DNF @ 56%. I've enjoyed Timothy Janovsky in the past but I've also DNFed his books before, and unfortunately I just can't push through with this one. The start was way too long and dull, and I'm zoning out listening to the rest because I'm not invested in the story so might as well give up.
Sadly a DNF, I really wanted to enjoy it as all the reviews have been such raves but having started it about 3 times I just didn’t get into it.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
This book took me ages to finish as I started reading it, put it down, then didn't have the desire to find out what happened next. When I did return, I ended up having a fine time with it but this wasn't for me
I found the main character Nolan to be deeply unpleasant and a bit whiny. He behaved badly but was full of self pity and offered half arsed apologies. Even after he should have experienced some character growth, he was still pretty unlikeable. This was a shame because if he was in any way a sympathetic character, this would have been a really fun read
Nolan also was a really bad comedian, I felt embarrassed for a fictional character
I really liked the sound of his sister's workplace and think I'd have loved the book her colleague wrote.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my copy of this e-arc.
This was something a bit different for me and I didn’t fully connect with the book but overall I did still enjoy it and would recommend it on.
I dont think thos author is for me and that's fine, I totally understand why people would love this it just unfortunately fell flat for me personally and I dont think I'll be giving another chance because that's two books I've disliked
It took me a while to really click with this story tbh. It has a great concept which I'm always a sucker for - think of it like 13 Going on 30 meets Looking. I think the main issue was that the main character, Nolan, is a bit of an ass. But it does kick up a gear when he wakes up in his alternate future and the romance with his bff Drew is really drawn out. It ends up being a sweet, sexy romcom.
New Adult is an enjoyable, engaging read ... a worthy third entry in Janovsky's Boy Meets Boy series. It had me smiling, tearing up, and longing, often at the same time. What sets Janovsky's work apart from so many M/M romance novels is the author's skill and freedom from tropes, even though he talks about tropes in the novel. Each work is different, fresh, and engaging in its own right. I enjoyed New Adult immensely. Janovsky's writing is clever and assured; I had a hard time putting the book down once I started. The characters are believable, even if the storyline borders on fantasy. If you liked the prior two novels, you will like this one as well. The humanity shines through.
I can't really find the words to describe how this book made me feel, which I appreciate is unhelpful for a text-based book review. Spending time with Nolan Baker was an absolute joy. New Adult is an incredibly cute, wholesome story and perfect for a reader who wants to leave feeling hopeful and joyful.
I absolutely loved this book, it was soft and adorable. I personally body-swap/time travelly books and so Nolan being a 23 year old, waking up in his 30 year old body was a great take of the 13 going on 30.
The book is about a flawed character, we read as he grows and matures. I truly love how Janovsky starts by writing a character that is quite unlikeable but by the end of the book we are rooting for him.
Definitely worh the read.
4.75/5 stars! I love queer romance stories and 90s romcom movies, so I was sooooo excited to read this book. There were so many emotions in this story and I just couldn't get out of my feels of Nolan and Drew. I want to crawl into this book and give them both a hug. Ughhh! Just such a good story.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I went into this excited. 13 going in 30 vibes. A movie I love.
But sadly this just didn't work for me. I ended up dnfing 38% of the way through. I wanted to love this.
The first part was too slow and I struggled to really care for the main character or any potential romance.
While the beginning of part two was better. I still didn't like or care for him. Making it hard for me to want to continue to read.
I found this difficult to get along with. The main character is pretty insufferable throughout, but does have a bit of development that I liked. Overall I just struggled to enjoy the book as a whole unfortunately.
Thank you for netgalley and Sourcebooks UK for the arc. apologies for delayed review
I loved this. I was not expecting <spoiler>for it to be a 13 going on 30 storyline, but I absolutely loved it. It was so surprising but pulled off really well, even if once the time jump happened you knew where the storyline was going, it was still enjoyable to whole way through</spoiler> the writing style was great, really enjoyable and easy to read. I loved the representation in the book, and the depth of the characters in such a short space of time. Would definitely recommend and read more of this author’s books.
I found this book really hard to rate because it took so long to grow on me. I won’t sugarcoat it, Nolan Baker is insufferable and the outset, but his growth is so endearing and the romance plays out so beautifully that the second half is probably closer to 4 stars for me. The friends to lovers trope is always a firm favourite of mine, and the way Janovsky seamlessly incorporated Drew’s love of romance novels and all the lovely tropes they contain confirmed his own love for the genre. Nolan’s character development is only so convincing because of how fleshed out his relationships with those around him are, and while the first half of the book was certainly slower for me, I can appreciate its role in building these relationships.
I received a copy of this book from Sourcebooks UK and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I say I was crying happy tears, that does not even begin to cover the state of me and my emotions at the end of this book!
I was captivated from the very beginning, deeply in love with Drew the whole way through, and rooting for Nolan through his whole self discovery journey. I never wanted this book to end, and I am nowhere near ready to leave these characters behind.
I finished this book within 24 hours, I was hooked and couldn’t wait to see what happened next.
The story of Nolan was relatable and inspiring, especially watching him realise what is most important to him.
I loved the idea of the lifestyle company, adding some extra interest to the book. It always had me guessing what was going to happen next and how it would end.
Straight up: I freaking loved this book. As a creative who has just turned 30, it was wholly relatable.
