Dougie Marshall wants to talk with Marie Evens. When she meets him he looks awful. He is working as a police advisor for a film company, and after two weeks working, he thinks there is a serious crime going on. He has been warned by accidents and threatening calls late at night. The same company has now come to Saltern-le-Fen, and he has left. They have hired a new consultant, Frank Rosen, an old mate of Jackman.

Soon, the police find a gorgeous naked man by a lake and then another one the next day. Meanwhile, Jackman and Evans realize that Alistair Ashcroft is involved in the current case. He was previously arrested for murder and incarcerated for life. He had a serious psychological problem, and was a brutal murderer - a very difficult previous case for Jackman and Evans. He was now in a special prison unit which is far more comfortable than the usual jail. The reader soon realizes that Ashcroft is also managing a lot of crime while still in jail. Besides secret porn films, he has ordered more killings and arranged some snuff films as well.

There is a lot of suspense and excitement, as members of the police receive threats to themselves and their loved ones, and the dead bodies appear, but finally, everything comes together.

I thank Joffe Books and Netgalley for the ARC. The opinions are my own.

The River's Edge by Joy Ellis is the tenth book in the brilliant Jackman & Evans series and this series has been excellent from the very first book, This is a series that will just have you gripped from the very first few pages and then you will want to learn and hear more about the main characters.
The little village of Saltern-le-Fen is usually peaceful but now it is buzzing with excitement when a film crew are arriving to shoot a new TV Police drame, Fen Division Five. Everyone around is excited of this, but, Detective Jackman receives a disturbing tip-off that something is wrong and he can not rest until he looks into it. .

Detective Marie Evans is looking forward to moving into her dream home. However, here’s no time to celebrate or too unpack!.
A naked body of a young man is found at the river’s edge, He’s been strangled, his skin massaged in expensive oil.

Then, two days later, another handsome young man is discovered in a shallow lake. His throat cut. He too is lathered in body oil.

Who is doing this? Have they got a serial killer in this was peaceful village?

In the shadows, an arch enemy from the past emerges. He is a master manipulator who has his sights on Jackman and Evans. Alistair “Stephen” Ashcroft, is sitting from behind the bars of his high security prison, and he’s putting the finishing touches to a devastating revenge plan.

As they hunt a brutal killer, Jackman and Evans are themselves hunted in a deadly game of cat and mouse – and the stakes could not be higher.

WoW this is a series of gruesome murders on the Lincolnshire fens. A deadly game of cat and mouse.

Who will survive?

I highly recommend this series. The River's Edge is one of the best book within this series and it will have you sitting on the edge of your seat!

Big thank you to Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of this book.

Another brilliant addition to this excellent series as we again join Jackman and Evans in the Fens.
A great tale that will have you shouting at the pages. Such a cleverly evil plot it keeps you guessing and it feels like this time Ashcroft, despite being locked up for life, will again ruin their live’s and those that they hold dear, or will he? Will evil out or might he be about to finally meet his nemesis?
Whatever the outcome it's always a pleasure to be back in the Fens with these wonderful characters that are so familiar they feel like friends.

Joy Ellis’s books are always a delight to read and this book was no exception and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jackman and Evans and their team were at their best and the storyline kept you guessing right till the end. I can’t recommend this book enough and you should enjoy your trip to The Fens.

Immersive, Pacy..
The tenth entry in the Jackman and Evans series of mysteries and a bizarre series of gruesome murders is about to be unleashed. Whilst the detectives themselves are dealing with their own personal lives and issues and the local villagers concerned more with the television series being filmed, a killer is making their mark. Another immersive instalment with a compelling and pacy plot populated with a credible and interesting cast of characters.

Could this be the end of DI Jackman and DS Evans? Their nemesis is locked up never to be freed, so why do they still feel threatened? How can he still be pulling strings on their patch? It seems he means to be the death of them, their team and others who’ve offended him.

Loved it - is it the last in the series?

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher I read a free advance review copy of the book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.

