Leona Carson turned down her boss after feeling that he was using her and wasn’t about to leave his wife like he promised. Not used to being rejected Steve takes it badly and starts a payback campaign against her. Not happy with just blackening her name he starts tormenting her and doing things like posting dog mess through her door. When trying to get an injunction against him doesn’t work Leona decides to try and play him at his own game. Thinking his friend Hugo has given him a fake alibi Leona is shocked when confronting him things aren’t quite what they seem. There is lots going on with Steve and his in-laws don’t think much of him either. Will Leona be able to get something on Steve so she can get her life back or will Steve be one step ahead of her all the time. A good read.
This is a gripping thriller that has each characters having their own secrets and motivations that add to this unpredictable story. This is a intense thriller that will keep you guessing til, the end. The author does a great job in describing the grit of the city which also adds to the story. I’ve read a lot of Evie Hunter books and each one tell great stories I will be looking forward to reading the next book
Leona Carson is being harassed by Steve Jessup because she didn’t want to give up as much as she wanted her to. He was her boss and her star was rising but now she can’t even get a call back for an interview because he has blacklisted her name and said she was on trustworthy but when she goes to his friennamy Hugo it is a game changer. I have never read a book by Evie Hunter before but I will definitely be looking for her books in the future. Her slowly plotted narrative really drew me in and I thought Leona and Hugo had a great chemistry from the beginning I also like the clever developments in her eventually going back to work for Steve with smartly done I just altogether enjoyed the book. It is a book I highly recommend and thoroughly enjoyed. I would like to thank boldWoodBooks and NetGalley for my arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Thanks to netgalley for ymthis arc. W.O.W what a book, i was hooked from the start., as i was with the authors previous books. When leona spurns her bosses advances, it turns nasty., leona has no solid evidence that it is steve doing the despicable things, after someone pushes something nasty through the letterbox. Steve has an alibi...... in hugo an old university friend, as leona and hugo join forces to take steve down. Steve takes a hit out on his wife stella, will she survive?? Can leona and hugo get the evidence they need? Highley recommend, lots of twists and turns
From the moment I delved into the story, I found myself utterly captivated, eager to uncover the twists and turns that lay ahead. Leona Carson, our protagonist, immediately struck me as a likeable character, blending vulnerability with a strong and determined spirit. Little did she know that her boss, Steve Jessop, possessed a manipulative charm that allowed him to acquire whatever he desired, regardless of the consequences.
When Leona musters the courage to stand up to him, she quickly realizes that Steve won't take rejection lightly. He's unaccustomed to not having his way, and he's proven to exert power over other women before. However, Leona is resolute in her determination not to let him destroy her life. Seeking justice, she turns to the police, only to find that Steve seems to be one step ahead, always slipping through their grasp.
In a surprising turn of events, Leona finds an unlikely ally in Steve's friend, Hugo Rossiter, who offers her the support and help she so desperately needs. The pace of the story is perfectly balanced, keeping me engaged and thoroughly immersed in the unfolding events. I relished every moment of this gripping tale and found myself completely absorbed in its pages.
Prepare to be hooked by this compelling narrative of resilience, betrayal, and the strength to fight back against those who seek to control.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #BoldwoodBooks for the read/review of #TheAlibi by #EvieHunter. I really enjoyed this book with the cat and mouse games and the deceit. I would recommend this book.
I’d like to thank Boldwood Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Alibi’ written by Evie Hunter in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Leona Carson was dating her boss Scott Jessop but stopped when she realised he was married but his ego wouldn’t accept being turned down so he blackened her character and made life difficult for her. Leona approached the police to get a restraining order against him but it was refused as she had no evidence and it was his word against hers especially as he arranged for an alibi proving that it couldn’t have been him who’d put dog’s mess through her letterbox. Leona’s determined to put a stop to this devious and dangerous man and contacts people who know Jessop including his old university friend and business acquaintance Hugo Rossiter.
