“ we’re swimming in the sea of unintended consequences”

Norma lives a quiet life. She volunteers on a search and rescue team for missing people in her area… So when Jill goes missing, and everybody is blaming the boyfriend Jake, because supposedly people had seen him abuse her in the campground… Norma is on that search and rescue mission,

She does find Jill and Jill pleads and begs with her that if Jake knows she’s alive, he will kill her, she makes a decision to help sneak Jill out of the mountains and bring her to her parents, house, and hopes to never see her again.

Five years later jake is arrested for strangling his wife, and because there is no body Jill is declared dead and Jake is standing trial for murder.

If you’re Norma , what are you do do you let him stand trial ?do you contact Jill? Or do you stay quiet?

This author is my immediate go to Whenever there is a new release, I immediately read it… She always makes me question myself, and always puts me in the “what if” frame of mind

A huge thank you to Lake Union publishing, NetGalley, and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book

Another triumph from a prolific author. Catherine Ryan Hyde is accomplished at entering the experience of characters and probing relevant and intriguing questions.

CRH is a read-no-matter-what author for me so I was excited for this new title. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. I'm giving the book four stars. The main character is truly faced with morale dilemmas and I found them to be quite interesting. I think this book will appeal to many for the mystery and thriller aspect but more for the character study.

I love this author’s ability to connect unlikely characters. In this case a middle aged women who isn’t exactly a people person. But when specific young women come into her life, they become intertwined. This is an important book about intimate partner abuse and also asks the questions about why a certain kind of woman captures public attention when they go missing but others like the epidemic of missing and murder Native American girls seems to go unnoticed.

Norma is a strong woman with wisdom and integrity. She is not compelled to be a fixer but encourages those around her to trust their own decision making abilities. When the truth is compromised Norma offers clarity and separates hyperbole and conjecture.

Overall I liked the story though it is definitely not my favorite by Catherine Ryan Hyde. The characters interacted beautifully and I appreciated the sense of humanity they each had after enduring such trauma.

I would rate this 3.5stars
Thanks to netgalley for the arc

I’m a huge fan of the author so was really excited to get an early copy of this. Norma volunteers as part of search and rescue in a small town. A woman goes missing but her parents claim her boyfriend is abusive. Norma finds her and promises not to reveal she has been found. This starts off years of lies for this woman’s safety. I flew through this book in a few hours and find the writing really good but it wasn’t as gripping as some of the other CRH novels.

Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the copy of A Different Kind of Gone by Catherine Ryan Hyde. When there’s a new book by CRH, I put down whatever I’m currently reading so I can read the new CRH book. I love how she is able to write such vivid characters that I care about them. The story is intriguing and brings up moral dilemmas that made me think. Hyde’s books are great at raising issues and dissecting them in an understandable and non-preachy way and this one is no exception. If you love character-driven books that are well-written this is the book for you!
