I love a good rom-com book
This is well written and from the very first page I was hooked! The author takes you on a fabulous journey with lots of highs and lows throughout and the characters have depth and personality.
Thank you Random House UK for the ARC. The premise caught my eye because I love a romance book that takes place across several years. It really builds the foundation of the relationship and makes me more invested as a reader. British humor and writing is my fave. Very distinct and enjoyable.

I loved reading this book. It had more twists and turns then you'd expect. The banter in here was class, you're sure to find yourself laughing out loud. All of this meant u flew through the book in less than a week. (Quick for my standards)
This book has a traumatic event that brings 2 somewhat strangers closer than ever in the aftermath. I enjoyed how it shared both Tom & Abbie's POV and would definitely recommend it to friends.
Personally it's nice to read a book based in London as there are so many that crop up based outside of the UK.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC copy, all opinions are my own.
Tom and Abbie meet on the Tube, either on their way home after a night out. The train derails and Tom pulls Abbie out. There is chemistry, but the spark between them always happens at the wrong time, and then they aren't even talking to each other any more.
I liked this second/third/fourth chance novel set between 2005 and 2012. I was rooting for the both of them from the start.
Im a sucker for a well-written romcom and a meet -cute. and the Last Train Home hit the spot perfectly. From Abbie and Tom's first sighting of each other, the story takes the reader on a gorgeous journey through highs and lows, keeping the characters and their feelings completely at the heart of the novel. I read it in one gulp.
Enjoyed the book. It's accurately described as a will they won't day title. It was a long book, but it still felt appropriately based. Surprisingly the characters evolved with and away from each other. This book makes you understand how invisible strings work and what's meant to be is always meant to be. It'll make you a little delusional on the romance because encounter anything of this sort is both humbling, scary and loving. It does get a little predictable especially if you have watched One Day.
If anyone wants a very short review/ description: It's like a sister to One Day (or an echo) but has a happy ending. Now what you call a happy ending is subjective.
I adored the characters! I was all for the chemistry but the plot missed the mark (the very high mark) for me...
Maybe because of the high hopes I had after The Man I Never Met! ...which totally took me by surprise & was a 2022 favourite!
The closed door impossible romance was torturous (obviously intentional!) I felt it went on a little too long & as a result the ending rushed by in a blur.
Abbie and Tom are on a train that is derailed and Abbie is hurt. They'd never met before but their lives keep clashing
This one sounded super adorable and similar to other romances I've enjoyed in the past however I just could not get into this one and kept putting it down with no urge to pick it back up.
I'm gutted because it sounded great but it just wasn't for me.
Absolutely brilliant, loved it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advance copy, I will definitely be recommending.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a review.
I liked the meet cute on the tube as it was different, the characters had already started talking before the accident happened that changed everything.
A lot of the storylines happen because of coincidences and bad timing. If Tom hadn't of looked at his phone they might have been together, and if Abby hadn't met Sean through Tom, she probably wouldnt have dated him.
It worked really well reading from both characters point of views, it really flowed well going back and forth going from Abbie to Tom. It was an emotional read.
Sometimes it would be frustrating with the characters when they were in other relationships and found it annoying with their poor decision making.
I couldnt work out what was going to happen in their separate lives and whether there was a chance of them ending ip together or not especially with it being a dual POV, as it could have been 2 separate endings.
Cook weaves a slow-burning romance that is heartbreakingly beautiful from beginning to end, a story about the broken pieces of ourselves we carry on through life that can make us blind to what’s right in front of us, and how something new and beautiful can be made from the sum of our broken parts. I wish I could read this book for the very first time over and over again.
Running for last tube train, Abbie just makes it as the doors slide shut, and this is where her destiny changes. After a flirty, tipsy conversation with Tom, who is also on the train, suddenly both their lives change forever after the tube derails.
The start of the story is in 2005 and we follow Abbie and Tom for many years to see how their intertwined lives pan out. A real “will they, won’t they” story with a “Sliding Doors” vibe thrown in for good measure.
A wonderful read which makes you think you know what’s going to happen and how their lives will pan out, and then a curve ball is thrown at you. Will make you laugh and cry in equal measures.
This book did not follow what I thought it was going to be. Twists and turns to get to the finale of the story. Really enjoyed it.
This was a very cute festive read. Although I loved it, I wish the book came with a trigger warning, there’s an event in the story which features at the start of the book and is referenced throughout. It didn’t bother me as such, I would’ve liked to be pre-warned. This terrible experience which brought these two characters together, really helped to get to know them and to instantly like and build sympathy for them. I loved the easy banter and connection the characters, Tom and Abbie, had. I absolutely loved this, I was hooked from the start, I loved devouring it.

Never judge a book by its cover - serves me right 🤣 It looks like a cute rom com but it was much more than this. I went into this blind without reading the blurb as there's not much I wont read about. I was expecting a bit of fluff to get me through the boring days between xmas and new year but I was actually hooked, this book gives all the feels.
Elle Cook also writes historical fiction under the name Lorna Cook, I haven't read any yet but I hope to do so soon cos I loved the writing style.

I must admit the cover drew me to this book, and while The Last Train Home started off with a bang, I am sad to say halfway through the book I lost interest. You could call The Last Train Home a book about missed opportunity or bad timing, but this isn't Sliding Doors or Sleepless in Seattle. This is a book where two MCs have an adorable meet cute that goes from adorable to dramatic in seven seconds flat.
I will admit, I loved the line, "A lot can happen in seven years. A lot can happen in seven seconds." I thought it was foreshadowing, but the book didn't move where I hoped it would move. Our MCs both make poor decisions, communicate poorly, some of which is due to drinking way too much way too often. While I liked the MCs they reminded me more of teenagers than working adults.
I really, really wanted to like this book, but it was not what I was expecting, and even the hint of infidelity (especially with children involved) is a huge turn off for me.
Think this might have been a case of reading this at the wrong time, unfortunately! As I started reading it on my commute to work, so the opening scene of the train derailing felt quite triggering without an immediate resolution.

This was a brilliant love story with a right person wrong time element throughout. I didn’t expect the train to become a trauma element in the story but it was a really interesting take on finding the right person at the wrong time. I completely fell in love with Tom and Abbie from their first meeting. There were times when I wanted to tell them to cop on to themselves for being so oblivious, I really enjoyed their journey.
The ending was beautiful!
This book gave me very similar vibes to Emily Henry’s writing.
I’d recommend giving this book a read if you like:
- Right person, wrong time
- Strangers to friends to lovers
- Emily Henry
- McDonald’s happy meals
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguins publishers for a copy of this book.
This was such a great story. Beautiful and hard to read all at once. The characters had great depth and I enjoyed watching them grow. This story has lots of twists and turns and is really well paced.
