A paranormal with a fun premise but the writing style was a tad repetitive for me. Dinah was also struggling with mummy issues and drug addiction which in general are not my favourite in books.

Dinah nineteen year's old is sent to prison for a murder she didn't commit, if that isn't devastating enough try being a vampire in prison. Dinah is transferred to a minimum-security facility after several years and meets a lawyer who is trying to get her released, because if she stays in prison they will notice that she isn't ageing. Dinah is released, and reunites with the love of her life Rachel they both get a second chance to be together, but will they have a chance to live it when gruesome murders keeps happening around Dinah. They team up with Dinah's parole officer M J to find the truth. I enjoyed this book. Just Imagine if there really were vampires in the world that would really be something to see. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family and I look forward to what's next from this author

I am not sure what I just read......but it was weird.
It was so weird I kept reading because I thought it had to get better and make sense. But it only got more bazaar and very repetitive.
It's about two 19 year old lesbian street kids that get turned into vampires. They kill a cop and one of them gets sent to prison. The book starts after she has been in prison 24 years. That part was very confusing to me, since when do vampires get put in prison. 75% of the story revolves around getting her paroled. (That's the repetitive part) The last two chapters get a little exciting, which was a surprise.
I really should have stopped reading at about 25%. Not my kind of story.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

have to say i was a bit disappointed with this vampire storyline...

a vampire in prison and lets not even get into how she survived those years without drinking from other prisoners.....

but someone is trying to frame her for murder after she gets her parole ....

a very strange book...

This is story about a vampire, Dinah, who killed a cop and was sent to prison. While on parole in a Halfway house, several other women there are murdered. Her girlfriend Rachel, was with her when the cop was killed, but Dinah took all the blame. Rachel goes on to led a productive life and is always trying to help Dinah.

Dinah is also a recovery drug addict and loves playing RPG games.

I was bored with this story with the constant writing about Dinah craving her drugs. And her hatred of her mother who’s trying to make amends. And her questioning Rachel’s intentions.

The storyline was good but the constant repetition made me speed read to get to the end of the book.

Read other reviews, this book was not for me.

A vampire in prison? How does that even happen, when the vampire is new.y turned and being set up.
Dinah’s done her time and now she’s out and just like that the killings start again. Suspected of these murders she seeks help for her old girlfriend and the two will find some answers and maybe find each other.
interesting story and characters.

I think for me what didn't work was the vampire character being an addict in denial, who loves tabletop gaming D&D style. I'm personally just not interested in either of those topics, and it would have been good to have those included in the blurb to let readers know what they were getting into.

Religion also gets brought up a lot, and I felt that was awkward given the history of both characters.

I felt the 'mystery' about the murders surrounding the MC to be too obvious and her entire situation overall left me with far too many questions, the timing etc, and then was somewhat easily dealt with in terms of the vampire lores of convenience that were utilized here.

Just wasn't for me, but it may be this funk I'm in - so I encourage everyone to try it for themselves of course.

Imagine if there really were preternatural creatures in the world that'll be something to see but then again the way this world is being different is hated instead of being celebrated.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

In A Second Chance at Life, I spent a few hours caught up in the fun and mystery of a fantasy world and second chance romance.

At 19, Dinah Pelletier was put behind bars for murder. A life sentence would have been hard enough but for a vampire; devastatingly so. When she found herself up for parole, her past and the one person she had avoided for more than 2 decades reappears and she has a second chance at life and love.

I enjoyed the blend of humour, fight and growing up pains while Dinah reemerges into present day society. Dinah the young vampire is one of its kind, a geek at heart, she is compassionate and has high morals but with her newfound freedom, she has to find her feet, learn forgiveness and it’s particularly sweet that her first love is also the one who waited and ended up being her everlasting love.

I just reviewed A Second Chance at Life by Genevieve McCluer. Thank you NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC.

Genevieve McCluer is a gifted author. “A Second Chance at Life” shows her ability to craft compelling characters.

Dinah, after a rough start in her youth, both she and Rachel find true love at an early age. However, an unfortunate incident occurs when both she and Rachel are turned into vampires. And they are separated over a tragic event.

The story starts with Dinah being in prison and being transferred to a minimum-security facility. There she meets an attorney who is a fae. The goal is to have Dinah released from prison since preternatural creatures prefer to stay hidden from humans. And Dinah would never age, and that would raise questions in the prison.
Rachel works with the fae attorney to arrange Dinah’s release. As Rachel has never gotten over Dinah, she hopes to have a life with Dinah. While Dinah’s release does occur, during that time a series of gruesome murders of humans by a vampire start to appear near Dinah.

Dinah and Rachel become entangled in finding out who is trying to frame Dinah and rush to find a way to stop the killings. Dinah’s parole officer, MJ, becomes an ally in the race to find the killer.

I enjoyed the book. The writer view on a newly turned vampire and the insecurity of her powers took a while for me to understand. I found myself having to set aside my thoughts on vampires and how someone so young, and newly turned, might still be unsure their power. The theme of low self-esteem fits with the background of Dinah, but at the same time, I found it hard to imagine a vampire would be so unsure, especially once she was introduced to other preternatural creatures.

The supporting characters are wonderful. I do like the book, because it reminds me that we all have times when we don’t recognize the power that lies within us. So I would highly recommend “A Second Change at Life.”