Nolan Baker is a 23 year old stand up comedian who's desperate to make the big time. He's had a crush on his childhood friend and now roommate, Drew for years but won't make any big moves until he's on track with his career goals. He gets his big break... on the same night as his sister's huge company sponsored wedding. After being ducking out on his Mister of Honor duties and leaving Drew to pick up the pieces, he comes to blows with all of his loved ones. After a browse of his weird party favour gifts, he finds some crystals which make some big claims. When Nolan goes to bed and wakes up 7 years in the future, as a 30 year old comedian who is about to tape his stand up special, in the apartment of his dreams, those claims start to seem a bit less false. Nolan has to figure out what he really wants in life and how he can get back to his timeline to make it right.
This book is dreamy, silly rom-com fun. It just ticks so many boxes for me, the pop culture references, the comedy world, the romance and the gut-punching family moments. When there was a reference made to the Lizzie McGuire Movie, I may have lost my collective sh*t.
I love when we're introduced to a flawed character straight away, Nolan's growth throughout the book is really well paced. He's rounded out realistically and it's not one massive truth bomb, it's a whole redemptive arc. The romance with Drew is super sweet too, what a pair of cuties.
One thing that bugged me a bit is that Drew came off as demisexual but I don't think that was explicitly stated? It shouldn't be a big thing but there's so little representation of demisexuality in any kind of media and my demiromantic self would have really appreciated it.
I think the pacing got a bit jarring in the third act, I feel like the middle could have been trimmed a bit and the slower pacing that comes in the third act would have slipped in that bit more naturally. That's me being very picky though!!
If you love 13 Going On 30, stand up comedy or Casey McQuiston novels, this is the book for you.
You’ll probably know that I’m a huge fan of Timothy Janovsky’s books. I loved Never Been Kissed when I read it last year and ended up adoring Matthew Prince. I really enjoy the romcom vibes of his books and they’re perfect for escapism. I’ve been super excited to read New Adult. It was pitched as 13 Going on 30 with time travel and romcom elements.
Nolan Baker is wannabe comedian struggling in New York City. Faced with his perfect sisters upcoming wedding, Nolan decided that comedy might not be in the cards for him after all, and plans to pack it up. First up: asking Drew Techler, how best friend, to be his date.
Unexpectedly, Nolan is offered a last-minute spot to fill in for a famous comedian, and selfishly decides to take it. This sends ends up sending him seven years into the future (where he is a successful comedian). Faced with a disappointed family and a scary new life, Nolan turns to his best friend for help… the man who is no longer talking to him and hates his guts.
Janovsky’s characters are always so lively and these were no different. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Nolan and Drew and thought it was really interesting how the author combined the friends to lovers trope with the hate to love trope. The time travel aspect was really fun but I adored how this book still felt like a good old contemporary romance.
The author is so good at combining humour and heart clenching scenes. I really appreciated the discussion of mental health and the depression rep. I’ll always be in favour of representing mental health in books because it’s something that just isn’t talked about enough.
This was another wonderful book by Timothy Janovsky that I would highly recommend. I really do enjoy his writing and I cannot wait to read his next book!

I have read and enjoyed all of Timothy Janovsky's books. Thank you to Netgalley for giving me an ARC of New Adult. I struggled with this one initially due to the magic/time travel element. Ultimately, I loved it and rooted for Nolan & Drew to have a long HEA. Janovsky's writing is so good and witty. Highly recommend, especially for fans of 13 going on 30.
New Adult
Author: Timothy Janovsky
Nolan Baker’s sister CeeCee works for Doop – a candle-making, wellness company that he sees as pretty much a cult, though it doesn’t stop him lighting the candles he gets from her, and nearly burning down the apartment he shares with best friend Drew.
The best friend he’s been secretly in love with for two years.
Doop are sponsoring CeeCee’s entire wedding and even giving away strange goodie bags to the wedding party. It’s all a bit OTT as far as he’s concerned but being a family wedding, he can’t avoid it.
Between his regular job as server at The Hardy-Har Hideaway and his attempts to build his stand-up comedy career, with his Mon night gig there, Nolan doesn’t get out on a date very often.
He’s so desperate for that big comedy break, he’s almost wishing away his future.
“Why can’t we just skip to the good part?” he asks.
We’ve all seen the movie – or movies – 13 Going on 30, Big, Freaky Friday, hell, even Scrooge plays around with the idea. The alternate future life in which “everything is perfect”.
But for wannabe comedian Nolan Baker, wishing he could reach the goalpost of thirty as a successful and famous comedy star, isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
His “skipping” the bad stuff to get to the good could well loose him his family, friends, his happiness... Even his best friend Drew.
Stuck seven years later in 2030, in what seems like a great career, the career he’s always wanted, his fame has come at a cost.
Can he set things right?
Can he get back to ‘now’ and age 23?
Can he ever find a pair of matching socks or tell Drew he loves him?
This wonderful and literally magical LGBTQIA+ rom com, is laugh out loud funny and delightfully romantic, but amidst the laughter is the pain. Nolan has made a lot of mistakes with his hunger for celebrity, at the expense of others in his life.
Yet as he meets thirty year old Drew, who is still angry and hurting at his actions, he starts to re-evaluate what’s important to him.
This has all the heart, sadness and joy of films like Sleepless in Seattle but there are many moments that I think anyone in the arts can relate to.
Nolan might be selfish or an idiot at times, but he has a good heart, and just needs to find himself.
The Doop stuff is hilarious, especially the little digs at the exorbitant ‘wellness’ industry, and the reality surrounding health issues as we get older are honest and intense.
This is a terrific, heart-warming book with an unforgettable HEA.
I am so glad to have discovered Janovsky.
It might be Aug, bit I’ll be diving into his earlier Christmas book next.
