How precious it should be to hold this book in my hands. The illustrations are magnificent, the arrangement of the text on the pages, the typography, the way of presenting the topics, the line that follows...

It is an excellent book to enter the world of these beings that so captivate us (that's why there are so many books, series, movies, plays).

What I liked the most is being able to learn about the representation of vampires in different countries and how it originates. I did not know even 5% of all of them, nor of everything that this book told me.

The truth is that it is a book to hold in your hands, look at thousands of times and always find something interesting.

Thanks Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions for the ARC I read through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Secrets of the Vampire is a mesmerizing compendium that effortlessly blends history, folklore, and pop culture references to offer an enchanting exploration of the vampire phenomenon. Written by Julie Légère and Elsa Whyte, this book is not only a delightful read for children aged 9-14 (the target audience) but also a book that can be enjoyed by adults as well.

One of the standout features of this book is its unique narrative voice, which cleverly adopts the perspective of a vampire as the narrator. This adds an intriguing layer to the storytelling and enhances the overall immersive experience.

The illustrations in Secrets of the Vampire are amazing. They effortlessly bring the vampire world to life, enhancing the reading experience. Laura Perez, the illustrator, does a fantastic job. The book is truly a feast for the eyes, which means a lot of readers will buy it just because it's pretty on the inside. It's unfortunate, though, that the cover doesn't stand out the same way the illustrations do.

I appreciate that the book covers vampire myths from different regions, not just Europe. It also delves into the fascinating world of vampire tropes and their representation in various cultures, including their intersection with religious beliefs. Including pop culture references, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, and Dracula, adds a contemporary touch that will resonate with fans of modern vampire literature and media. However, here we come across the book's second major flaw (the first being the cover); these pop culture references are all American or European. If the authors did take the time to write this book, they could have talked about pop culture in different parts of the world and introduced readers to that.

Long story short: this is the perfect gift for all the vampire lovers you know, regardless of how old they are!

I loved this! People who know everything about vampires or people who know nothing will enjoy this read! It showcases information on vampires from various locations and the history behind the mythology and legends. The book ends with modern popular culture references like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Edward Cullen. The illustration was fabulous and enhanced the sourcebook!

Thank you for Netgalley and the publisher for and ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this, its the perfect amount of information about vampires without overwhelming the reader.
I liked that it went through the ages, historical figures, books and movies.
The part about Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythology was fascinating, and the part about vampires around the world in folktales was very interesting and how blood suckers and monsters were existing already even if they didn't call them “vampires”. This part was actually short for me, I would have love to read more about them.
It was also nice how the werewolves and demons were mentioned too, along with Dracula of course, Elizabeth Báthory and others.

I think this is a useful book full with gorgeous illustration throughout to get to know more about the vampires without info-dump.

Such a fun read if you like vampires!
Written by a vampire who tells the story of her people, it's interesting to read.
I did find a spelling mistake, pray instead of prey.

Secrets of the Vampire is a beautifully illustrated book which touches upon the history of vampires throughout the centuries and how they are perceived in different parts of the world.

This is a quick enjoyable read but it left me wanting more!

Some aspects of the book were short paragraphs so if more information was provided then it would have been even better.

I love that it mentioned vampires within popular culture from literature to movies and how over the years the nature and appearance of this undead creature has evolved.

Thank you to Netgalley for my arc.

I loved everything about this book, and will absolutely be adding it to my library's collection. This is such a fun way to present the history of vampires! It is largely told in first person, and includes a lot of great quotes from relevant films and source material. The illustrations are plentiful, and a little bit spooky without being terrifying, which is perfect for youth patrons. I think this will be a really valuable text for anyone interested in vampires.

When in doubt, I always grab a nonfiction book to help me during a reading slump. Maybe, I'm weird? This cute book details the evolving myth and origins of one of our favorite mythical creatures - The Vampire - and does so brilliantly.

This book offers a thorough history of vampiric lore, accompanied with moody, gorgeous art.

Secrets of the Vampire (Supernatural Sourcebook)

"Just like you invented the devil, it is you who created us, and in telling our story, I'll also be telling yours."

From this quote right here, I just knew I was going to enjoy reading this. And I was completely right. This was great, I have always been fascinated by vampire lore, and this was a good introduction into the myths and legends. The illustrations were absolutely beautiful. Each chapter was very informative and interesting, this book is divided by time periods and themes. I had no idea vampires were in other mythologies and folktales outside of Europe. Reading about the Japanese Nukekubi or the Chinese Jiangshi, for example, was super intriguing the premise of a blood-sucking demon prevails throughout the different cultures and it’s something humans fear that goes bump in the night. I was always under the impression that vampires were just a part of Eastern European folklore…I learned so much from reading this book! I will definitely be branching out for more informative vamp books, this book has just been the beginning for me.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy of the book for an honest review!

"What good are your magnificent funerals in the face of the despair of the one you have abandoned and forgotten as soon as the appearance of life left his body, and who will come to in the depths of his coffins to die there for real?"-Maximilien Baufmann, On the appearance of death and on nasty burial (1851)

I decided to read last night while I was waiting in a queue to leave the Muse concert at Milton Keynes. Which I found very fitting as two of their songs were in the Twilight films- 'Supermassive Black Hole' in Twilight and 'Neutron Star Collison' in Eclipse. Within the book there is a section about how vampires are portrayed within film and television and Twilight was mentioned.

This is a book perfect for Vampire lovers, the book is told through the point of view of a vampire and talks about folklores and where vampires began. As I haven't looked into the folklores and the different forms of vampires before, I didn't realise how many varies their were. I love the illustrations and they pair the book beautifully.

Thank you Netgalley for a copy of the book for an honest review.

A beautifully illustrated book on the history of vampires with a twist of the voice telling hinting at being a vampire in their own right.
Whilst it seems the target audience for this book is teens, as someone whose long been hooked on vampire lore (one can blame Anne Rice and L.J Smith in the late 90s) I really enjoyed reading through this, and even learnt some new things about international lore, and will definitely be re-reading in the near future as the illustrations are truly beautifully done, that even re-learning is a beautiful experience.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto for the ARC, I will be sure to grab a physical copy for my ever bursting book shelf as well!
