„Seven years.
A lot can happen in seven years.
A lot can happen in seven seconds.”
„The Last Train Home” Elle Cook
The main characters of the book are Abbie and Tom, who meet by chance on a late-night train. Their connection is instant, but it is soon tested by an unexpected event that profoundly changes their lives.
The story spans several years, offering readers a deeper understanding of the characters and the evolution of their relationship as they navigate life’s challenges. While the long timeline initially seemed daunting, it ultimately allowed me to immerse myself fully in the story and build a stronger bond with the characters. The book masterfully portrays the characters’ emotions, keeping readers engaged with its compelling twists and turns.
Thank you to netgalley for this book in exchange for my honest opinion!

The Last Train Home by Elle Cook.
3.5 STARS.
Sliding Doors-meets-One Day, which sort of sums it up. Except it doesn't. Becauae there's more to this tale. The backdrop is suitably tragic (London, mid-2000s...) so it's a boy-meets-girl with a difference. Definitely worth a read - have the tissues ready.
Sorry, but NO.
Unbelievable naive, completely boring and full of mistakes and not finished thoughts.
Not for me
A brilliant read and one I really enjoyed. The characters are loveable. The plot is one that is engaging and I found myself completely drawn into the story and enjoyed the writing style.
I really wanted to love The Last Train Home just as much as i loved The Man I Never Met but i just couldn't. I did enjoy it enough but the characters just weren't all that likeable. They didn't hold themselves accountable and messed around with not only their own and each others feelings but that of others and it annoyed me because they had so much potential! That said, i did really like the plot and thought it was very unique and i really love Elle Cooks writing style i just didn't gel well with this set of characters.
In the heart of London, amidst the memories of significant events, Abbie and Tom's lives collide on a fateful night on a derailed train. Their chance encounter sparks a connection that transcends mere coincidence, leading them on a journey of friendship, love, and missed opportunities. Elle Cook masterfully weaves their story, capturing the essence of fleeting moments and the intricacies of timing in matters of the heart, because "A Lot Can Happen in 7 Seconds"
3.5 stars rounded up 🥰
An emotional and compelling story, I'd call this more a drama than a romance though, it isn't your typical romance story - a lot of pining and angst, not a lighthearted read and set in a very tumultuous time in the UK.
The beginning was promising, but then halfway through I felt it stagnated a little bit the way the storyline was done, maybe this was because i fcking hated samantha and sean. I feel like the ending was a little rushed and we didn't get the pay off we so deserved hence the lower rating.
But I loved both main characters, I finished it as I wanted to see their happy ending, it was lovely that the unconventional family dynamics didn't hinder them.
All in all a good book but I definitely think it could have been a little MORE romantic with more interaction between the mcs.
I enjoyed Elle's writing so I will definitely be reading more of her books.💓
This was incredibly good, very emotional but I loved where it ended up. I loved both main characters and getting to see their journey from both POVs. A 5 star read.
This is the second book I have read by Elle Cook, and it was just as enjoyable as the last. I love the way she writes and it really transports you into the story.
I do like a novel that spans over time, following characters as they go about their lives, reuniting and separating. The characters were a bit annoying and entitled at times with their champagne drinking and not that attainable lifestyles but it made for an enoyable read all the same.
Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to Penguin Random House, Cornerstone and NetGalley for the ARC.
This book was truly wonderful – a five star read without a doubt. It’s a very complex contemporary romance, that had my heart in a tight grasp the entire way through.
This book was the epitome of right person, wrong time, and it just made me so sad that Abbie and Tom were meant for each other but life kept pulling them in different directions, but thank goodness they found their way back to each other because I don’t think my heart could have taken it if they didn’t. Abbie and Tom are great characters with flaws and vulnerabilities, and my heart is attached to them. This book sent me on an emotional rollercoaster that took me a minute to try and get over.
I love when we get multiple perspectives and this book provides a Dual POV. This really allows us to get to know the characters on a deeper level, and allows us to see how they are feeling, what they are thinking. It definitely added more depth to the story using this type of point of view and narrative.
I also love when we get an epilogue – I need to have a sneak peak into the future of the characters and this book gave us exactly what we wanted to read at the end. I think this book has a perfect ending that will not leave any reader disappointed.
Also, special mention to the friendship between Tom and Abbie’s Dad, it was so sweet.
I 100% will recommend this book to anyone that will listen – it’s a beautiful read.
First of all a big thank you to the author, netgalley and the publishers for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.
"Never go in search of love. Go in search of life. And life will find you the love you seek."
I really enjoyed this one. At the beginning of this our two main characters, Abbie and Tom, meet on a train that ends up derailing a part of the way through their journey home. This unlikely but tragic accident binds them together and then we get to see how the rest unfolds. This was heart-breaking at times, seeing how this tragic event not only brought the pair together but also tore them apart. I'm happy I finally managed to get to this as this was a quick and enjoyable read.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review. This is the first book I've read by Elle Cook and really enjoyed it. There were so many will they/ when will they moments and some of these made me sad. I've just watched One Day, after reading it years ago, and this reminds me of that. Attraction, friendship, a bond, timing and spread over many years. A satisfying read. Would recommend.
A lot can change in 7 seconds, a lot can change in 7 years.
Abbie and Tom meet on a tube both after a night out, when the train eneds up crashing and Tom rescues abbie.
I love how you never know how it will end for both of them. But I'm so happy with the ending.
Right person, wrong time
Thank you NetGalley and RandomHouse UK for the opportunity to read this eARC
I loved this story, it felt unique for a contemporary romance and bit more complex.
I love a little heartache before my happy ending and this did not disappoint
highly recommend :)
It's 2005, and Abbie and Tom meet on the Tube after separate nights out. They hit it off but are bonded through tragedy soon after. Their friendship develops into something more, but a shocking revelation during a passionate moment leaves Abbie humiliated. Despite their feelings, timing is never right over the next 5 years. They remain each other's "ones that got away." The book evokes nostalgia, breaking the reader's heart and putting it back together with its genuine, loveable characters. It's a story of missed chances and the hope of finding a way back to each other.
This was the first book that I've read by Elle Cook but it certainly won't be the last.
I really enjoyed this story and the whole notion of the right person at the wrong time.
It felt realistic to see that the path to finding love isn't always a short, straight line.
There were also plenty of unexpected twists and it wasn't your typical romance at all.
I also appreciated the dual perspectives and the slow burn as time passes through the years for both main characters.
Were there frustrating moments? Yes but they felt authentic and showed that life doesn't always go as planned either.
The Last Train Home was a quick and easy read that had me captivated from the very beginning.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Last Train Home is the first book I've read by Elle Cook and it won't be the last. Straight away I was drawn to Tom and Abbie's story. They're thrown together under horrendous circumstances and you follow their stories over seven years. The ups and downs that they both face made for a page turning read.
Firstly, with huge apologies this review should have been posted yesterday!
Secondly, a huge thanks you to the publishers for sending me a gifted copy of this book.
this was a great read. I am quickly becoming a huge fan of this genre. I absolutely love the way we get to experience the characters life and how every day life and decisons can effect us.
There were so many times in this book I wanted to scream “just kiss her!”
I loved reading Tom and Abbies journey and how the timing was never right for them
The book is hard to put down and I felt myself become very invested in Tom and Abbie’s lives. Almost as if I knew them
The book is pure escapism and the authors writing is just perfect
I can’t wait to read more by this author
