Evie and Alice are the two lead characters in this gripping book. Best Friends… well, as friendly as two sociopaths can get. One has everything the other wants, but what lengths will they go to to get everything back?
Jam packed with deceit and lies, I read this in two sittings. I didn’t like either of them, though I did sympathise with Evie’s childhood trauma.
As someone who’s suffered a miscarriage, the first 50% of the book was quite a hard read. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who’s suffered fertility issues.
I enjoyed it though and would read this author again. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the advanced copy.
this was a real surprise. Loved the characters and had lots of sympathy for the main character. Also loved the twist at the end, not really a thriller but definately pyschological, i really enjoyed this book
I liked this book, it kept me reading and wanting more! Major twist at the end and I totally get comparing it to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train - but I think there was a lot of things missing in this book.
First off the 'drowning' I didn't even know it was a drowning until the end when it was mentioned again. I felt like it wasn't explained fully for the reader to understand. Also the Uncle I was a little confused about too, I didn't catch the part where it was Alice's dad. Especially because it seemed like he was hanging out at Evie's house, so it seemed like it was her Uncle.
There was parts in the e-book where the " didn't end so it was confusing on when the spoken statement had ended. Also, throughout the book when there was a conversation, they weren't labeled with who was talking so I had to go back and just assume who was who speaking. The 'then' and 'now' didn't feel like it lined up with the timelines and I felt like could be taken out.
A gripping psychological thriller that will keep you hooked from the start, filled with secrets, betrayal and suspense.
'Love and hate are two sides of the same coin'.
Synopsis
Alice and Evie have been best friends since they were children, but they've had very different upbringings. Alice can do no wrong, whereas Evie can - and all the blame falls onto her.
In the present, in Boston, Evie and her husband's marriage is in turmoil - pregnancy losses and secrets. Whereas in Surrey, Alice lives the instagram-worthy lifestyle - three kids, perfect house, a dog and Evie's childhood boyfriend as her husband.
When Evie and her husband's marriage breaks apart, she takes a secondment to the UK - rekindling her friendship with Alice.. and Alice's husband. From here it's twists, turns, secrets and betrayals that will keep you on the edge of your seat, not knowing which direction the story will take you next.
'I text his wife. I make plans with her. I lie to her when I'm with him and I lie to him when I'm with her'.
Thoughts
The characters are definitely a bunch of sociopaths when it comes to each other and I enjoyed every second of it.
The change between past and present gives insight into Evie's life then and now, and how much Alice took from her, it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat with the twists and turns!

Former best friends since they were little, two women are separated growing up. A tragic accident and one girl is sent away. Fast forward to adulthood are they still best friends? What lengths do they go to? This thriller kept a quick pace as the reader follows the relationship. How far will they go? How well do they know each other?
OMG! I loved this book. It was full of suspense and surprises. I was hooked and read this in 2 days. I could get that the author is a firm believer in feminism and I loved how it was molded into the story as witty humor.
Are they friends? Do they love each other? Do they hate each other? Do they envy each other?
The book kept me on my toes.
100% recommended for all thriller lovers.
Wow I loved this book it kept me on my toes and the twists and turns were everything
I can’t get enough of how I wanted the villain to have a happy ending it’s just so funny how that happens. I give it up to the author because you put your foot in that
5/5 stars I loved it so much
I read this book in one sitting. This is a great thriller full of betrayal, secrets, twists and suspense. The story alternates between the past and present slowly revealing secrets that get even more sinister as the story moves along. There was not a dull moment in this book and the ending did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this psychological thriller!
There is a trigger warning for infertility, IVF, and miscarriage. The author really portrayed the emotional and physical aspects of such a journey just as skillfully as someone who has personally gone through it. I was really impressed with the accuracy and how the author captured the details of the process.
Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for digital ARC.
Thank you for the ARC!
This book caught my attention from the beginning. Loved the characters and the story. I could not put this book down! 5 stars !
Trigger warning, this book deals a lot with Infertility and Pregnancy Loss. For me, this hit hard as I went through it years ago trying to get pregnant. Even now it’s still not easy to read about, fiction or not. I’m glad it’s out there, because even though this a work of fiction and a thriller, I think it’s good for people to see how he’d it is for some people. Now onto the book. I thought this was very well written and had. Lot going on. The characters were not very likable, but I don’t always need to like them. I liked the back and forth story lines, it helped really get to know the “best friends” as kids and adults. All in all, well written and an interesting read, definitely a great thriller!
Best Friends is a great psychological thriller told in two timelines. As teenagers in the 1990s Evie and Alice were best friends. Now Evie is married to Ollie and trying unsuccessfully to have a baby. During an all women's conference she thinks she sees Alice. Curious to know what became of her Evie begins to stalk Alice online and discovers that Alice has everything that she. Evie wants: a family and a successful career, the epitome of ''having it all'. She also has married Evie's first love. After Alice accepts Evie's friend request the story becomes darker and secrets are revealed. A real roller coaster of a read! Many thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Best Friends.
Between struggling with IVF and hitting the glass ceiling, Evie tries to break out of the slump by attending an all-women’s conference. But the sight of an old friend sends Evie down a slow spiral that quickly makes her fly out of control. At first it’s just Facebook stalking, sending a friend request, a little obsessing about the past—then Alice accepts Evie’s friend request and begs to be back in Evie’s life. Evie accepts—before she finds out Alice married her first love.
It’s not fair. Alice got everything Evie wanted. The man, the family, the career. What does Evie have to do to get those things? Whatever it is, Evie decides she’ll do what it takes to get the life she’s always wanted: The life Alice stole from her.

I absolutely loved this book! Evie was a great MC, the plot was so dynamic it felt never-ending, and my god those twists! At one point I thought I was getting whiplash from all the surprise turns the plot took but I just held onto the edge of my seat and kept on until the end. It was so worth it! de Winter’s writing is so sharp it could cut your eyeballs if you read too fast. She really weaved an incredibly powerful thriller together and I so highly recommend!
BEST FRIENDS
By Rebecca De Winter
Out 19th July
This is a twisty thriller about friendship loss and revenge.
Evie has always been surrounded by people who should have been supporting her and keeping her safe but, for her entire life, they've always fallen so far short of this.
It's only when she reaches a new depth of rock bottom that she begins to realise exactly how badly she's been treated and that she deserves better.
Told cleverly in timeslip - I loved the glances back to the teenaged years in the 90s with all the little details that took me straight back to my own teens, right down to the shade of lipstick and choice of drink - the layers of Evie's life are built up, along with our empathy for her, as we journey through the story.
It culminates in a banger of a final few chapters as everything comes together and it is explosive reading!
This book is available to pre-order now on Kindle for the BARGAIN price of 99p

Add a dose of realism and a very clever and canny way that the author has of writing sarcastic thoughts whilst the character is saying something else mixed in with guilt, envy, jealousy, rage, sex, lies, toxic friendships and murder and you get an idea of what this book has to offer
Really loved the texting parts between the characters, has to be done good or else fails, this was done excellently
Put all together and you have a winner
Psychological mayhem at it’s best
Best Friends - that’s very doubtful! This book is for the reader that likes a good thriller where dark secrets are slowly revealed, and in snippets from the past and present the story is revealed and tension expertly raised. And the ending? Well, watch out! Thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
I really enjoyed this book and the crazy messed-up up friendship. Creepy, brooding and twisty. Perfect psychological thriller xx
