I am so thankful to netgalley to have been chosen to read an arc of this book. It was filled with great characters, a wonderful and intriguing storyline, events that left me guessing and never figure out, and a community and wholesome feel. I will continue with the series

A child disappears from her luxury clifftop home & her body is found on the beach. Erica Sands is the lead detective. She has also been paired with a raw fast tracked detective, son of the boss's friend & someone Erica met under less than optimal circumstances the night before. When the case literally blows up & she is injured & suspended. Then along came Covid.

Christine lost her husband to Covid & now she wants a new start with her two children. The clifftop house looks perfect, with Covid everything gets done online & it is not until they arrive she realises that they actually just have half a house. The other half belongs to the architect, whose daughter (who happens to be the same age as her Molly!) was murdered. She is convinced there is something suspicious about their neighbour.

Sadly, although I was involved enough to read it to the end, this was not not a good read for me. Erica Sands got my back up. Her attitude to her new partner was awful - OK she was embarrassed but... Then breaking the news that their daughter was dead in such a callous way was unforgivable. She did improve as the narrative went on but the damage was done by then. Christine was annoying & I struggled to connect with her.

Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book. It wasn't one for me, so I'll not be looking for Book 2!

I rate this title 3,

The story is told from two perspectives:
Erica Sands from the police and Christine Harvey, a private citizen.

I found Erica Sands to be a fairly standard acceptable character, but Ms. Harvey was written as more of a stereotypical panicky woman.

The writing was acceptable and the plot was good enough, but I didn't enjoy how much of the book hinged on the pandemic. I get that it's something that people will write about, but I had enough of it without having to read about it. It seemed quite a lot of it was plot convenience. It played a huge part in the story. Personally, I didn't enjoy that.

Animal cruelty. I never enjoy that in a book. I understand why it was relevant, but I automatically shy away from that type of content.

I found the dialog during a key scene near the end to be unrealistic, which made it difficult to stay invested in the story.

Literally could not put this down until I finished it at 3am!
A fantastic storyline with so many red herrings and garden paths to follow that even as an experienced armchair detective the resolution still blew me away!

I really enjoyed The Cove! Just as you begin to relax and get into the story, everything changes. The entire book has turns and twists I didn’t see come. I enjoyed the main character and her dedication to searching for the truth!

I personally would give this book a 3.5 out of 5 rating. The book was slow, would get interesting and then go back to a little flat. The last 40 pages of the book were the main thrill seeking pages. I wish there had been more of this throughout the entire book. However, the story was good and suspenseful.

The Cove was by far one of the most gripping books I have read in a while, though there are some trigger warnings to be taken into account.

Gregg Dunnett's books are a recent discovery for me, and so far, I am really enjoying his writing. He is a perceptive observer of human behaviour, and that is reflected in the depth of his characters.

The Cove is the first in Dunnett's series about police officer Erica Sands, an intriguing protagonist who has more than her fair share of secrets - not least where her father is concerned...

This tale encompasses diverse story element in a way that does justice to the complexity of the issues it addresses. A child who sees things that they are not supposed to. A father whose behaviour borders on the psychopathic. A little girl who meets a gruesome death just a short distance away from her home. A body found on a nearby beach. A neighbour who has no idea what she has got herself into. How can she be so oblivious, and how high a price will she have to pay for her mistakes?

Dunnett weaves these threads together to create a chilling tale that will capture the reader's attention. This is a thriller that delivers what it says on the box, but it is not for those with a weak constitution.

This is the tragic story of an 8-year-old girl found murdered and mutilated on a beach. Her family recently moved to a new home overlooking a beautiful bay. The mother is very excited about the times she will have to share the bay and the beach with her daughter. But it will never happen.

The murder is the first investigation in this locale in seven years. The mother and father are devastated. The prime suspect is an escapee from a mental institution, but the prime question is: How was he able to get into a newly built and secured house on the beach, abduct the child, and take her to the water?

The writer keeps the tension high as the investigation continues. Following the near manic thought processes of the mother are exhausting.

A masterful switch at the end startled me and made me question what I thought I knew about the entire story. The writer has a macabre imagination regarding a very dysfunctional family. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good crime thriller saga. 4.5 stars - CE Williams

A very difficult subject of the death of a child by a known sex offender.
Christine has moved from London after the death of her husband unknowingly moving into the adjoining house of the murdered girl’s parents. What she sees makes her terrified that the police have the wrong killer. She is convinced that her neighbour is the real killer of his daughter. Will he come after her daughter next?
Twisted and dark and unpredictable. Gregg has Dunnet again! Another great story that kept me up all night reading.
Thank you NetGalley, Storm Publishing & Gregg Dunnet for an advanced copy of this rollercoaster of a read.

I am severely regretting not getting to this book until now but I really never anticipated just how amazing it would be!!

Where to even start?! It's unique, original, and so cleverly written.

It was some of the best twists I've read this year and is easily one of my top 10 of 2023 so far.

The characters are well written and multiple povs gives such a clear insight into who they are

Nothing about this book is like anything you've read before! Don't hesitate to dive right in!!

Immersive, intense and individual, this psychological thriller held my attention throughout. Part one introduces Erica Sands, a driven police detective with a secret, The impactful conclusion to the first part resonated and made reading the next part essential. I like the characterisation. Erica is clever and complex. Golding is the perfect partner for her professionally; hopefully, his character will develop in the next book. Christine is an unreliable narrator and hard to read. The adrenaline-fueled story has unexpected twists, suspense and a menacing ethos. It's disturbing to read in parts and even poignant. The contemporary setting adds to the atmosphere. I like the detectives, the impactful twists and the modern setting.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

The Cove by Gregg Dunnett

First time read by this author , and won't be the last , loved it.
It was very good to read about a time that was effected by Covid , many authors have not set their books in this time so I felt it very relevant.
Loved the setting of the book , the description was so vivid you can almost feel you are there.
Great plot , fantastic characters and a fair amount of twists to keep you guessing.
Can really see it working as a t.v. series.

I loved this book! My heart broke for Christine who lost her husband to covid and moved her family to their new dream home to get a fresh start. What she didn’t know is she moved her family into a nightmare. I read this book while on vacation and couldn’t put it down.
