I absolutely loved this book which is the first in a new series. I am a huge fan of Debbie Johnson and I have read and enjoyed all of her books. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
This book is similar in style to The Comfort Food Cafe books. It is set in Dorset and has a real community spirit to it. There is a fantastic cast of characters, who I am looking forward to learning more about in the future books.
This book is a heartwarming and feel-good read, although there are also more serious issues raised in the storyline. Overall this is a fantastic book and I really enjoyed reading it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
A perfect summer read from Debbie. Starshine Cove is an oasis in which the lead character has found herself trying to get her life back together. Another excellent read and highly recommend.
Debbie Johnson - Escape To Starshine Cove.
When Ella finds her boyfriend up to no good with his much younger PA, she does what any self respecting woman would do. She takes his swanky car and heads off on a road trip of self discovery.
On her way to Cornwall, the car proves as useless as her cheating boyfriend, and breaks down leaving Ella stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Looking for a garage, Ella stumbles across the picture perfect village of Starshine.
This scenic village is not just beautiful to look at, but it also has a community with a big heart.
They take Ella in and show her nothing but care and kindness. Add in a blossoming friendship with a local hottie and why would Ella ever want to leave this magical little place?
#EscapeToStarshineCove is classic Debbie Johnson. It’s warm hearted, funny, sweet, romantic and charming. It has a gorgeous setting that will enchant you and a colourful, loveable mix of characters.
#EscapeToStarshineCove is a feel good read, that will top up your happiness levels and leave a smile on your face.
Quite simply, a gorgeous read.

With thanks to Netgalley and Storm publishing for a digital arc of this title.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this feel good, summery book.
When Ella walks in on her husband and his PA, she decides it’s time to take off. In her car, with just some essentials, she goes on a road trip, until her car breaks down near a cozy village that seems unreal. The villagers welcome Ella, who is now a dog owner as well, into their midst but is she ready to take the leap into small village life?
After binge reading all the books of the Comfort Food Cafe, I was super excited for the chance to read another one of Debbie Johnson’s books. She is definitely one of my go to feelgood authors!
Ella is running from grief and disappointment, when her car breaks down and she ends up in a small, beach town near Cornwall. On her way into town, she attracts a stray dog the town children had taken to calling the "weresheep". The unapologetically quirky residents of Starshine Cove immediately warm to her and even offer her a job if she wants to stay.
This is the second book in a row I have read that features a pandemic and post pandemic plot line. After the first, I thought maybe it was too soon and at the same time, too late. Escape to Starshine Cove handled it way better, dealing with the mental toll it took on so many people.
I would encourage anyone looking for a light, fun, uplifting read to pre-order this one today, or pick it up when it comes out tomorrow. It is sparkly and happy and will leave you with a comforted, happy feeling.
After Ella walked in to find her boyfriend cheating with another woman, she knew at that moment her life had changed. She has no idea where she will go to start her life again.
She finds Starshine Cove to be just where she needs to be and all the people living there will be just what she needs.
The journey to find her place in life was so perfectly written that I could feel every word the author wrote.
I am looking forward to the next book in the Starshine Cove series.
Thank you NetGalley, Debbie Johnson and Storm Publishing for the copy of Escape to Starshine Cove.
This is my personal review.
I just loved this whimsical, sweet romance about Ella and her life in Starshine Cove.
Ella has slowly been losing her sense of 'self' for awhile. She has been worked to the bone in the healthcare field during the pandemic, had personal losses of her own, and arrives home one day to find her boyfriend having an affair. She decides to pack her bags and start a new life for herself, even though she has no actual plans of where to go or what to do. A series of events leads Ella to discover a sweet, stray dog (Larry) and a beautiful community (Starshine Cove).
Initially this little town seems too good to be true - it's Ella's 'happy place' come to fruition. As Ella spends time in this whimsical town, she's introduced to many wonderful, caring people. But as time goes by, Ella realizes that life in Starshine Cove isn't 'too good to be true' - it's created through years of community, caring, and love. She learns that like herself, the wonderful people of Starshine Cove have also experience stress, loss and trauma in their own personal lives as well. But perhaps instead of running from their problems, they've learned how to help each other through them instead. Will Ella be able to give herself grace and provide herself with some much needed selfcare that allows her to love not only herself, but those around her as well?