It's a good, entertaining mystery tale, fairly well written and with a cast of enjoyable characters that kept me immersed and longing to find clues and tells that led me to the answer. Although some of the twists were quite obvious, it was a gratifying read in the sense that it delivers what it promises and brought me the entertainment I was craving. Seeing I haven't read the previous books I did get mighty curious about Ashcroft and his past, so I might have to dig in for the previous tales on this series.

My thanks to Joffe Books, Joy Ellis and Netgalley.
You know, I just love Jackman and Evans. I love the chemistry between them. And, I especially love how they are friends, colleagues and just perfect partners.
I adore characters that are deep into each other's lives without it being sexualized or any of that b.s. that can creep in.
This was not one of my favorites from Ms. Ellis.
But, that's o.k., because after the last J&E book, I too was a bit drained.
Best thing about this book is that a story that I'm damn tired of is at an end. I do love when bad guy's are murdered! It just seems fitting!

crime-thriller, suspense, fiction, unputdownable, family, family-dynamics, grief, grieving, law-enforcement, undercover, gambling-addiction, revenge, relationships, relatives, prison, monster, out-of-retirement, conspiracy, working-partners, psychopath, psychologist, tense, procedural, British*****

The suspense keeps ratcheting up and the tension coils almost to the breaking point in this complex case of murder, a psychopathic life prisoner's desire for revenge, and a lot of backstory which is well covered within the tale. Riveting!
I requested and received an EARC from Joffe Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

When two naked young men are found murdered the investigation lead to many different crimes in which DI Jackman and DS Evans are not initially aware of who is behind them then as crimes and threats get darker it proves that the whole of their team are in imminent danger.
This is a page turner by Joy Ellis well written and keeping you on the edge of your seat until the end. A great book in the Jackman & Evans series.

This is the 10th novel featuring DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans. Set on the Lincolnshire Fens, Marie gets a tip off from a former colleague that something is not quite right with the new film crew in town that is shooting a new police drama. Soon a body of a man is found at the river's edge and he is covered in expensive body oil. Two days later a second body is found, also covered in the expensive oil. Jackman and Marie are busy hunting down the killer and trying to identify the bodies as well as the suspect film crew. Just what is going on there?! Many mysteries in this gripping thriller. A cracking read with great characters.

Another brilliant book in the Jackman and Evans series. Complex and dark this just kept me guessing. These books are very atmospheric and get better and better. It is not a stand alone book. It would be best to read the others in the series. Couldn’t put it down .

This is a great read which finishes the story of Ashcroft, the nemesis of the police characters in this series. Always well written, with a great plot and believable characters, this series is fabulous for those, like me, who enjoy character led police procedurals. Little plot hole at the end as to the part the priest had played, but there is a hint that he may reoccur in future novels.

The River’s Edge is the 10th in the Jackman and Evans series. Ellis has devised a convoluted plot that demanded the reader stay alert. Jackman and Evans are investigating a strangled body found in the water, a body that Rory Wilkinson names Adonis for his good looks. Meanwhile, Marie has been contacted by an old colleague who reports something suspicious going on at a filming set, but he can’t say what other than that he had a bad vibe. Oh, and Alistair “Stephen” Ashcroft, who they put away in prison, is still pulling the strings from inside and planning a major event. The book rolled along quickly as the story alternated between the different storylines. Told in the third person omniscient style, the reader gets a bird’s eye view of everything going on.
Ellis’s strength is in creating realistic characters and scenes that are easy to envision.
As much as I adore Jackman, Evans and their team, this book’s ending fell flat for me. Maybe because there was a major hole in the plot. <spoiler> While I liked that outsiders were helping them, I refused to believe that the background checks of those allowed into Ashcroft’s unit wouldn’t have picked up the connections to the victims, especially after Theo’s repeated comments about how everyone had been vetted so well. </spoiler>
My thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of this book.

Jackman and Marie sure have their hands full in this latest installment. There’s a film crew in town that might be up to more than just making a hit TV show. While looking into their actions, the bodies of naked young men start washing up in the rivers. On top of that, their arch-nemesis is hard at work plotting for the ultimate revenge. All of this while Jackman is still grieving his partner, Laura, who passed away a few months ago. He’s already close to the breaking point and the combined stress of handling these multiple investigations might just push him over the edge.

