My daughter loved this audio book!! She listened to it every night, always trying to to squeeze an extra 5 minutes in!
The voices of all the characters were amazing! So many different accents for the many characters that it felt more like listening to a play on stage!
So having grown up with the Beano being written and published near me I was intrigued as to how it could be made into an audio book.
It was great, well read and the voices were super. Really brought the characters to life. The stories were not old fashioned as I thought they may be but bang up to date and really funny. Dennis is still up to the mischief he was when I was young!!!
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins Audio for the ARC Copy. This review is my own opinion.
This is a funny alternative to reading comic books and my 6 year old loved it! As always Dennis is up to mischief at school and giving his teachers a hard time. Lots of laugh out loud moments!
What a fantastic introduction to clasdic chatacters. Love the reference to other stories and other same world characters.
The narration is spot on. I loved these characters growing ip and this would be a joy to read to children
Due to the nature of some of the stories this might be more suitable for 8 years old plus audience. The length of the stories also makes it more appealing fir slightly older children. I really enjoyd all the stories and the narration. The bits in between the stories with jojes etc really hive this the extra edge.
Thank you so much to netgallery and the publisher for such an enjoyable audiobookHi. Highly recommended 5 star lisyen. Although be warned you will wish you kept your old comics.
Many decades ago, Beano, Dandy and Topper were my favourite comics. I looked forward to reading them every week and I was intrigued by the idea of them being narrated in audiobook format. To be honest, I didn’t think it would work. Much of the pleasure was in the graphics. I was wrong. The narration in each of the three stories is superb. The characters are brought vividly to life and I held images in my head as each story progressed. I’m in my 7 th decade and there were parts that made me laugh aloud. What a brilliant idea, well executed. Absolutely love this.
Beano Dennis & Gnasher by Craig Graham; Mike Stirling.
Narrated by Olivia Forrest; Sebastian Humphreys.
The Battle for Bash Street School – When mysterious new teachers arrive to lay down the law at notoriously naughty Bash Street School, Dennis, Gnasher and friends finally face a classroom test they simply can’t afford to fail.
The Abominable Snowmeance – When mysterious smelly footprints lead the gang to the school kitchen, they find themselves in a race against time to save their new best friend. The seasons are changing, and the fate of an entire species lies in their hands …
Attack of the Evil Veg – Run for your lives! An army of giant, carnivorous vegetables has sprouted to rule Beanotown! Can Dennis, Gnasher and friends root them out before they fall victim to the attack of the evil veg?!
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Olivia Forrest and Sebastian Humphreys were brilliant at bringing Dennis Gnasher Minnie Mandy Ruby JJ/Jemand Pie face/Peter to life. I forgot how much I enjoyed these. Definitely recommend. 5*.
I wasn't sure how a comic book would work as a an audio book but Olivia Forrest and Sebastian Humphreys did an excellent job of bringing Dennis and the gang to life, the stories are lot more relevant than when i was reading the comic but they still hold the magic of the old stories. I have to admit I loved the Attack of the Evil Veg, so funny. My only criticism would be I didn't like the Gnasher voice but its difficult to bring a character to life that isn't supposed to talk but only thinks things.
But i have enjoyed my trip down memory lane.
Some (read many) years ago I looked forward to reading the Beano comic every week, so the characters are very familiar to me. This set of three audio books has story lines bang up to date. So much going on, so well written and produced. Really brings the characters personalities alive. If you have/are a 7 to 12 year old child who likes (bad) puns and gunk and naughty characters, this is for you. If you are older then find familiar Beano Comic characters in new stories and in a non-print format. Put the head phones in, sit back and reminisce. Thank you to Harper Collins UK Audio and NetGalley for the audio ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
