I received a complimentary copy of this book "A Different King of Gone" and all opinions expressed are my own. I have read other books by this author, some I really liked and some that were ok. This book I just read I would say is good. It was an interesting story and I wanted to see what Norma and Jill would end up doing. The story does deal with domestic violence as the subject matter.
This was my first book by the author, and while I did enjoy the story it was very repetitive. Since I enjoyed the story line so much I would recommend this book to others. I enjoyed Norma's character especially, but I would have loved more back story on her as well as the other characters. This book was on the shorter side so I think expanding some on the characters was needed.
Overall, I would recommend and enjoyed this book
This was my first book by Catherine Ryan Hyde. It really kept my interest and I read over half of it the first night. I felt like I got to know the characters easily in this book. I’m looking forward to reading more of her books! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published December 2023.
As a great fan of Catherine Ryan Hyde's work I always look forward with anticipation to an exceptional read and, once again, I wasn't disappointed. I really like the fact that she includes that wonderful mix of young and older generations in her stories and she always portrays her main characters as mostly good and likeable people who are easy to identify with. Norma came across as a strong woman but nevertheless kind hearted and as honest as the day is long. Her dilemma in keeping a very serious secret whilst maintaining her own honesty and integrity was a main part of the book. There is domestic abuse, threat and a lot of food for thought in this story. I wondered how I might have coped with the burden that was put upon Norma and had to admire her for the way she handled a very morally challenging situation. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher For an ARC which I gladly and voluntarily review.
When a young woman goes missing, volunteer Norma Gallagher is called to join the search and rescue mission. With the help of her incredibly smart horse and two hounds, Norma tracks the girl to a cave and is stunned when Jill refuses to go back. Then she learns of Jill’s abusive boyfriend and reluctantly agrees to secretly deliver the girl to her frightened parents.
Norma has a rigid moral code, which makes the lie she’s keeping a weight on her chest, even though she knows from personal experience just how dangerous a man like Jill’s ex can be.
There are a lot of back-and-forth struggles over ethics in this novel, which makes for slow reading, though the subject is serious. I would have liked more action and less inner wavering, but that’s not to say this isn’t a good story.
Catherine Ryan Hyde often sets older and younger characters together with complex plots that teach important lessons. For me, this one fell a little flat.
“I voluntarily read an ARC of this book which the publisher provided via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.”
Thank you NetGalley and thank you to the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this one early.
Another good one from Catherine Ryan Hyde and I have read many of her books! While this book definitely kept me interested I wouldn’t put it at my fave one by her, the story touches on domestic violence, abuse and how the wheels of justice work. Bordering from what is right or wrong, truth or lies, this book touches on many subjects and while I mostly enjoyed it there were parts of the book that were somewhat repetitive! Will this stop me from reading others by CRH absolutely not but with. Early reading copy I need to read, review and most of all be honest in my review! So again it was good and touched on important subjects. Catherine Ryan Hyde tells a good story and j appreciates reading her books early in exchange for an honest review. She is a top fave author of mine.
.be sure and check this one out on publication day early December 2023.
What happens when a young girl goes missing after a fall out with her boyfriend. The locals set up groups to look for her, but does she want to found? She is found by Norma but asks her to tell anyone.
But they become friends more like mother and daughter.
They both have to keep a secret and as their friendship grows and their lives change for better.
I have enjoyed all of CRH’s books and this was no exception. This book however took a look at domestic violence and also the degrees of right and wrong. Choices these characters made were not always the best, but they had to live with their choices and the unintended consequences. CRH did a great job getting into the heads of the victims/survivors of domestic violence and developing the characters and their relationships with one another. I would definitely recommend this book.
My first book by Catherine Ryan Hyde (and not my last!). I liked the characters and the story’s pace. It made me think about what I would do in the same situation.
Another winning book by the great Catherine Ryan Hyde. This is book #13 by her and it grabbed me from the very first page. She’s such a great storyteller and I love all the characters in this book. I’m excited for her next book already! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published December 2023.
This was a powerful story about domestic abuse, justice, and one big lie. Jill is missing from a campsite and an abusive boyfriend. As the search and rescue team continues to look for Jill, the people in town have their own theories on what happened to Jill. Norma knows and has agreed to keep it a secret. It was a heartfelt book about making decision after decision that would bring complications and consequences years later. I loved Norma - she's more of a loner but a very wise woman. The characters in the book were very real and well-developed. Very good story that makes you wonder - if you were Norma, what would you do?
Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Norma is forced to make a difficult choice. Knowing nothing of the circumstances other than they are unforeseen. Touching on difficult topics, such as domestic violence, Ryan pulls on the heart strings while everyone just tries to do what’s right.
