This is the second time I've read this book and I can honestly say that this re-read was even more enjoyable. It says a lot that I devoured this 800+ page tome in less than 48 hours! The lives of the characters were so well drawn and compelling and all of the intricacies of Shire life were fascinating. Overall, this was an absolute delight and I will immediately move on to Pillars of the Earth. Loved it!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I enjoy all Ken Follett's books as sweeping sagas to get lost in and this one was no disappointment. It could, however, have done with some judicious editing, as many explanations of circumstances or people's relationships were repeated throughout the book as though the reader would not remember. I would still recommend all his books though as there's nothing more I like better than getting one to read on holiday when you can immerse yourself in his historical settings.
I'm someone who loves the genre of Historical fiction and had to pick this up given Ken Follett's work and the premise of this book. This is a prequel to Kingsbridge series and can be read as a standalone or as a continuation.
The book takes some time to dive into and is a bit of a slow burn. Would however recommend reading it.
Thanks NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for this e-arc in exchange of my unbiased review.
Ken Follett's Kingsbridge series are a wonderful way of immersing yourself in history that can sometimes be a little dry in non fiction accounts. He vividly immerses you in a time and place without showing you how much research he must have done. The books are page turners, totally engrossing, and full of information. The Evening and the Morning is a prequel to the series and a fantastic way for someone to start at the very beginning of the story, or a great way to go back and re-read all the books but starting with something new.
