The Cove - Gregg Dunnett 5*

In beautiful Lulworth Cove the body of a young girl is discovered. DCI Erica Sands is given the job of finding murderer. Before she can even get started, she is handed the responsibility of a new recruit to the team, Detective Golding, son of a friend of Erica’s boss, so she has little choice. When she actually meets Luke Golding, Erica is surprised and shocked, having met him before in less official circumstances!

I have read Gregg Dunnett from the start, and have really enjoyed all his books, but this one is in a different class, he really is going from strength to strength. In this case there are a few tweaks needed, with a couple of loose ends that could have been tied up, but each new work that is produced is captivating, exciting and full of suspense. This book is the start of a series and I honestly can’t wait for the next book. An excellent start for Erica and her team, loved it!

Thank you NetGalley.

When the body of a young girl is found on the beach, the evidence leads them straight to a local criminal. But is the case as clear cut as they first expected…?

WOW! From page 1, this is an action packed and gripping thriller. I was completely hooked! Full of plot twists and utterly chilling in places.
I loved Gregg Dunnett’s imaginative and clever writing style. A very believable story that felt like it could easily have been a plot straight out of CSI or Criminal Minds.

Would 100% recommend and would definitely read more from this author again.

Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for ad advanced copy.

I could not put this book down. Plot twists, red herrings, fully engaging. Dunnett developed each character and pulled this reader into their story. The point of view twisted enough to make many of the characters the "main" character. But there was only one all along. A great read.

Great book! Wow I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! This book had it all! It had suspense, intrigue, action, brutal murder, kidnapping, serial killers, a great who done it that I never saw coming, great police work and so many crazy twists and turns! The storyline was so very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

A gripping thriller that weaves in the action of crime dramas, this book made me feel like I was reading the book equivalent to Criminal Minds! The action-packed sequences and the exploration of the killer's dark deeds make for an intense reading experience. Dunnett's writing successfully captures the essence of a crime drama, allowing readers to vividly imagine the action shots and immerse themselves in the gritty details of the murders. The suspense and intrigue keep the pages turning and made it almost impossible to put down and go to bed.

However, while "The Cove" excels in its thrilling atmosphere, there are some areas that could have been further developed. The author places significant emphasis on particular characters, creating an expectation of their significance to the plot. Unfortunately, these characters do not end up being as significant as the author sets them up to be. Then the characters that do matter do not get the depth and attention they deserve, leaving the reader wanting more. This discrepancy in character development and focus on extraneous details ultimately leaves some aspects of the story feeling unresolved and lacking depth.

Nevertheless, "The Cove" remains a compelling read, providing a thrilling experience for fans of crime fiction. The immersive nature of the narrative and the exploration of the killer's actions make it an engaging and suspenseful journey. I would recommend this to my audience of thriller lovers, and I think it is a great introduction to a series.

I would like to thank Storm Publishing for providing me with an advance copy of "The Cove."

I’m normally not super into crime thrillers, but this was one was fantastic. It did lean more toward psychological thriller in my opinion, which is my favorite genre. It kept me guessing and I flew through the pages.

This book is a crime thriller, the first in an intended series around central character DI Erica Sands. This book juggles the perspective of two different POV narratives, as well as jumping a six month time frame after a prolonged introduction into DI Sands case which is central to this book.

I did not see the twist coming at all, it was very unexpected and itself led to a second twist. The plot was unique, well written and kept the reader on edge - particularly towards the end.

One thing I did not enjoy about the book was the inaccuracies around medical references. There were a lot of factual errors around medicine (or at least UK medicine where the book is set) - for example, doctors haven’t worn white coats for twenty years at least. These errors are frustrating to a reader who would know otherwise and I think the inaccuracies do weaken the circumstance around the first twist in quite significantly for a reader who is familiar with medical settings. However these seemed to be related to the plot of this book only, and it wouldn’t put me off reading further books by this author as the ongoing twists plus the writing style was otherwise excellent.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I'm a long-time fan of the author, and this doesn't disappoint. He tells a good story, and it had several twists that I wasn't expecting. The only thing that bugged me a little was that the 6 month time frame between narratives seemed a little short. Other than that, this is a solid effort.

I will absolutely continue to read his books! I received a complimentary copy of the novel from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
