This book is definitely designed for beginners, but at points, I felt like it was also written by a beginner. Particularly in regards to the herb section, I felt the author made some poor choices around warnings. For certain plants, they would include “Not for consumption,” but for others that are dangerous in medium to large quantities, they said nothing. As a librarian, I would not purchase this book for my collection out of concern for my patrons physical well-being, and I wouldn’t recommend it to beginners. On the other hand, the book is not in-depth enough to recommend to more advanced audiences. It’s truly such a shame, because visually this is an incredibly charming book!
This book is adorable! The illustrations are whimsical and just plain fun. For as short of a book as it is, I was surprised at how comprehensive it is. As such, it would be a very useful resource for someone interested in witchy cooking, especially beginners! It covers the usual seasonal aspects of cooking, as well as an illustrated reference about what certain herbs and plants are used for in both a practical and spiritual sense.
If you find yourself being the person that your friends go to for your chamomile tea that somehow always turns out right, this book might be good for you.
Disclaimer: I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. However, I am not being paid for this review.
The aesthetic of the book is so cottage-core charming.
The content is gentle and easy enough for a novice like me to understand.
I have to remember our Mabon etc falls at different times of the year, being in the Southern Hemisphere.
I'm looking forward to diving in and growing a tea garden amongst other things I"ve taken from this book.
I received a copy via NetGalley and all opinions are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book, it was packed full of helpful hints and handy recipes. We just got a new kitchen so I can’t wait to put them all into practice!
Incredibly clear and wonderfully done! I’m always a bit lost with my craft and this book feels homely and instructive enough to help me get back on the wagon.
This book is really magical and the illustrations are beautiful. I loved the herb guide, especially the various intentional garden guides. It helped me to think of the ingredients I already have at home in new ways and got me really excited about my kitchen. It is unique with some of the historic perspective on the myths behind certain seasons and how to honor the spirits of that season.
Thank you, Wellfleet Press and NetGalley.
Love this book that I will purchase this to add to my shelf. The explanations, illustrations and spell recipes are just delightful. I'm new to kitchen magic and found this book helpful. Thank you!
This book is a great resource for anyone looking to appreciate the magic in the world around us. Each season is represented with the plants, days of note and recipes. The meanings and benefits of many plants and colors are included and explained in an understandable way.
Kitchen witchery is probably one of the most accessible forms of craft for the newcomer, given its way of celebrating the seasons through preparing nourishing foods for others. And what could be more magical than food, grown from tiny seeds into delicious things filled with nutrients and energy and tied into our rituals and relationships? This beautifully designed book (shoutout to Laura Klynstra for the exquisite design) offers many ways to make our food even more magical through intentional growing, harvesting, preparing, cooking, and serving. You'll find information on creating a kitchen altar, knowing kitchen goddesses, correspondences and moon magic, as well as a full section on the Wheel of the Year and how to show gratitude for the fruits and energy of each season. There are plenty of books on kitchen witchery out there, but this compact and beautiful addition is one that will appeal to all, even those who don't practice witchcraft. 4 stars.
Thank you, Wellfleet Press and NetGalley, for providing an eARC of this book. Opinions expressed here are solely my own.
I've read a few within this genre before, but have to say this is definitely more newcomer friendly and comes with some beautiful illustrations which makes the reading experience for me at least more enjoyable.
The Handbook is split into the four seasons and feels really accessible in regards to explanations, and information on what each ingredient 'does'. Looking forward to giving some of the tips and recipes a whirl in the kitchen over the coming year.
This is so fun! I love all the fun tips and recipes - especially the tea reading guide! The guidelines on how to build a kitchen herb garden are so helpful too. The book is broken down into the four seasons, with a guide on seasonal rituals and events.
I am in love with this book. First of all, it’s so visually beautiful.
As for the content: I loved the herb guide, especially the various intentional garden guides. It helped me to think of the ingredients I already have at home in new ways and got me really excited about my kitchen.
If you think of food as medicine, this book is perfect for you. It really helped me to reframe my mindset around intentional cooking and creating with food. I think we all need reminders now and then, even those of us who are pretty intentional already.
What else can I say? This is one of the books that I will go back to over and over again as each season turns. My only critique is I wish it were longer!
I loved the illustrations and the chapter on gardens especially. I enjoyed the breakdown by season and the wheel of the year and I specifically loved the spice pantry for each season. Four Stars.

From the first page to the last it was just a delight to read this book. It has all the basics and then some, the layout is great, giving a reference book for later use, and with recipes for everyone. I would recommend it for all ages, families, kitchen must have!
A sweet little book brimming with ideas to inspire and inform witches in the kitchen.
The Kitchen Witch Handbook is a wonderful mix of history, myth, recipes, and stunning illustrations. While it is small in stature it's wisdom is some of the best I have read in the space. The Beautiful esthetic will make it a tome worthy of display too! I can see myself flipping through it's pages for years to come as it inspires and brings life to my kitchen.
I was genuinely excited to dive into "The Kitchen Witch Handbook." Being in the medical field, I have a keen interest in homemade remedies and exploring different practices. What intrigued me most were the seasonal recipes included in the book. I can't wait to try the Soothing Lavender White Chocolate Shortbread—it sounds absolutely delicious!
While I wouldn't personally label myself as a witch, I strongly believe that intentions play a significant role in cooking. The love and care we infuse into our culinary creations can be felt by those who enjoy them. That's why I find it fascinating to explore the beliefs and practices of others, such as kitchen witchcraft.
"The Kitchen Witch Handbook" not only satisfies my curiosity but also provides me with inspiration for infusing my cooking with magic and intention. It's a wonderful way to enhance the sensory experience of food and create memorable moments in the kitchen.
As I embark on my culinary adventures with this book, I'm excited to explore the intersection of healing, intention, and delicious flavors. "The Kitchen Witch Handbook" offers me a delightful gateway into a world where cooking becomes a magical experience.
Really unique cook book/guide that shares a lot about magic, witchcraft, and food! I really enjoyed the aesthetic and thought this was a fun book.
5 stars
This is going to make a beautiful physical book if they keep the layout and colors the same! I really can’t wait to get my hand on a copy.
This is a fantastic book for beginners or even seasoned practitioners. Lots of interesting information contained here.
What I truly like about this book is its readability. I’ve read many books on the holidays, especially Samhain, but what I appreciate about this author is how the information is presented. I can get overwhelmed by wordy descriptions, especially if the holiday is around the corner and I’m trying to cram in some last minute knowledge. Aurora Kane does a great job at keeping my attention and also encouraging me to read just a littttle bit more. I especially enjoy the pantry sections for each season—it’s a great way of summarizing what ingredients I need to stock up on! All in all, the book doesn’t fuss with pretentious passages and gets right down to the information with beautiful illustrations and an overall simplicity I appreciate.
This book is absolutely stunning! It gives you plenty of knowledge and history that every aspiring kitchen witch needs. The recipes chosen for this book are useful, cost efficient and easy to follow. This will be the perfect holiday gift!
