It is clear that for Harry Borden, the photographer behind "On Divorce", this collaboration with The School of Life was a personal project. It's a collection of very diverse and personal experiences of divorce, where parting of partners affected not only them, but also their children or siblings, which are also given a voice.

The foreword creates a great context to understand the subsequent, atmospheric portraits that show divorce as something that can be endured in different ways. It's obvious that the creators were very intentional on what stories will become a part of this collection in terms of representation. I truly appreciated the presence of subjects of various identities, when it comes to race, sexual orientation, gender, as well as class, which also shows how different contexts impact individuals in lieu of splitting up and what resources were available to them to cope with a difficult situation.

Great information in a simple format. Due to this being an ARC, the paragraphs were off at times so I couldn't read the complete paragraph. I really liked the true stories in the back and that it was wide variety of different experiences of going through divorce. I would recommend this to anyone considering or going through a divorce.

Divorce is not an easy and pleasant topic to discuss. On Divorce share, many couples experience going through the divorce. Some find happiness in another marriage, some stay single or with a child.
I do agree with one of the couple "Sam & Harry," We need to shed the stigma of divorce. There are hard-wired beliefs that are wrong, such as that divorce is bad for children. In fact, it's much nuanced than that. All the research shows that what can cause children (and their parents) emotional harm is exposure to entrenched conflict. That can happen in a bad divorce, but it can also happen in a deeply unhappy marriage. Divorce can be a healthy choice.

It's true that every divorce is unique and produce different lesson. Even the couple might have different perspectives on the meaning of their divorce. Couple therapy and pre-marital counseling sure can help if there are difficulties before marriage. But if divorce happens, the marriage is over but life goes on.

Pictures accompany the words of people involved in divorce in some way. The reader gets to see how divorce, a common event in modern times, has had an impact on different people who get to talk about their lived experiences. I appreciated the focus on the every-day person and the raw emotion relayed within the text, as well as the pictures putting a picture to the voice. This is a good book for one’s own reflection.

Thank you to NetGalley and The School of Life for this Arc in exchange for an honest review.
