Knowing next to nothing about blacksmithing but being very interested about it, this book's perfect for a beginner. It will give you the main informations you need to start this craft — or simply learn about it — with the supplies, the tools, the techniques that make the craft of blacksmithing.
The book also gives you some nice tutorials, but sadly apart if you have access to a forge and materials, blacksmithing is not the kind of craft you can take up as a cheaply hobby.
This is a very useful title for learning the art of blacksmithing. You will be shown the supplies you will need, along with recommendations from experts of the trade to accomplish specialist metalworking techniques. I especially appreciated the practicality associated with this title, because it focuses on projects you can learn to make that will benefit a homestead, such as shovels, railing and wrenches.
A valuable resource for any library.
Blacksmithing: A Guide to Practical Metalworking, Tools and Techniques

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this digital ebook ARC of Blacksmithing by Danielle Johnson and publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Skilled artisans at the heart of human civilization since the Iron Age, blacksmiths gained the respect of their communities through the utility of their creations, whether these were weapons, armour, farming tools, wagon axles or household items. Industrialization and mass production may have led to the disappearance of the blacksmith from everyday life, but the art of metalworking is alive and well. Today, blacksmithing is still practised throughout the world and is experiencing a revival. Blacksmithing provides a photographic introduction to blacksmith practices today, offering the novice and enthusiast an insight into this ancient trade. Learn how blacksmiths heat the metal using a variety of methods, including electric induction and traditional coal-fired forges; see the huge range of items that a metalworker can produce, including wrenches, shovels, door plates, bicycle stands and railings; see craftspeople practicing specialist metalworking techniques, such as upsetting, collaring, twisting, fullering and swaging; and understand how blacksmiths respect the environment by using old iron ore and scrap iron. Illustrated with 180 photographs that will inspire and delight, Blacksmithing is a dazzling pictorial celebration of a craft as old as civilization itself.
This book is beautiful hardcover handbook with great illustrations. It is a great introduction about blacksmithing with lots of good information. It also has 7 complete tutorial projects.
I give this book 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I would highly recommend to anyone interested in wanting to learn blacksmith or anyone who wants to try out the projects.

An interesting collection about Blacksmithing. Good information, interesting for those wanting to start a new hobby.
I really enjoyed the beautifully artistic introduction to the practical art of metalwork in "Blacksmithing: A Guide to Practical Metalworking, Tools, and Techniques" by Daniel Johnson. I choose to read this book simply because blacksmithing seems interesting and romantic. (Maybe I have watched too many Westerns?) Although the target of the book is a novice blacksmith looking for practical advice, this book seriously appealed to me as a total outsider. The photography is stunning and it is fascinating to learn about the physics, techniques, and tools used to make many of the solid metal objects we use in daily life which can be forged by a blacksmith.
I was enthralled with the projects section which described in great detail how to actually make various items including practical blacksmithing tool like tongs, general tools like knives (I had no idea how intricate the handle would be!), and even a highly artistic brass rose.
I recommend this to blacksmiths and blacksmith-wannabes of all kinds!
I thank the publisher and author for kindly providing a temporary electronic review copy of this work.
This is a superb handbook and introduction to blacksmithing (A guide to practical metalworking, tools and techniques) which is well laid out and full of pictures to illustrate techniques. The cover is wonderful and is what drew me in to reading it. There a seven projects to aspire to and a thorough guide to what you need to have, know and do to create a productive workshop. Thank you to Net Galley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Blacksmithing is an ancient craft dating back to the 6th century BCE. It is a historical practice which makes me feel very connected to our ancestors. It is absolutely fascinating. The forged rose made in this book is beautiful! 🌹
Blacksmithing is filled with all kind of tips, techniques, and information.I was very impressed and fascinated by it. I have always wanted to know more about the art/livelihood that is still used today and yet almost sounds like something list to an era. However, the art-form is still in use today and yes to me it is art. What can be wrought in flames is timeless, beautiful m, useful and enduring. This book is definitely a great read fir anyone interested in learning more about it.
Another fascinating book by Amber Books full of gorgeous pictures. love it and learned something about blacksmithing

Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Blacksmithing: A Guide to Practical Metalworking, Tools, and Techniques is a well written and accessible tutorial guide to smithy by Daniel Johnson. Due out 10th Oct 2023 from Amber Books, it's 224 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
This is a solid reference and tutorial guide for beginning and intermediate smiths & crafters which does a good job of covering the tools, supplies, workshop setup, safety, and other features necessary for safe and successful blacksmithing. The author is clearly experienced at his craft and does a good job of making that info accessible to others.
In fact, the book is arranged in a course format. Safety, equipment, basic info, technique and background are covered in the first half of the book, with 7 complete tutorial projects each in their own chapter after. The book is very well photographed throughout, in colour, and arranged well enough that "action" shots aren't obstructed by tools or hands.
The tutorials are written simply and clearly. Tools and supplies are listed in a bullet list sidebar, followed by step-by-step instructions. Measurements are provided in both metric and imperial (American) units. All the tutorials are accompanied by numerous colour photos. It -would- be possible for a keen beginner to use this book as a primary resource to gather the necessary tools and supplies and learn the basics of blacksmithy from the tutorials it contains. It's always easier (and less costly) to learn from someone who knows what they're doing, but this is a valuable resource and could serve as primary instruction, if necessary. There is no index or resources/vendors list included in the text. The photos do have an attributions credit index.
Five stars. Highly recommended to home hobbyists, crafters, recreationists/SCAdians, self-sufficiency folks, library acquisitions, etc. Makers groups will also find this a valuable addition. There's an honesty and directness in the non-stock photos; the hands and arms of the author/instructor bear the scars of his experience.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I loved this book so much. First it was very diverse which was really cool. If I was completely honest I picked this book up just because of the pictures, which were beautiful. I loved them. What I didn't expect was to see so many patterns and cool information. I couldn't try any of the patterns, but the information was detailed.
5 stars
Daniel Johnson's Blacksmithing is a solid resource. It covers all of the basics of setting up a (very expensive, very well-equipped) shop and provides a thorough introduction to blacksmithing. A majority of the included projects could certainly be made in a much simpler "backyard" set-up, but the photographs and accompanying text give the enthusiast something to aspire to.
What makes this book stand out is the abundance of full-color photos. They clearly show the different steps involved and are ideal for showing what color(s) the metal takes on when it's at the proper working temperature for different applications.
This is an excellent general resource that I would not hesitate to purchase or recommend.
My knowledge about blacksmithing is very poor. I requested the book out of curiosity and I think is very clear and with understable steps. One day I'll like to try some of the things that explained cause I think that blacksmithing is very useful and interesting.
