I really enjoyed the latest book by Heidi Perks - in fact I read it in one day on my holiday.
Erin and her husband are having marriage issues and agree to visit a counsellor, Maggie, to resolve their problems. Deeply disturbing, it was difficult to see the truth in the stories they are telling, and Maggie finds it hard to resolve their problems.
When Erin is found at the side of the woods in the middle of the night, a victim of an apparent hit and run, it becomes clear that all has not been what it seems.
What a book! Unputdownable, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This is fine, middle of the road thriller. It didn't make me rush to pick up where I left off but would do well as a plane or beach read. The central story and timeline jumps aren't truly original but they held my interest. (Copy received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review)

As soon as I started reading The Last Resort, I knew I was going to love it! I have enjoyed Heidi Perks’ other novels too so was excited about reading this one, which is now my favourite. It’s an intriguing, multi-layered thriller/family drama and I read it quickly as I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Erin and Will have turned to therapist Maggie to help them with the problems they are facing in their previously happy marriage. As their relationship disintegrates, we learn that nothing is quite what it seems and Maggie becomes more involved in her clients’ lives than she has ever allowed herself to be.
This book kept me on my toes. It’s an exciting, well-written and fast-paced read. Five stars!

Erin and Will are attending couples counselling as their marriage has begun to go downhill.
Erin seems to be suffering from delusions or maybe Will is gaslighting her.
As the story develops, it appears that they have more in common with Maggie, their counsellor, than any of them could think.
A good twisty plot to the end.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Penguin Publishing for the chance to read and review this book

This was my second book by Heidi Perks, so I am new to this author. However, when I saw The Last Resort was available for review, I could not wait to get my hands on it. This book grabs your attention the moment you open it and refuses to let go before you reach the very last page. I raced through this book and loved every moment. When you reach for The Last Resort you can expect a gripping read that will leave you questioning the characters and never knowing for sure who is telling the truth. This is a five-star read you will not want to miss.
A huge thank you to Penguin Random House South Africa for this review copy!
Heidi Perks crafts a tale that draws you into the lives of her characters with this book and while you are eager to pick sides you are left doubting who you should trust. The character’s emotions draw you in and you are left wanting to interfere. I found myself eager to tell Erin not to believe a word Will was saying. Initially, Maggie left me a little confused – I was not sure what her role was. Yet as you keep reading all is revealed.
When Erin and Will start couples therapy, Maggie, their therapist has no idea who is telling the truth. She battles to trust this couple and believes they may be messing with her. However, when Erin is involved in a hit-and-run that lands her in hospital a hunt for the truth starts that unravels everything.
I loved the uncertainty of this story. I could not figure out who to trust. While on the surface it seems to be a classic case of gaslighting, the surprise that awaits you will leave your head spinning.
The characters in this book were perfectly suited to the story. Erin steals your heart with her insecurity one moment while the next you cannot help but think that Will is right and that the woman has lost her mind. I found myself caught up in Erin's thoughts and could not help disliking Will. This man left me convinced that something was not right. I loved the twists in this book – I did not see them coming at all.
I have not been handing out five-star reviews very easily this year. I find the more I read the more I expect from the books I do read – but The Last Resort had everything required to make it a fantastic read – so yes – this one got a five-star rating from me. It’s a brilliant read.
If you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing, while forcing you to pick sides and then changing your mind just when you think you have it all figured out, then this is the book for you. I cannot recommend this one highly enough. It is a fabulous read. I have two more Heidi Perks books on my TBR shelf and I cannot wait to make time for them.

I just knew something fishy was going on with that counselor!! The book was set go nicely from two characters and ties nicely together at the end. The reader really starts to question the sanity of Erin. Not my favorite by her but still good.

This was a real page turner, the story of a couple who start having marital issues and their marriage counsellor who finds herself getting more involved than she should.
I liked the way their stories came together to a satisfying ending, how the past blended into the present. I found it heard to put down and would happily read more by this author.

I am an avid fan of Perks and I was fortunate enough to get an early copy of her latest book.
As anticipated, I found the book to be an engaging and suspenseful read. The book is structured in a dual timeline with multiple perspectives, which could be challenging for some readers. However, despite the complexity of the plot, the author has managed to keep the story flowing smoothly.
I particularly enjoyed the deep layers of the characters and the plot, which kept me engaged throughout the book. The author has done an excellent job of creating various unreliable characters and building suspense around them. The ending was satisfying, and all loose ends were neatly tied up.
Although this book may not be my favourite from the author, I would still recommend it to fans of thrillers and unreliable characters. It is definitely worth the read. In fact, I would encourage readers to pre-order a copy today to avoid missing out on this gripping and addictive book!

Erin Harding the victim of a hit and run lies seriously ill in Intensive Care. Recently separated from husband Will he's one of the first to arrive at the hospital. What was she doing alone on the road near Harberry Woods in the middle of the night. Who was the anonymous male who was apparently driving past but didn't hang around until the emergency services arrived. The police have plenty of questions.
Differing stories, differing viewpoints, family, friends, colleagues and a marriage counsellor who gets more involved that she should. All of them had something to offer and all of them added an extra layer of intrigue.
Plenty of twists, a few red herrings, this one had my attention and kept me guessing right til the end. Definitely recommended.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy. I was under no obligation and all opinions expressed are my own.