The author did a wonderful job developing these characters - I genuinely liked EVERYONE in the book (somehow even the boyfriend who had the affair). Starshine Cove came to life, and I can't imagine a more beautiful place to be 'lost' than a wonderful beach, a bakery, a local pub, and a cave that almost seems magical. I'm excited to read the next book in this new series!
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book!
This is my first Debbie Johnson read and it definitely won't be my last. Currently hunting through other books she has written to read more!
I loved the fact that just like in a dream, the whole 'too good to be true' community presented itself. Glorious settings and quirky characters. I really badly want to visit myself. I appreciate the humour and banter that the characters had and the fact that although they were flawed, some scenes weren't overly dramatised for dramas sake. One fine example of maturity was the way Mark and Kim were handled before Ella left.
You have definitely left me wanting more. More banter, more relationships and quirks and definitely more Larry!
Thanks to Netgalley and the author and publisher for a temporary copy in exchange for an honest review.
What a refreshing, honest, well-rounded story that portrays the power of community in how it can heal and direct lost or wounded souls. A community that shines like the stars in its ability to love, care and nurture all those who stumble into its borders. A place without harsh judgement and preconceived notions. A group of people available to support and assist each other through thick and thin. It is here at Starshine Cove we see the true spirit of giving and loving your neighbour.
I got a clear picture from the author’s descriptions that Starshine Cove is a pristine, breathtaking location: a perfect spot to escape, reset and revitalise. Its natural beauty just wraps around each wanderer or resident like a warm hug and causes them to relax when needed. It is a place where some want to put down roots or find a home for their belongings and heart. For most who accidentally land here, they find it hard to leave. Of course, realistically, this gorgeous haven by the sea is not perfect but close enough.
I had never read books by Debbie Johnson so did not know her writing style. But I am really glad I chose to embark on a journey with her endearing characters to Starshine Cove! This is a stunning modern novel that delves into mental health: a vivid example of how the pressures of life can affect the mind and mood of the most solid of persons. Ella Farrell is a doctor and has handled many emergencies in her job but when she loses her own pregnancy, her life begins to come undone. She blames herself (we all do when this happens) but the novel clearly shows that even when we do our best, a pregnancy can fail. She is not only deeply affected by this loss but also her partner is, too. They end up responding in different ways. She withdraws emotionally, unable to process her grief and he acts out his sadness by taking up with a younger woman. When Ella walks in on them, she is initially shocked and hurt. But when she thinks about it, she realises the cause. They had been drifting apart, lost in their own disappointment, driving to different destinations. And although this event has shone a light on the potholes that had developed, it has exposed a shakey ground underneath. Their issues were not sudden and she knows no matter what she does, she cannot reclaim the past or fix their broken relationship. Damage repair is not going to work. Her feelings have changed and she immediately wishes to escape the whole sordid mess. Although the betrayal pushes her to make an abrupt decision, she knows it is the right thing to do. Treating the symptoms will never be enough. When there’s no cure, it is best to move on.
So she takes off, not knowing where she will end up. Whether because of fate or something else, she finds herself having car trouble in the middle of nowhere. No phone connection and no houses in view so she steps out of the vehicle and begins walking in a direction hoping to find help. But just before she does, a scraggly furry creature appears. A small dog who looks starved and lost. This part of the story moved me to tears, as the descriptions are both heartbreaking and uplifting. Beautiful humour is inserted here which provides great comic relief surrounding this little fellow. He is a wonderful character and ultimately plays a generous part in her restoration. As one article by Four Paws International states, ‘Animals are our soulmates, helpers and friends.’ This story demonstrates this beautifully, that pets ‘have a positive effect on physical and mental health, they give us emotional support…and can be a calm anchor in stressful situations.’ Ella learns this very quickly. Although she initially rescues him, takes a thorn from his foot, feeds and baths him, he also rescues her and is one of many community members who helps her get back in touch with her positive emotions. This little dog and the people of Starshine Cove, allow her to feel alive again. Yet there are bumps along the way, when she tries to be brave and move forward.
