Miranda Nights, who is suddenly stalked by a man who wants to teach her a lesson about the seven deadly sins. At the same time, Miranda is trying to help her best friend's son, who has been accused of a serious crime.
I didn't realize this was book two of a series, but it read it easily as a standalone. Miranda is a compelling character and the mystery/thriller was well crafted. It is an enjoyable read for mystery/thriller fans.
I received a free copy of this book from Black Rose Writing via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.
It is hard to give this a proper review because I did not know it was a sequel. I would have enjoyed it much more if I had the chance to read the first book beforehand. I will come back to this one after I read its predecessor and see if my opinion changes. :)
The mistake I made was not realising this novel was a sequel. I assume if I'd read the prequel I'd have more context to the characters and plot. The plot has promise, a lawyer with a radio show acquires a stalker who calls her show connecting her to the seven deadly sins and her need to atone for her sins.
A fairly lightweight read and the plot feels fairly minor, it's all resolved pretty quickly and neatly without much fanfare, as did the secondary plot which amounted to very little. This isn't a tense read and it's certainly not a page-turner. I grew a bit bored with the over wrung food descriptions and the repeated reminders that Miranda is a very good friend, a very good person, and a very good wife.
Not a memorable read for me but again i think it's because I hadn't read the prequel.

When I turned the last page on Miranda Writes, I wished for a sequel…and my wish came true. Miranda Quinn is a former lawyer/podcast host/blogger/daytime television show personality who has finally settled into the life she’s always wished for: a job she loves, a husband to share her life with and an extended family that makes her feel like she belongs. Until her past comes back to haunt her. Filled with incredibly relatable characters, a propulsive plot and enough suspense to keep me turning the pages quickly, this book kept me on my toes. Once again, I connected with the characters, felt deeply and learned a thing or two from Miranda about living true and having faith that everything works out in the end. I’m hoping for a third installment.
Miranda Quinn is a former Assistant District Attorney who has had some major ups and downs in her life. Everything is back on track. She has a wonderful husband, she is hosting a popular late-night, call-in radio show named Miranda Nights where she gives legal advice, and she has a close-knit group of family and friends. But Miranda's life, once again, starts to derail, beginning with the arrest of her best friend's sixteen-year-old son. His alleged crime could put him away for years. Just when she is trying to help, Miranda starts getting bizarre and threatening calls to her show from a man who may have a grudge against her. Her audience is intrigued by this strange caller. Miranda's sponsors are not, and it puts the show in jeopardy. The stalker's behavior elevates and puts Miranda in real danger.
I enjoyed author Gail Ward Olmsted's book Miranda Writes. Her latest, Miranda Nights continues the story two years later. It isn't essential that you read the first book, but it sets the stage for the sequel. It's an intelligent, witty, fast-paced story. Miranda is a well-developed, great character who is smart and savvy. While not a steamy book, you can sense the passion she enjoys with her husband Eric. Miranda's relationship with her father is endearing, as is her devotion to her best friend Tracey. It's a very good blend of legal intrigue and domestic relationships worth checking out.
4.25 stars.
An easy read centred on a lawyer who has a radio show where people can call in and ask for legal information. One chilling caller, at the end of each show, tells Miranda that she needs redemption and he is the only one that can grant this.
A great premise, however I felt that the plot is under developed and I was waiting for something big to happen, while reading about Miranda’s perfect marriage, constant eating and mundane questions from her listeners.
There is a prequel to this book and I believe there would be more context if I had read this one and that those who have read the other book will have a better connection to the story, which sadly didn’t really work for me.
2 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Miranda Nights
by Gail Ward Olmsted
THis was an okay book. Just not as grand as I expected. It was an easy enough read, but not one I related with.
This book is a Hallmark crime story with a hint of Gilmore Girls stream of consciousness style writing. I think reading the first book in the series would have given more context for some of the decisions that Miranda was making and led to a better connection to the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Black Rose Writing for the advanced copy!
