Sheets has been on my to-read list for a long time, and I'm so glad to have the opportunity to finally read it. It ended up being a sweeter story rather than the spooky story I expected. I really liked the illustrations. While it does deal with grief and loss, it is not too heavy a story overall. There is levity, mostly in the form of Wendell's mayhem and embellishments. He was a really endearing character, and the book had such a heartwarming ending. It is a quick read, and I would definitely recommend it for teens or anyone trying to get into graphic novels.

wow wow wow this was such a sweet and surprisingly emotional story. I went in this blind and had no idea. I finally picked this up after my friends have raved about it and so glad that I did. The color pallet and illustrations are adorable. It is a emotional journey through loss, second chances, depression, and fear. I will say, pick this up. It is perfect for the spooky season.

What an absolutely beautiful graphic novel about grief. The illustrations were stunning and I thought the underlying messages were put across in a very delicate way

First of all, this book was so cute. All of the illustrations, ghosts and the friendships. The plot follows a young girl named Marjorie Glatt who feels like a ghost in her life. She is incharge of her family laundry business. She’s just having a bad time overall. Wendell is a ghost who died as a young child. He enters the human-world to figure out his (un)life. Wendell’s and Marjorie's life intersect when Wenell starts to accidentally sabotage Marjorie’s laundry business. So Marjorie's life is falling apart, she is trying to keep her family's business open and survive middle school. The way emotions are depicted in the characters' faces feel so human, even with the ghosts. This book is the perfect spooky, not spooky fall read.

Let me start by saying that the artwork in this comic-style story is amazing! I absolutely love the color way that was used. I personally am not a big fan of comic-style stories, but the artwork from this book was the best thing!

Graphic novels are my happy place, especially one that feels well rounded for all ages. This was super duper cute! The art for a graphic novel is incredibly detailed & the color pallet is *chefs kiss* !!
Happy I enjoyed the visuals, bc overall the plot was rushed & ultimately fell flat. Still excited to start the next one & see the adventure continue.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, & the publisher for the copy of the ebook in exchange for my honest review.

A girl. A grieving family. A laundry mat and a kid ghost.

“Sheets” by Brenna Thummler is about grief and friendship. Marjorie is struggling to run her family’s laundry mat after the sudden drowning of her mother. Her dad is locked in his room most days and the responsibilities for the family rest on Marjorie. The patrons to the laundry mat are rude and mean. And a neighbor has been sabotaging the laundry mat to steal the building and transform it into a yoga studio. Marjorie is already overwhelmed when a young ghost named Wendell blows into an open laundry room window.

Review: “Sheets” is a good read for any age. The graphic novel explores grief and friendship in an authentic and relatable way. My one critique is that the only family in town who stands up to Marjorie is a Black family and it is important that Black characters aren’t introduced to be used as tropes. This story doesn’t quite fall into the magical negro or mule trait, but I’ll report back after I read the second installment.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 rounded up

I liked the art, the beautiful illustrations and color palette in this graphic novel and I loved the difference between the two ‘worlds’! The characters were also very likeable. Wendell, the sheet wearing ghost, and Marjorie, the girl who’s running the family laundromat after her mom died last year, have an unusual but beautiful friendship together. I really enjoyed this quick, fun (but also a bit sad) graphic novel!

First off, thank you, Netgalley, for the free copy in exchange for a honest review! I was so happy to be able to receive this and then finally be able to read it. The story was a total delight!

THE COVER
When I first saw the cover, I was instantly captivated. The contrasting shapes, the values, and the colors were quite effectively used, and having one of the main characters right there, in the center, like the image on someone else’s retina, or a reflection on the camera lenses, definitely drew me in.

THE TITLE
One word titles just hit different. And this one, in particular, hides so much behind its layers. It’s, on the one hand, an image of the laundromat, and on the other, the very ghost (and its friends) on the cover.

THE PLOT
The story follows two characters, in particular, Marjorie, a young middle school girl, whose mom passed away a year ago, and Wendell, a ghost who has difficulty fitting in.

Marjorie lives together with her father and younger brother in a small house that also serves as a laundromat. She struggles to make ends meet, while both studying and running the business by herself. Her father doesn’t help much; in fact, he’s mostly absent, and the young girl needs to do everything in her power to keep the business running.

Things, however, take a bad turn once Mr.-I-don’t-remember-his-name steps in and sabotages Marjorie with every chance he gets. His interest is visible from the start: he wants the property for himself for free.

At the same time, a pesky little ghost enters the stage. He’s a rather playful spirit, a youth looking for friends, and who somehow ends up at the laundromat. Of course, he makes a mess of everything, and in the end, reveals himself to not just Marjorie, but the evil guy too.

THE EXECUTION
I absolutely loved the colors and the art style was friendly and the lines smooth. Every panel moved graciously on the page, allowing the reader to get sucked in the gutter and feel like a part of the story.

THE CHARACTERS
The characters seem believable and not only that, but the way they are written and drawn brings a lot to the table. Mr.-moustache-on-his-head is definitely going to drive you mad, and so will the first Karen you see. Wendell will surely make you long after your early years, when your only worry was what blanket to use for your new fort, and Marjorie’s father will definitely make you want to jump into the story and give him a good talk.

I found this charming and a very quick read!
I would have liked more nuanced characters and maybe some more time spent on the relationship between Marjorie and Wendell

This wasn't exactly what I expected, I thought was more for younger kids but its a full graphic novel. The art seemed well done, I just couldn't really get into the story.

A delight. An utter and total delight. With a beautiful colour palette and ghosts you will fall in love with, this tale of a teenager trying to keep her family's laundromats above water while her father sinks into depression and the local big businessman plots to put her out of business is made magical by a visit from a lonely ghost. I raced through it and will return to it time and time again, I' sure.

Thirteen year old Marjorie runs her family's launderette, as well as attending school full time. Mr Saubertuck is a local customer who is intent on trying to sabotage Marjorie's business. And Wendell is a ghost.
I absolutely sped through this graphic novel so quickly, I feel bad as that's almost a disservice to the author who clearly spent a lot of time and thought on these illustrations. I loved the story and the graphics made it super accessible and fun. It's made me want to read the next one in the series as well as pick up more graphic novels.

For review purposes - this copy didn't work on my Kindle or the Netgalley shelf on my phone so I picked up the physical copy from my local library.