I loved how Debbie delves into psychology to offer explanations of why people do what they do in response to life’s curveballs. This offers depth and insight. There are many lines of wisdom and good advice provided through various characters, including solid analysis and direction from her Psychiatrist friend. In fact, all the characters surrounding Ella are likeable. Especially Jake, who is extra special. His patience, kindness, friendship, understanding and love provide the ingredients she needs to conquer many hurdles.
This is a beautiful, full, satisfying story that lifted my spirits, inspired my heart and made me very glad I read it. The emotions are real, raw, tender and triumphant. I also loved the name Starshine Cove which was obviously taken from the caves in the area that contained glittering stones that are highlighted when the moon hits the walls just right. There are some tender moments of romance and gentle passion in the cave. This precious story made my heart sigh, sing and cheer. I also enjoyed the beautiful symbolism scattered across its canvas. Now I am dying to read the next instalment and to also delve into Debbie’s previous stories. I highly recommend Escape to Starshine Cove without hesitation. 5 Glittering Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for my review copy.
This is the first book in a new series from Debbie Johnson that centres on Starshine Cove, a beautiful and magical bay and community in Dorset that I wished was real by the end of this story.
The tale concerns doctor Ella Farrell who has reached a crisis in her life, which has finally culminated in her fleeing home after catching her long-term partner cheating on her. After travelling around aimlessly for a few days, her car breaks down and, seeking help, she wanders down a path that opens out onto the most perfect beach she has ever seen. Further exploration reveals a village of small dwellings and businesses and a collection of truly warm and welcoming people who persuade her to stay for a while. At the Starshine Inn, she meets strikingly handsome landlord Jake, who also wandered into the Cove by chance and decided to stay. As the days and weeks go by, Ella gradually begins to feel part of the community and that maybe this is where she belongs. She also feels more and more attracted to Jake. However, a near tragedy has her realising that perhaps she should rethink her future and that Starshine Cove and her relationship with Jake could be just too good to be true.
I absolutely loved this charming, heart-warming and romantic story, with its incredible setting and amazing characters. There is a lot of the trademark Debbie Johnson comedy throughout the story, but also some very serious and heartbreaking back stories and moments for all the characters. Ella herself has had a hard few years and deserves a large dose of TLC, but others in the little village have also suffered hard times that had tears running down my cheeks as they were related. The stories of cafe owner Connie and elderly resident George are particularly poignant. It would be remiss of me not to mention perhaps the most important character of all - Larry, a stray dog befriended by Ella as she arrived at Starshine Cove, who became her faithful companion through thick and thin. This is a book that I recommend to all. Fans of Debbie Johnson will probably, like me, recognise echoes of her Comfort Food Cafe series which I also enjoyed immensely. I am already looking forward to the next book in this series, a taster for which is included at the end of this book.
This is a cute read, with some deeper themes. Ella is trying to find herself and her way after a nasty breakup. It's set in a quaint town in Dorset that just feels cozy and like somewhere I'd like to visit.
A great opening book in a new series about idyllic Starshine Cove set in Dorset. It’s a feel good, easy to read story, ideal for a beach read. Ella leaves behind a stressful job after discovering her boyfriend in the act of cheating on her. On her journey to escape she stumbles across beautiful Starshine Cove and its unique community. It’s an enjoyable journey of discovery that leaves you feeling warm and cosy.
This is my favorite summer read of 2023. I loved the journey the author took the reader through of discovering life anew . Thank you to the publisher, the author and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.
Ella is on a journey after finding her boyfriend cheating in their house. She leaves her dead end job in health care, takes his car and drives towards the English Coast. After a car breakdown she has a encounter with a stray dog she befriends and a new friend she is interested in in a beautiful quirky seaside village. Her journey is to find herself, reclaim who she truly is and rebuild a life of joy that she did not find in her past.