‘The Alibi’ is a story of a womanising man and his lies and deceit and while it isn’t an edge-of-the-seat thriller it’s still a page-turner especially the first half of the book that kept me reading long after I should have stopped. There’s no major excitement or unexpected surprises but it’s a story with a solid plot, characters that are interestingly described and a few twists and turns. The chapters flow nicely making it an easy and intriguing read and finish with an ending that rounds off the story nicely.
Thank you to #NetGalley, Boldwood Books and Evie Hunter for the opportunity to read an advance copy of THE ALIBI, to be published 13 July 2023. A man who is a narcissist-and mysogenist is the character to hate in this suspenseful thriller. It revolves around corporate business and relationships in and outside of the business.. A woman who is thwarted through misgivings of the narcissist decides to return to work for him so she can pay him back for his serious misdeeds to her and others. 5/5 Stars. #NetGalley. #BoldwoodBooks. #EvieHunter. #TheAlibi
I was hooked from the first page and intrigued to find out how the story would develop. I thought that Leona Carson was a likeable character who, although vulnerable, had a strong, determined side to her. She finds that boss Steve Jessop is a man who, using his charm, gets what he wants and this comes at any cost. When Leona stands up to him he makes things difficult. He isn’t used to not getting his own way and being turned down. He has done this before to other women but Leona is determined to not let him get away with trying to ruin her life. Leona goes to the police but Steve always appears to be one step ahead. She finds help and support from an unlikely source - his friend Hugo Rossiter. I thought that the pace of this was spot on and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review
Another fantastic read from Evie Hunter I couldn't put this book down it was absolutely brilliant . Just love the twists and turns in this book . Would highly recommend this book.
I loved it, 5* classic and one of if not the best books she has written, it had everything and the storyline was brilliant as well
The pace could've used some work - all the action took place in the second half while the first half dragged on. Overall it was a good read with a new premise. I would love to see more of Leona and her past though.
This is a reasonably paced novel perfect for that Summer, or holiday read.
Story is a little different, good different to other books in this genre. The story starts slower and builds up and is a real cocktail of deceit, manipulation, revenge with domestic violence.
Character wise, I thought good detail was used and meant you liked and disliked certain characters as per the story.
The Alibi by Evie Hunter
Characters: 4/5
Plot: 4/5
Pace: 3/5
Thrill/Mystery 3/5
Overall: 4/5
I was torn as I have never read anything from this author before and the blurb sounded awesome and full of revenge and deceit. However, when I started reading I found the pace to be pretty slow and it took me much longer to get through the chapters than it normally takes me. I also felt the ending was rushed. Just as it picked up speed it really went to fast and the author added much more than needed as far as the abuse goes. This is definitely a domestic thriller that is full of lies, deceit, manipulation and revenge.
Thank you to NetGalley as well as the author and publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.
This book had all the great things I like in my writers. Lies and murder. Kept me engrossed for a while couldn't put the book down. Great writer
Overall an enjoyable read as the storyline was a little different to the norm.
Sadly towards the end i found myself skimming through as i just lost interest.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
This is an easy read, perfect for summer reading, about revenge and domestic violence. It's slow paced at first but builds up towards the end. I liked the plot and the characterisation, however, it all wrapped up too neatly and quickly, leaving me with some unanswered questions. Perhaps there will be a follow up and we can find out more about Steve's wife and Leona. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC
It is an interesting story about lies, murder and mystery, It is colorful and captivating, the plot is interesting and imaginative. Love the the story and the intrigue had me hooked on page one and kept me engrossed till the very end.
When Leona Carson rejects the advances of her boss, Steve Jessop, the businessman won't take no for an answer and begins a campaign of smearing and harassment and the ineffectiveness of the police forces Leona has to take matters into her own hands.
The pace of the novel has been a little slow as we get to know the characters that although interesting, I have not come to convey their full potential. The plot, although interesting, didn't move me at all, perhaps because of the calmness of the narration. The book picks up the pace in the last part which is practically where all the action takes place.
That said, The Alibi is the ideal book to relax without expecting big shocks in the plot, it entertains but it is not the best of Evie Hunter.
A pacy domestic read about revenge that I did enjoy reading, the author has a brilliant way of describing people's true characters and emotions. This was a good solid read,if you've not read any of the authors books I would recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC.
