I was sooo excited to be able to read an advanced copy of the last instalment of one of my favourite ever trilogies, so sad it’s ended but it was done brilliantly and I can’t fault it tbh. I loved the way everything tied up and the pace really picked up towards the end. I just love the characters in this series so this was a great read for me. Would highly recommend 🥰
I was so excited to read this book, I’m a huge fan of the Bayview series and I adore all the characters. This, the final story in the trilogy, certainly didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t put it down, the plot has so many twists and turns it had me hooked. It was amazing catching up with all my favourite characters and I felt that all their stories were wrapped up perfectly. I’m sad that the series ends here but I felt that this story was definitely a perfect conclusion to what has been an amazing trio of books.
Finished in one day! Loved the finale to the trilogy and feel it is Karen McManus at her best and as a YA thriller writer she is still at the top
I have been so excited to read this book, and it did not let me down. The Bayview “crew” are back better than ever. I was unsure to how the stories lines would continue however Karen very cleverly weaves each character through the book. I was on the edge of my seat and couldn’t put the book down, may of even stayed up till 3am to finish the book.
I really hope there is another installment!
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read one of my favourite authors early.
One Of Us is Back is the third book in the thriller series which began with a student death in school detention at Bayview High. Over a year later, the Bayview Four have grown in number and are now the Bayview Crew who are all home for the summer and hoping to put past traumas behind them. However, when a hacked billboard carries the message "Time for a New Game, Bayview" it becomes apparent that there is more to come.....more mystery....more lies......more twists and turns....more seeking revenge.
The pace at the start is slow, mainly due to some recapping of the events of the previous two books.and given that it is three years since publication of the previous book in this series, it does help to remind the reader of who has done what up to now.. Once the mystery begins, the pace really picks up and we get to see many of the characters develop further and a cracking murder mystery to unfolds. Of course, we are not done with the lies, the secrets and the revelations some of which come from beyond the grave.and the plot races from threats to kidnap to murder as the Bayview Crew try to unravel the latest web of secrets. I'm sure this will be a huge hit with fans of the One of Us Lying series. Surely all the secrets are out now - or are they?
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the advance review copy.
Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Children's for an ebook ARC of this book in exchange for this review.
I loved that this had throwbacks to when Simon was still alive (6years earlier), helping the reader really piece together everything that has happened throughout this whole series.
At first I found myself getting lost jumping between all the different characters and trying to place them all in my mind, and only really seemed to find myself getting into it at about 30% through (as all characters are brought back from both previous books).. however once I got into the pace of the book I was totally engrossed in the story. It's a very quick, easy read and I really enjoyed being back in Bayview.
Towards the end (around 75%) I thought I had guessed who the villain was but I was wrong, which made the twist so much better. Even though Karen McManus seems to tie up loose ends, I was left wondering if maybe there will be another book? I guess we'll find out soon enough.
This book was so good and I didn’t see the ending coming. I mean no complaints from me that he is dead. But the twist with who it was I found really unexpected. But the beauty in the last chapter about Ashtons pregnancy was so cute. I’m glad all the bayview crew made it out alive that’s for sure. It was just amazing well done.
A great final entry into the One of Us series, which I have loved since book one. I reread the previous two before picking up this review copy to help me put things in context in a clearer way and it really helped.
I love how Karen McManus is able to weave hints and clues throughout the story without spoiling the ending, you pick things up later and realise that they were either red herrings or huge clues. I really love McManus's writing and her ability to create a gripping mystery involving so many moving parts that makes sense is really fantastic. I loved this book, and this series and i'm really sad it's over but I will always keep my eyes peeled for more books by McManus.
As it turns out, more than one of them is back. Jake is back, Bronwyn is back and Simon is back (sort of ). With everyone back in place in Bayview, things start happening. Mysterious messages, people disappearing, we are back into Karen McManus's trademark twisty thriller style. There are a few possible suspects dangled in front of us to keep the reader guessing as to the who and why. As we approach the end, things are slowly revealed leading to what is a sort of satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Somehow though, it lacked some of the shock factor of previous books. I think we know some of the characters too well this time around. Definitely worth a read to finish the story off.
The Bayview finale I didn’t know I needed but am so happy I got!
We’re back with the Bayview Crew and all is not well. Another game is beginning and life is about to turn upside down (again) for our favourite murder club, but who is pulling the strings this time?
A thrilling ride from start to finish. So well crafted that I could barely put it down. All the characters we’ve come to know and love are trying so hard to get on with life but the nightmare that is Bayview just won’t let them! My main thought while reading this was “I’m so glad I don’t live there”. This book slowly reels you in before dropping bombs on you and you find yourself working alongside the Bayview Crew trying to figure out what is going on. This is her best book since the original, I don’t think it’s possible to match the perfection of the first book but this was a worthy finale.
