I struggled to get into The Same Country from the start. I had real trouble with the narrator's voice, as I wasn't entirely sure what the author was going for here. I felt disconnected the entire time, even though the main character was meant to be the one person I as the reader did feel a connection to. I couldn't summon any emotions as she returned to her home town. I'm really disappointed by this because the premise sounded very intriguing.
Thanks to NetGalley and Legend Press for the opportunity to trad The Same Country by Carole Burns. I often find books that resonate with me through NetGalley; books by authors previously unknown by me. Such is the case of The Same Country by Carole Burns. Ms. Burns has written an important book reflective of this country now, as well as in the not so distant past.
This was not an author I was familiar with but was drawn in by the synopsis and boy I am glad I was.
This is a really powerful novel, ripped from the headlines of America today and a stunning portrayal of a deeply personal novel.
Part detective story, part coming of age with some romance thrown in, this novel defies categorisation in the best possible way.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
