With witty characters like that of Lucy Score and a plot twist rivaling Frieda McFadden, it was hard to put down this brilliantly written book!

SUMMARY
After her mother's death, Holly decided to live her life to the fullest, spending a summer away from her home in England and relocating to the small seaside town of Martha's Vineyard, USA. However, after not answering her phone or posting on social media for a prolonged period, her cousin, Jess, became so worried that she sought the help of Holly's sister, Claire. Initially hesitant to worry, Claire insisted Holly was a typical 22-year-old sleeping off a hangover after boundless beach parties and bottomless booze. Still, when days passed, and the local police department didn't seem to take the situation seriously, Claire took it upon herself to travel to Holly's temporary home and investigate for herself.

The tranquil, welcoming island of Martha's Vineyard brought Claire comfort as she placed together the pieces of her sister's disappearance but also proved how close-knit small towns can be. Who is protecting whom? Who knows the truth? And who can be trusted?

REVIEW
It has been a long time since I read a thriller I couldn't put down, but The Summer Girl by Jenny Blackhurst succeeded wildly! This book is a fast-paced psychological thriller that sincerely springs to life through the setting. Blackhurst does a phenomenal job at bringing the reader into the warm ocean breeze of Martha's Vineyard. You genuinely feel like you are right there alongside Claire.

The characters are also robust and well-developed, and I enjoyed how the dual POV and nonlinear timeline enhanced the text. The style of dual POV was a little different (1st/3rd), but it worked well and gave the reader a great insight into the characters' thoughts and feelings. Claire gave me major Lucy Score vibes via her wittiness and humor; I loved every second of her personality! The way the characters engaged with each other and were unpredictable at times kept me hanging onto my seat. I was genuinely shocked by this plot twist! The ending, though we are hinted toward in the Prologue, left me with my jaw dropped! I recommend The Summer Girl by Jenny Blackhurst to any reader who enjoys a fantastic thriller novel.

This was a really good book that I pretty much read in one sitting. It centers on Claire, whose younger sister Holly decides to spend the summer traveling to Martha’s Vineyard from England after the death if their mother. Claire feels abandoned and is not happy with Holly, but when Holly stops answering her phone, Claire knows something is wrong and travels there to find her. The book is told from both Claire’s current timeline and Holly’s from before her disappearance.

The book is tense and twisty and the author does a great job of making sure the reader doesn’t know who to trust. I went back and forth a couple times about who I thought was hiding the most. Both Claire and Holly are likable and believable characters. I found the book to be so very sad, with terrible decisions made by characters in the heat of the moment having irrecoverable consequences for the lives of those around them. I have a feeling the book will stick with me. There was one tertiary loose end that I wish had been tied up, but overall I was satisfied with the way the story ended.

Overall, really engrossing read that provides a great mystery along with tugging at your heartstrings. I plan on going back to check out the books by this author that I haven’t yet read. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an hiensy review.

Claire and Holly’s mum passed away and Holly has decided life is too short and has travelled to Martha’s Vineyard, complete with a job and place to stay. Claire is still at home living in their home, not living her best life. Then, Holly disappears and no contact with Claire and their cousin, Jess, which is completely out of character. Claire contacts the police and they assume Holly is hungover somewhere and aren’t interested. Claire decides to travel there and find Holly herself. During her searching, Claire finds lots of secrets and lies.

The descriptions used to describe the settings in this book were brilliant and really made you feel like you were travelling with Holly and Claire. We read the story from both Holly’s and Claire’s perspectives, ensuring we get the full story and the feelings of both sisters. There were excellent twists and turns within, and some I would never have guessed. The writing was excellent, as usual by this author. Highly recommended.

I have loved all of Jenny Blackhurst other books. So I was thrilled to receive an early ARC of this. And it did not disappoint. Tight pacing, visceral writing and some great twists! Wow. I might have just found a new favorite author.
This book is about a girl, Holly, who travels to the US for the summer after her mom passes away. Her sister, Claire, is back in the UK when their cousin Jess receives an odd text from Holly’s phone. They know immediately that Holly didn’t send it, so Claire travels to where Holly has been staying in order to find her missing sister. The story is dual timeline between Holly in the days leading up to her disappearance, and Claire’s search for her sister. This story sucked me in immediately, a true “whodunnit,” I didn’t know who to trust, and I could not stop reading until I found out who did it! Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy.

Holly Matthews leaves England to travel to the US to work in Martha’s Vineyard for the summer. Her sister Claire isn’t happy about Holly’s trip. And when Holly stops calling and responding to text messages, Claire is immediately alarmed and ends up traveling to Massachusetts in hopes of finding her sister. The book switches back and forth from the past to present day following the days up to Holly’s disappearance. Claire learns about the Slayton brothers, Bobby and Ryan, who are the local rich kids. Holly had been involved with both boys, but both claim to know nothing of her disappearance. Claire is fighting time and up against a police force and residents who don’t seem to be concerned about her missing sister. When she learns that another girl had gone missing and was found murdered years ago in the town, she is even more desperate to find Holly before it’s too late. I enjoyed this novel and although the end seemed a little far fetched to me, I think it was an overall good story. I gave the novel 3.5 stars.