Review
Norma leads a simple life, living alone on her land with her horse and dogs, tending bar in town. But her passion is her volunteer work with the local search and rescue squad. She is called upon to help search for Jill, but there is something extra- Jill was seen being jerked around by her boyfriend shortly before she disappeared- could he have harmed her?
Norman searches and finds Jill, but Jill believes that if the boyfriend knows she is alive he will eventually kill her. Although it is against everything Norma believes in, she is convinced and delivers Jill to her parents, who will help her hide.
Time passes, and Norma learns that the boyfriend has been arrested and is to be tried for assaulting another woman. But he will also be tried for Jill's murder. What should Norma do- "out" this young woman who has built a new life or let a dangerous man be tried for a murder he didn't commit?
As usual, this is an excellent book from this author. My thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book, which will be released in December.
I count on Catherine Ryan Hyde for a reliably good read. This one is right in the middle, not my fave or least fave. It’s definitely a thinker, and got preachy at times. Good story, although Norma was not easy to connect with. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.
An interesting read about physical and emotional abuse and the effects it can have on the individual and children. Also explores moral dilemma regarding punishment and the crime. Catherine Ryan Hyde’s books are always fast paced and this book is no exception. You get personally invested in the characters. I am not sure the title fits the book.
You can always rely on Catherine Ryan Howard for her compelling storytelling and she has a real talent for breathing life into the distinctive vibrant characters she creates that pulsate with authenticity. She develops them, driving them through a narrative of profound and thought provoking themes, which here are darker than usual, but which she approaches with sensitivity and from multiple perspectives. There is the trademark inclusions of animals, Norma is a solitary person, perhaps only close to Betty at the local bar where she works, living with her dogs and horse, and is a search and rescue volunteer. She may not be the most approachable person in the world, but she is a woman with a good heart and her own secrets.
A young woman, Jill Moss, has gone missing close to the Utah-Arizona border. Norma sets off, and happens to find a terrified Jill in a cave, having run away from her abusive boyfriend, Jake Willis, believing he will kill her. All of this places Norma in a quandry, what is she to do? It is this that serves as the crux of the novel that explores the nature of abuse, those who suffer it, the perpetrators and their impact, how they may have become abusers, how such toxic behaviours might be addressed, and those that support the abused. Norma chooses to help Jill, making a decision that can be seen to be coming from a good place, she lies to protect Jill, her deception and secret is to have wide ranging and long term repercussions.
The author highlights the moral and ethical dilemmas of Norma's acts, the shortfalls of the legal system and the difficulties of attaining any form of justice. This is a wonderful, heartbreaking, dramatic, and informative, if challenging read that I think a broad range of readers will appreciate and which I recommend. I am looking forward to the author's next read with great anticipation Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.
Catherine Ryan Hyde is not one to shy away from tough topics...In this case, it is domestic violence. The characters were so real and I felt so bad for them and I cared about what happened to them. I was also really proud of them and how brave they were, it really made me think about how lucky I am. I absolutely adored the way Norma delivers her wisdom and, as always, one of the best parts of the book is the way Catherine Ryan Hyde writes dialogue. The author also adds animals in her stories, usually dogs and horses and A Different Kind of Gone is no exception. I love how the author makes the animals characters as well.
What I especially liked about this story was how it focused on women helping women and how domestic violence doesn't just affect the victim but their children, extended family and friends as well. Even after the violence has stopped and the women and children flee, it reverberates throughout the family for years. The questions raised in this story really made me think and I can't imagine what I would do if I were in this situation. Part of the story is also commentary on today's news networks, they report what people think and not what people know. As with most of this author's work, I will be thinking of this book for a very long time to come. The book is powerful, poignant, thought-provoking and absorbing, I read it in a couple of sittings. This one deserves all the stars.
I was so excited to see the author had put out a new book, I have read over 20 of her books and have loved them all. She has a way of taking a hard subject and make it something everyone needs to know about.
This story is about domestic violence, the damage it will cause, and the lingering fear it instills, and the repercussions of what will happen if truths are not told.
Nora a middle age woman works part time for a search and rescue team, and is sent out to look for a missing young woman, who was at a campsite with her boyfriend, who reportedly manhandled her.
She ends up finding her, but is persuaded by the victim to not report it, fearing her boyfriend will find her. Helping her caused a lot of issues which you will read about in the book, to not only themselves but others in the story.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for a copy of this book.
Catherine Ryan Hyde does it again! I am always so into her character development and all of her stories are so different, yet often related to some very relevant issue of the times. Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy-- I enjoyed these characters so very much.
Another great bookby this author. Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy. Highly recommend any books by Catherine Ryan Hyde.