First time I've read any books by Heidi Peake but definitely won't be the last! Was hooked from the start of this gripping thriller.
Will and Erin are married with a young daughter called Sadie but they are starting to have issues within their marriage and start to go to couples counselling.
Their therapist struggles to understand what exactly is going on in their relationship and is unsure who to trust.
Erin is a victim of a hit and run accident and it seems likely that it's someone she knows, but who?
Maggie, their therapist, is also on her own personal mission of uncovering the truth of what happened to her sister Lily who was murdered years ago.
Brilliant book with a great twist!

It’s been a while since I read a Heidi Perks novel, so when The Last Resort came up on Netgalley I was interested. I’m so pleased I did. An intriguing plot with complex characters which unfold gradually as you read the story, however it keeps you guessing with a number of twists which makes the read far from predictable. The Last Resort grabbed my interest from the start and retained it throughout to the point of being reluctant to put the book……Kindle……. down.
The writing style is easy to read rotating around the three main characters in different timelines which gradually get closer to present time and the truth as you near the end. The twists and turns, red herrings and emotions of the characters contribute to the gripping and believable read. I really enjoyed how the story developed between Erin and her husband Will and involving therapist Maggie who had her own demons and issues. Wonderfully written which keeps you thinking about the characters and plot even when not reading. Recommended, I suggest you start reading and see how it goes……..

Erin is in hospital after being involved in a hit and run accident. Her husband Will is at her bedside but, as the story unfolds, we wonder if Will is somehow involved. The story then goes back 6 months and we realise that Erin has become suspicious of her husband leading to a breakdown in their marriage. They seek marriage guidance and meet Maggie, a counsellor, and links between the couple and Maggie begin to emerge. An interesting and gripping story which left me unable to put it down, particularly towards the end when more twists and turns begin to appear. Great read…thanks!

Erin has been hit by a car and is in the hospital. Six months earlier, she and her husband are going through counselling as there is something not quite right in their marriage and relationship. It began the day their dog disappeared although Erin feels it was when Will was putting a necklace around her neck, for some reason she flinched and didn't quite know why. Maggie, their therapist, finds that she has one playing against the other, almost a game of “ he said, she said” and is not sure which one is telling the truth. Speaking of truth, Maggie has her own demons- her sister was murdered and the man jailed for it, who admitted his guilt, has asked to see her. She feels his reason for this is that his parole is coming up but she herself has her own secrets about what really happened that night. Who was really responsible and has Erin been deliberately hit - why was she near the woods so late at night?
A book that grabbed me from the start and didn't let go. You know the writing and plot are brilliant when you can't help but read that one more chapter and one more…… The writing style is calm and easy but with enough hidden tension to encourage the reader to try and learn what is happening. There are twists and red herrings and in some ways it is written like a domestic drama- especially in the counselling sessions when new information is found out about Erin and Wills relationship. Chapters are told in the different timelines and headed with one of the three main characters to give an all round point of view, very cleverly done. It's engrossing, it's gripping and it's one I wasn't quite sure how it was going to end. A twist and then a twist on a twist if that makes sense. A gripping thriller I thoroughly enjoyed.

I think this might be Heidi Perks' best book - it's tense and intriguing. (Though I'm not sure what the "last resort" of the title is referring to.)
Erin, a young mother, is in a coma in hospital, the victim of a hit and run. It soon transpires that this event has been the culmination of a pretty terrible six months for Erin, beginning with the mysterious disappearance of her beloved dog. Things have got strange; she's no longer sure she can trust her husband Will, though they've been happy in the past. He's denied all her accusations about his behaviour, though she's certain she's right. Couples counselling with therapist Maggie hasn't proved beneficial, and it turns out there's an unlooked-for connection with Maggie's own family history...
This was a cleverly plotted story which kept me guessing (though I did figure out the "twist" near the end). Erin's distress and confusion about experiences she can't explain or rationalise is well rendered; Maggie was perhaps a little less relatable, though it was certainly possible to understand her need for the truth.
Thanks for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.

When Erin starts to get uncomfortable feelings and flashbacks about her husband, her life spirals out of control. She had thought their life was perfect and she doesn’t even want him around her daughter anymore. It’s then that they both start sessions with Maggie, a relationship counsellor. This just opens another can of worms. In the end Erin just doesn’t know who she can trust.
I really enjoyed this story. The author has an engaging style of writing and their were some good twists. Highly recommended.

Two people with different perspectives. This was a real page turner of a book. It just kept giving. I really enjoyed it and would recommend

A great read that kept me guessing almost right to the end. I enjoyed the different points of view of Maggie and Erin. A well deserved five stars from me.

Thanks so much for the copy of the book to read and review.
An absolutely brilliant story that kept unfolding later by layer right until the end. The complexities of the characters kept the plot tight and riveting as it built momentum and intrigue around them until the end.
The whole story kept me second guessing who to trust and created tension throughout.
I really enjoyed reading .

Struggled with this book, so much so that I didn’t finish it.
The storyline is too slow for me to gel with the characters and to want to read more.
Disappointing.

A twisty thriller which flicks between the main characters- a couple who are seeking therapy following a couple of events which have created distrust of the husband and the therapist who still struggles to come to terms with the murder of her sister many years ago. Both have demons that are somehow linked- great twists loved it
