Thanks so much for the opportunity to read The Last Resort!

Great page turner, and very gripping. Encapsulating and tense!
One of them books you can’t rest until you’ve finished it and know what happens. So glad I chose this as my next read. Heidi never disappoints!

I really enjoyed this! I love multiple points of view and also timelines going back and forward, I think it really adds to the story. It enhances the perspective when the story is told from differing points of view, you get to know the motivations of the characters. Lots of surprises in this one and I loved the ending.

Great storyline with relationships going wrong, hidden pasts and crime combined. Very readable, with unexpected twists and turns.

Cleverly written with the intertwining tales and how nothing can be seen as a coincidence. The characters were well developed and you felt for them all and wanted resolution for a situation which felt futile.

A clever plot..but...
This psychological thriller has a few key elements including family breakups, suspected infidelity and gaslighting and also legal injustice. For that I would have given It 4 stars.
However, the story has two distinct timelines, one set a few day in August and the other starting mid February that moves forward a few weeks at a time until reaching August. The book alternates between these two settings. This is then complicated by the story being told through the eyes of different characters who appear in both timelines. This can cause confusion for some readers and it certainly did for this reader and spoilt my enjoyment of the book. There is also a timescale issue with a dog that disappeared in February, was suddenly back in August and eventually an explanation appears in June or July.

Perks does it again; another brilliant psychological thriller!

At first, I found Erin just so unreliable. She seemed completely delusional and I felt like she couldn't be trusted. But I also felt like Will was hiding something, causing Erin to feel and think the way she did.

Maggie, the therapist, is hiding her own secrets that slowly unravel as the story goes on. And the twist, well I just didn't expect it.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Erin Harding has been in a hit and run accident, and everyone is a suspect. Erin’s life was seemingly perfect, up until six months ago. She is a wife and mother, but for some reason, everything seems to go downhill, resulting in Erin and her husband seeking counselling to get them through whatever it is that’s happened, because Erin’s husband has no idea how they’ve reached this place of darkness.

I really liked this book. We read from multiple points of view throughout, and from 6 months previously, including sessions with the counsellor, so we slowly find out exactly what’s happened in Erin’s life. The tension is perfectly fed to us throughout, and really made the story perfect. There were lots of red herrings, and many twists and turns you will not see coming.

Will and Erin are happily married with a young daughter and a much loved pet dog. On Valentines Day Will brings Erin a necklace, an unusual occurrence and when he tries to place it around her neck, Erin flinches. There is seemingly no reason for this but Erin is suddenly fearful of Will. Then when their dog Coco goes missing, she blames Will. Her mistrust of her husband escalates and she begins to blame him unreasonably for all sorts of things and before long their marriage is in trouble. A couples therapist is recommended and they begin to see Maggie each Monday. Maggie has her own demons and when they begin to overlap into Will and Erin’s marriage, there seems little hope for their future. As this well woven story develops, long buried secrets are revealed that have far reaching consequences. Can anyone survive the blame and hurt that escalates in every chapter? A clever psychological thriller that has a twist towards the end that brings answers.

I found this to be a decent family drama, told from various POV and over various timelines.

A woman is the victim of a hit and run and her husband turns up at the hospital in the early hours, well groomed and explaining that he and his wife have been having problems.

There are a variety of characters, all with their own issues and the plot is well structured with many red herrings.

It’s an easy read and I’m grateful to NetGalley and Random House, Cornerstone for the opportunity to preview.

This novel was okay. The characters I couldn't connect with in this genre. I think I need something with more meaning as this felt very materialistic.

An easy and compelling read.

This is the one couple’s therapy you will want to attend! A complex relationship is put to the ultimate test when the woman becomes a victim of an accident (or is it?)
So good you won’t be able to stop turning the pages!

I really enjoyed this and the ending took me by surprise. Even though I had started to guess who it might be, it turned out to be totally different. I read this in one sitting and it kept me hooked right to the very end.

Two people.
Two sides of the story.
Whose do you trust?

Book Review - ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

My first by Heidi Perks but won’t be my last.

Erin and Will start having weekly sessions with therapist Maggie when their marriage is in trouble. However, Maggie soon realises there could be a link between the couple and a tragic event in her past.

I enjoyed this pacy thriller which pulled me in from the start. The chapters move between past and present seamlessly, which is hard to do well but it really works for this story.

My reason for 3.5 rather than 4 stars is because I saw the twist coming, unfortunately.

Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"The Last Resort" by Heidi Perks is a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that explores the intricacies of relationships and the mysteries hidden within them. The story revolves around Erin and Will, a married couple seeking therapy to repair the growing rift in their marriage. Their therapist, Maggie, finds herself caught in the middle of their conflicting accounts, struggling to decipher whose version of the truth to believe.

Perks skilfully builds tension and suspense, keeping readers guessing about the real dynamics of Erin and Will's marriage and the secrets they hold. The narrative unfolds from multiple perspectives, offering a nuanced and layered portrayal of the characters. Each chapter reveals more about their complex lives and motivations, creating a sense of unease and suspicion.

The plot takes a thrilling turn when Erin is involved in a hit-and-run accident, leaving her in critical condition. The story then becomes a race against time to uncover the truth behind the incident, as the possibility of foul play looms large.

Heidi Perks excels in creating an atmosphere of paranoia and mistrust, making it challenging for readers to discern who is trustworthy and who isn't. As the layers of deception unravel, the novel keeps you on the edge of your seat, eagerly turning pages to uncover the shocking truth.

"The Last Resort" is a masterfully crafted psychological thriller that will keep you hooked until the very last page, with its cleverly woven plot, well-drawn characters, and a suspenseful atmosphere that lingers long after the final chapter.
