Meatball’s Mixed-Up Moods
by Cathy Longano
Pub Date 12/24/22
Meatball, the Pug, invites his friend, Rocco, over to play but his Mother says he must clean his room before that can happen. Meatball gets mad, but makes the right choice and feels better.
When Rocco comes to play Meatball doesn’t want him to play with his rope toy and this leads to an argument and bad feelings. Meatball ends up apologizing to Rocco and all is well.
A cute book exploring feelings and how to handle them.
Thank you @netgalley and Cathy Longano for an electronic book ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) in exchange for an honest review.

I thought that this book was really good - the story is simple but told well and it gets the point across.
My daughter is 5 and this is definitely similar to the stories we have been told in our house about people falling out at school and then being friends the next day having said sorry and made up, and then carried on as if nothing happened
I liked the emphasis on saying sorry and it isn’t a weak or bad thing to do so or admit that you didn’t act as you should have done at the time and have since thought back on your actions too – it’s a positive book with that message which clearly comes over.
The illustrations were cute as well and worked well with the story.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!
Who can resist a sweet little puppy? Especially an adorable, fun-loving pug named “Meatball”? This lively little pup draws young readers into a look at some healthy ways to untangle and handle different moods and emotions in Cathy Longano’s children’s fiction book, Meatball’s Mixed-Up Moods.
Meatball is excited about a play date with his best friend Rocco, the dog from next door. But first, mom says Meatball needs to clean his room. Meatball is less than thrilled. After all, he just wants to play with Rocco and have fun! Cleaning his room has Meatball feeling frustrated. But he cleans up his room anyway and feels happy with his efforts.
When Rocco comes over to play later, all goes well until Rocco grabs one of Meatball’s favorite toys. Meatball responds with, “It’s mine!” Rocco asks if they can share. Meatball is still less than thrilled. He becomes angry.
Later, Meatball sorts through a kaleidoscope of emotions including sadness, loneliness and confusion. But Mom is there and gently explains about sharing and treating others with kindness and respect. Meatball also learns about empathy, apologies, and forgiveness. And zoomies, too!
This is such a cute story! Meatball’s Mixed-Up Moods teaches little ones valuable lessons about sharing with others, paying attention to parents, and being responsible about cleaning up after yourself. Also learning to share with your friends and being kind. The text is brief enough to engage little ones without over-taxing young attention spans.
The illustrations are just adorable. Meatball waking up in his jammies is too cute! So is Meatball meeting his buddy Rocco at the door to play. Young readers and others who love dogs, kids, and gentle lessons about dealing with “mixed up moods” in a positive and healthy manner will enjoy Meatball’s Mixed Up Moods. It would make a great bedtime story or read-aloud.