However, a month into her summer, Holly goes missing, and her sister Claire if forced to travel from England to search for her. Claire soon finds herself deep into a world of wealth and power, where actions don't have consequences. The Summer Girl isn't necessarily a happy read, but it is very well-written and leaves the reader thinking about the characters and the story long after putting the book down. There are plenty of twists throughout the book leading to a big reveal at the end.
I haven't read anything by Jenny Blackhurst before; however, after reading The Summer Girl, I will definitely be reading her other books.

This starts out amazingly. I could not put it down. I was at work stealth reading.
I even sat in my car for a long period of time. There are so many little reveals and so much suspense. I wouldn't say this is a happy or comforting book at all. It feel raw but is beautiful.

I loved the ending.

When Claire’s best friend comes to her with concerns that Claire's sister Holly is in danger, she doesn't know what to think. Holly had traveled from England to Martha's Vineyard for the Summer and was living the a care-free summer life while working at a marina. She has no choice however, but to travel to the island to find her. Blackhurst creates a beautiful summer scene at the island which conflicts directly with the callous reception that the police and other locals show her when she arrives. No one seems to take Holly's disappearance seriously, even when Claire discovers that the mystery may be connected to an event 5 years ago. Who can she turn to for help? Can she find Holly before time runs out?

Great mystery, awesome sense of scene and atmosphere. Take a trip to Martha's Vineyard with this story and try and solve the mystery of The Summer Girl!

I could not put this book down, I finished it within 12 hours. Claire’s sister Holly has gone to Martha’s Vineyard for the summer and she quit answering any texts or calls from anyone, which is very unlike her. Claire ends up going to the vineyard to look for her over the course of a week or so. She encounters the rich, popular boys who get away with everything and starts digging into them and trying to find her sister. A lot of events involving a lot of shady people and friends transpire. About halfway through I had a feeling I may know what happened (which turned out to partially be true) but regardless, the last 25% really had you so enthralled and was overall unexpected. I really enjoyed this book and would absolutely read another book by this author. Thank you for the ARC opportunity!

I absolutely love this book for beginning to end. There was a lot of mystery and supense and twists and turn.
I just felt myself wanting more and I never expected the end.
I also love hearing about Martha's Vineyard and it makes me wanting to go visit.

Claire's sister, Holly, has decided to live her best life after their mom has passed away. In a burst of spontaneity, she travels from England to Martha's Vineyard in America, with a job in the marina and a place to stay all lined up. But then Holly goes missing, and the local police department can't seem to be bothered to start an investigation. After all, Holly is a summer girl. They come and go from the island every year. But Claire knows her sister isn't like that and sets out to discover what happened to Holly by herself.

Martha's Vineyard, while occupied by residents all year round, is very much a rich kids' playground. During the summer, two brothers in particular, appear to be running the community. Bobby and Ryan suffer from the stereotypical rich kid syndrome, and seeing as they're related to the (in)famous Kennedy clan, they seem to be able to get away with anything as the local police turns a blind eye to their shenanigans.

Basically, you're never really in doubt of these brothers being guilty of something. It's just trying to figure out of what exactly, and whether or not they're somehow connected to Holly's disappearance. It's obvious that nobody in this community dares to stand up to them, somehow feeling it's a battle they will never be able to win. But their reluctance to do so, and the brothers' notion that they are untouchable, has devastating consequences. Holly isn't the first girl to go missing in Martha's Vineyard. There was another one five years ago, who was tragically found dead a few days later. Nobody was ever arrested. Is the same fate awaiting Holly?

'The Summer Girl' is not just about Holly's disappearance and what happened to her, or why. It is about dealing with such a sudden and unexpected event, going over and over the last words that were spoken. It is also about dealing with the crippling grief of losing a loved one, how trying to find out the truth can turn into an obsession and drive you nearly crazy. It is about finding a way to move on, hoping for some kind of closure, seeing justice served.

On the other hand, it is also shining a light on people's reluctance to get involved. Sometimes keeping your mouth shut is far worse than speaking out. If the residents had been more outspoken, if they'd had the backbone to face these brothers .... if, if, if. What might the outcome have been? The ultimate conclusion in 'The Summer Girl' is also immensely thought-provoking and could quite possibly make a fascinating topic for a book club discussion. It's remarkably difficult to decide if the right thing was done. I know, vague. You should read it, then you'll know what I'm talking about.

'The Summer Girl' was just right up my street. Great characters, even the cliché ones. A mystery to solve. Sometimes even surprisingly witty, definitely near the beginning of the story. Claire's chapters in the present were equally absorbing as Holly's which were set a few weeks earlier, as the reader discovers what happened in the lead-up to her disappearance. All this ending in a satisfying conclusion. 'The Summer Girl', for me, is Jenny Blackhurst at her absolute best.

The setting is glorious and the young people having fun in the sun is perfect
Beneath all the sunshine, beauty and seeming endless days and fun filled nights, there lies a darkness
I highly recommend this as a summer mystery. A good bite to the tale
The sense of place is amazing. I could taste the sea air and feel the sun on my back

This book is well worth staying up half the night to finish reading because I couldn’t let go. The plot was amazing and the ending came out of nowhere. Fantastic characters with the sassiest and best remarks ever. Don’t miss this book!

This is perfect for a quick suspense beach read. The beginning started off a bit slow and then ramped up at the end. The ending was a bit predictable but the storyline still kept my attention throughout the book.
