Fresh and at times humorous take on the challenges of veterans adjusting to civilian life, without the sentimental cliches of some similar books I've read recently.
I especially enjoyed the interplay between Zinny and Major Jack, the way Zinny keeps making rookie errors in his new life as investigator, and the way Jack is determined to get them both in trouble. At times I felt some of the dialogue scenes could have been tighter, but overall and entertaining read.

Army veteran Zinny Zubell is forced into retirement. After twenty years of service, he’s looking to get back into civilian life and thinks a career as an investigator might be the right path. With his veteran buddy, Major Jack Klinkscales, he heads to Charlotte to start over.
He quickly finds himself in a rather puzzling situation, hired to do work privately, off the books, for an attorney. None of it sits right with him, and when the odd “job” ends, he can’t shake the feeling there’s more to it than he was told. His sense of duty is too strong to let it go.
With the mysterious death of a local woman, and plenty of questionable characters in tow, there is a thriller aspect to it. However, the relationship between Zinny and Jack is more intriguing to unfold.
This is a thriller, yes, but what I really enjoyed was the experience of the army veteran returning to civilian life and all the challenges that brought him. This is more than a mystery, but an interesting study of a man adapting to a new life after living in extraordinary circumstances.
Good book to read at night. And good author. And story was good too.If you like mystery and thriller.
Zinny Zubell is an Army veteran who gets pushed out and is looking for a meaningful way to keep himself busy. He helps out a veteran buddy and tries to settle down in Charlotte. But he doesn’t feel likw its a great fit. He gets hired to investigate a businessman and feels things are a bit shady. Zinny sense of duty and obligation to serve, along with his friendship carry him through. Liked his drive to seek the truth and comradery with his friend. Enjoyed the story very much.
Former US military buddies Zinny Zubell and Major Jack Klinkscales (don’t you just love that name?) get involved with uncovering the truth behind a lady found dead in a lake, Zin, looking to keep himself busy after being released from a burgeoning military, starts work for a law firm, The task he is given is a simple one and that puzzles him. Being of a curious nature and determined to find out the truth, Zin digs and digs and doesn’t let anybody derail his none too subtle enquiries. For me, the strongest part of this book was the relationship between Zin and Jack. The story itself could have benefited from some surprise turns but, that said, I was happy being in Vin’s company and I can see scope for him as an investigator if that’s the way that things transpire. The settings were well drawn and the dialogue throughout was particularly strong.