4 out of 5 stars!
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC
I adore reading Karen M McManus’s books! They're such quick and easy reads, I get sucked right in and I cannot put them down!
I devoured One of Us Is Back, I will admit that maybe I should have reread the first two books in this series to remember important details but I digress, I remembered enough that this didn't confuse me!
Loved seeing all the characters and seeing their relationships develop and everything, the plot was interesting, I would have liked it if we had a POV once from Jake that wasn't in the past though! I'd have been intrigued to know what was going on in his mind in the present.
Overall, a definite recommendation, can't wait to see what Karen brings out next!
Thankyou to Netgalley for sending me an arc copy of One of Us Is Back. I enjoyed this book, however not as much as the first one!
This is the final in the Bayview trilogy and it wraps up the story nicely, with a decent bit of backstory into the mysteries throughout the series. Unfortunately, this book is quite confusing, with POVs from quite a few characters and it was tricky to keep up with, I had to go back and remind myself of all the different connections between characters. Some of which, are quite minor and forgettable. Nevertheless, it's a fun, twisty book that completes the series nicely. 3.5
Love it! Like the other two books, One of us is Back was engaging and thrilling. I couldn’t put it down. I love the split narrative and the characterisation of all the different characters. I know my students love these books so I’ll be making sure our library has plenty of copies! I know they’ll fly out!
ONE OF US IS BACK finished off the Bayview trilogy, throwing the cast of two books at a new mystery and forcing them to face their past choices and enemies.
I really liked that this book decided to tackle the fact that this is a town with multiple incidents about the same(ish) people in two years. It could have easily felt far too much of a coincidence that these same people keep getting caught up in mysteries, but instead the toxicity behind it is the focus of this one. It helps it feel like a more realistic scenario.
Nate, Addy, and Phoebe narrate this book, but there are a few chapters from Jake and Simon's past perspectives. It was interesting to get into their heads for once, in a really creepy/gross way as you know what they're going to end up doing and this very much lays down those groundworks.
The book is as pacy and hooking as you'd expect from a Karen M. McManus book, full of twists and danger as the mystery snares around the characters. I gulped this down in an afternoon, loving being about to return to this characters again, but also sad to let them go.
It rounds off the series nicely, coming full circle with Jake returning to the scene, and the characters getting ready to move on with the next phase of their lives.
One of us is back is the third and final book in the one of us is lying trilogy which centres round a group of students at Bayview High School.
I felt that the mystery element of this book wasn’t as strong as the other two however it was still very fast paced and I got through this book in one day.
This book combines the protagonists from the first two books in the series which in my opinion felt like too many characters and it was difficult to keep track of who was who.
I however did love seeing the developments in the relationships between the different characters and thought it was interesting that the trauma that these characters have been through was discussed.
Overall I really enjoyed this trilogy and thought that the ending of one of us is back was the perfect conclusion to the series.
One of Us is Back, Karen McManus
In the third part to her thrilling Bayview series Karen McManus brings together the whole crew as a new game is afoot. This game could be more deadly than the last and Simon says all secrets will out in the end.
I always enjoy a Karen McManus, Queen of the YA thriller. This is another solid in both her bayview series and her releases. Important notes on this one though, she brings her entire crew together so it really helps to have read the previous two books or this just will not flow for you. This is a series not intended to be read out of order.
A decent ending to the trilogy. I found the beginning a little slow, but after about a third of the way in I was invested enough. I'll be buying a copy for my classroom bookcase
One of Us is Back is a fitting end to a much loved series. It neatly wraps up many character arcs while still having a twisty plot that keeps you guessing until the end.
The Bayview Crew are back with another nail biting, suspense-filled drama from the Queen of Teen Crime!
Ever since One of Us is Lying, Karen M. McManus became one of those auto-read authors for me. And every subsequent novel afterwards has reaffirmed that position for me.
This latest offering, the last (sigh) in the Bayview series follows each of its predecessors in being a tight, taut, teen, thriller that not only leaves you guessing but gets inside the heads of each character narrating their chapters.
Many authors stick strictly to third or one-person POV, but McManus regularly gives us multi-person first person POV and nails it each time.
In One of Us is Back, the stakes are higher, we’re past the Truth or Dare game. Now it’s a matter of Life or Death. Who will still be standing once The End draws near? I’ll let you get there yourself, but let me tell you, you won’t see it coming.
Many thanks to Karen M. McManus, Penguin Random House UK Children’s, and NetGalley for an elated of this book. Opinions are my own.
A pacy, compelling conclusion to McManus's Bayview series. While I initially enjoyed seeing the characters from the first two books combined into a larger group, there were ultimately too many characters, relationships, and backstories to keep track of.