I enjoyed learning about the desert-like Dungeness, in Kent, England. The descriptions were so vivid that I had to stop reading and look the location up on Google to see for myself. This author is great at incorporating real areas into her stories. As someone who lives in the States, it helps me visualize what the land is like over there.

But back to the story - there are many different sub-plots occurring at the same time and only the readers can see the (mostly) whole picture. That doesn’t mean you’ll have it figured out early on, if ever because you won’t! With so many layers to these mysteries, you’ll wonder how they’ll possibly untangle and solve all these crimes. You’ll have to read the story to find out and you will not be disappointed!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of The River’s Edge, the tenth novel to feature DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans of Lincolnshire Police, set in the fictional town of Saltern-le-Fen.

There is a film crew in the Fens filming a police series when Jackman and Evans get a tip that there is more going on. They are starting to look into it when the body of an unidentified young man is found murdered in the water. Then another body is found that can be linked to the first one and that gets them dreading what might come next. At the same time an old enemy is moving against them to execute revenge.

I thoroughly enjoyed The River’s Edge, which is an action packed read with plenty of twists and turns and an amazing ending- that final twist is a masterclass in misdirection.

The novel is told from various points of view so all the angles are covered and the reader has a rough idea of who is behind what, but that’s just the start. The devil is in the detail and that’s missing, like what is going on at the film set and what revenge is planned. It’s clever the way the author gives plenty of background, but not enough to sate the reader’s curiosity and thus turns the novel into a real page turner. I must admit that I found it less than totally engrossing at the beginning with so much going on and so many changes of perspective. It was difficult to keep my concentration and track. Still, it soon picks up and becomes an absorbing read with thrills, spills tension and twists.

I might be harping on, but the author has surpassed herself with the conclusion to the novel. I would never have guessed what she had planned and was gobsmacked by events. It’s so good it deserves to be highlighted.

Jackman and Evans are firm favourites with me, so it is nice to see happiness for her. Jackman, on the other hand, is still grieving and can be a bit of a wet blanket at times, just as well Marie is there to buck him up.

The River’s Edge is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Another riveting book in the bestselling Jackman and Evans series by Joy Ellis. I knew I was in for an adrenaline pumping read and I was right.

Jackman and Sam are struggling with bereavement while Marie is moving on in her relationship with Ralph so it was to be expected that this book would be emotional in parts. However, only a very small and relevant part that fit in with the story.

It begins with the discovery of a body that of a fit, attractive young man that has even Rory feeling saddened at the unnecessary loss of life. Who is this young man? Why has nobody missed him? The team are struggling to identify him.

In the meantime Marie is contacted by an old colleague, Dougie he has been advising on the set of a film about Policing on the Fens and felt there was a crime being committed but has no idea what that crime may be. Whatever it is Dougie feels his life is in danger.

As the team try to identify the body and track down his murderer Marie and Jackman are curious about what is going on during the filming and are busy making enquiries under the radar. The last thing anyone is expecting is for a nemesis from their past to rear its ugly head and send everyone's lives spiralling out of control.

What a story! Absolutely and totally gripping I was reading well into the night even as my vision was blurry and my eyelids closing. Then re-reading the following day to ensure I missed nothing. Page after page, chapter after chapter of adrenaline pumping suspense all the way through. The ending is absolutely mind-blowing. A massive curve ball and definitely one I wasn't expecting.

This is one brilliant book I love all Joys book but this one I feel is way 'up there' among the very best I have ever read. She has used the personalities of the characters we know and love and fit them into an absolutely phenomenal story. I love the addition of Julia she brings a new, unique character to the series that works perfectly.

Definitely a 5 star read - absolutely love this so much I will be reading it again which is something I rarely do.

Such a great read, I loved it and devoured it in one sitting. I really enjoy the characters in this series every time I start a new book it’s like visiting with old friends. I’m a big Joy Ellis fan and this did not disappoint, in fact each book gets better as the characters grow. Would recommend this book, in fact I’m going to buy a couple of copies as gifts.