I love the authors writing, the humor and realness of this book. This is the perfect summertime read with all the summer elements of a beautful beach town, rediscovery of joy and starting over. I highly recommend this wonderful book for your reading enjoyment. Ella is a rich charcter, honest and a great example to us all that through starting over and taking a leap of faith you can change your life.
A wonderful read from Debbie Johnson. Lovely setting interesting characters and a relatable plot.
Looking forward to more books set in Starshine Cove.
Escape to Starshine Cove is a feel-good book about Ella and her journey of self-discovery at Starshine Cove.
Ella was not happy about how things were going, and she broke up with her boyfriend after catching him cheating on her. She flees from the house, spending one month on the road. She stumbled upon a stray dog when her car broke down in the middle of nowhere and later ended up in Starshine Cove.
One can empathise with Ella’s character. She has been through a lot, which has affected her mental health. She needed a break to discover herself again, and Starshine Cove was the perfect place for her. There She met Jake, who understood her, and they developed feelings for each other. The only thing I didn’t like about Ella was her dilemma about whether she wanted to go or stay here. Larry the sheep, Ella’s dog, was the cutest addition. Larry the sheep, Ella’s dog, was the cutest addition.
I loved the premises of Starshine Cove; this place had a happy, positive, and magical vibe. All the characters were welcoming and wanted the best for Ella.
I loved the plot, the settings, and the pacing. It was a quick and lighthearted read. Sensitive topics in the book were very well handled by the author.
I would recommend it if you are looking for lighthearted and feel-good books.
TW: Anxiety, Cancer, Miscarriage, Death
A lovely feel good read to while away a rainy afternoon.
Ella is a doctor who works at a drop in centre in London but is close to burning out, instead of going to work she goes home where she finds her boyfriend in bed with his PA. She gabs a bag of random things, jumps in her car and heads off to Cornwall not knowing what her next move will be
To top her day off her car breaks down where there is no phone reception etc so she has to go for a walk to try and find help which is how she stumbles into Starshine Cove.
As she is welcomed by everyone she starts to relax and ponders her next move. Will she stay or will she move on ?
Definitely a five-star read! I started reading Escape to Starshine Cove and could...not...stop! Finished it in one afternoon.
Following tragic loss during the pandemic and a cheating partner, physician Ella Farrell seeks to escape London and try to find peace in her life. Stumbling upon Starshine Cove after her car breaks down, she thinks she has found her happy place. She is welcomed by the residents of this small community as if she is family. Starshine Cove is a magical place and not even on any map.
In a magical place where all residents have a nickname and fun in life is the game, Starshine Cove is the place to be. Will Ella find the peace she so desperately needs?
A copy was provided for my review. All opinions are my own.
A delightful read, full of quirky characters and set in an idyllic sounding village by the sea.
Ella has been coasting in her life and relationship for a while, after a past event in her life, so when she catches her boyfriend cheating it's the incentive she needs to pack her bags and find somewhere where she can be happy. After car trouble she stumbles across the little hidden village of Starshine Cove and ends up staying.
I did find her shall I stay/shall I leave issue a bit irritating, as she left a couple of times and came back, never quite being able to make her mind up, and then blaming herself for an issue that was out of her hands. But the characters and setting were absolutely wonderful, a real community. Very enjoyable read.
Love love love this book.
So not predictable as a lot of people think romance books are nowadays.
This book has it all heartbreak in more than one form, love again in more than one form, hope, escapism, mental health issues for doctors after covid and how to live in the moment.
Im so glad Ella found starshine cove and Larry who needed Ella just as much as she needed him.
Also that she had to have time away from the coce to understand what she was missing. I can't wait for book 2
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Ella works as a GP. Coming home, she finds her husband with another woman.
She leaves her house, and London, to get away from her present life. Unfortunately, her car breaks down, on the outskirts of the magical Starshine Cove. When Ella arrives, she thinks the residents aren’t real, almost too good to be true. Slowly she begins to enjoy living in the cove and the people offer a reason to stay for good. But, is Ella ready for this?
There are some hard topics covered throughout the story, like miscarriage, cancer, hospitals, death, anxiety. But Debbie has handled them sensitively.
I'm really looking forward to reading the upcoming books in the series.
I recommend this book.
