I have to preface this saying that Kit Rocha are among my favorite authors, and the Beyond series to this day is still one of my favorites; that being said, I couldn't connect with this book at all.
I liked the world we're in the story. It's captivating and your submerge immediately.
I liked the mythology with the dragons, and I adored the fantasy elements.
The romance was great, and I liked the FFM relationship, which I knew I was going to like because I love how KR writes romance... BUT separately, I didn't care about any of our main characters.
There are several POVs in this book, and I found myself not caring about any of them, which in the end took me off the story. It wasn't until the last 80% that I find myself enjoying the story again, which makes me wanna read the next book, but still, it's a shame it took more than half of the book to enjoy it which is the reason for the rating.
Still, I definitely recommend this one if you like fantasy and romance because it might not have (fully) worked for me, but it might be a favorite for you.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Consort of Fire is the first book in a fantasy romance series that involves a FFM (Female/Female/Male) relationship. At first, it took me a bit to get into the story and understand the world being created. However, once the story got going, I was hooked! I really loved the dynamic between Ash, Sachi, and Zanya. It was really refreshing that Ash wasn't jealous of Sachi and Zanya's relationship and that the side characters all accepted it without question as well. I also really loved that their personalities didn't change and they didn't do things that go against their character just because they were in love or falling in love etc. I also really liked a lot of the side characters and their personalities. I'm looking forward to seeing if their stories become part of the series or if they will only follow the main characters in this story. I did get a bit choked up at parts and there were parts that I genuinely wasn't expecting to happen but it was overall a very entertaining book. It is the beginning of a series but it doesn't end on a cliffhanger. The ending was satisfying but it does create the setting for the next book. I am interested in reading what happens next but the ending was good enough that I'm content with waiting until the next book is released.
Just FYI, I received an ARC via NetGalley, and this is my honest review of it.
The best thing I did was wait until I could read this book at once, because help I didn't want to stop.
High fantasy with a delicious worldbuilding, that even as it uses elements that are almost classics already, still feels fresh, without that feeling of "I've read this before".
Obviously, being Kit Rocha, it focuses more on the romance than in the world and the politics is tied to the romance. Not to mention the found family trope that is the authors' brand. It is here, with that same feeling of their previous series. And the sex scenes - yes, they are back, as good as always. And I'm really happy after reading a trouple with two women where one of them is the focus. And the way the relationships - between all three of them - was built was delicious.
And that's it. I usually devour everything Kit Rocha releases and that's nothing new, but I'm definetly waiting for the next book because I need more of this world and this characters.
(translated review - for obvious reasons)
For three thousand years, an ancient dragon god has protected the borders of the Sheltered Lands. In return he makes only one demand: every one hundred years, the mortal ruler must send their heir to serve as his consort… for as long as they can survive.
I think everyone needed therapy as per usual. I think we needed everyone to be a bit more fleshed out. The backstory for Zanya and Sachi should’ve been given more attention, and there should’ve been more details on the betrayer/the motivations for the royal family and why it’s so bad that they wanted to mine. I think there was a bit too much attention paid to the romance.
I wanted to love this more than I did. The premise is fantastic, but the execution ultimately fell flat for me. To be completely fair, this book had a lot of work to do - lots of world building, lots of characters, lots of information right off the bat, but unfortunately the pacing felt off to me. It wasn't until nearly 75-80% of the way into the book that things really began to pick up. Spicy scenes were fantastic though, as expected! I will definitely be reading the next installment, which I think will really be fantastic now that so many of the secrets and twists have come to light.
4/5⭐️
❤️ The spice oh god the spice 🔥🔥🔥🥵
❤️The build up tension between chartacters is so intense that a simple kiss becomes almost erotic. Loved it! 👌🏼
❤️ many examples of courage and strong love despite the many trials in life
❤️ I liked the fact that the characters were different gods than we are not used to seeing. The authors have been very creative.
❤️ the fantasy world building has a lot of potential
❤️&❌ There is not really a setting at first. It was really confusing. You are, for the first few pages, in an unknown world without much explanations. The world building happens as the story progresses. I still liked it since I was very curious to be thrown into this unknown world
❌ As much as I liked the spice, towards the middle of the story the sex took over everything and the plot took a hit.
❌ the ending was a bit confusing. I more or less liked it.
The writing felt over-narrated, which sets up distance between me and the characters and makes it hard for me to focus. I personally didn't connect and wasn't interested in the story.
Amazing cover!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC.
FFM - Fantasy - Slow Burn - First in Series
There is a lot of world building that takes place in a new series. This is no exception. A ton of information is given for you to store and sift through.
The story didn't keep my attention the whole way thru. It wasn't until the 'poly' portion and beyond that I was actually hooked.
I really liked the characters and how they were portrayed. It will be interesting to see how the future books will play out.

Fantasy, love triangle, why choose, not one but TWO strong FMC...what more could someone ask for? The way Ash fell for Sachi so quickly was refreshing to see in such a domineering and dark MMC as him. I think it is very difficult to portray a love trio such as this one without the reader feeling a sense of jealousy toward one of the characters involved. However, I never once felt that here. The connections between all three characters was magnificent and well executed. The twist toward the end when we learn not one, but two insane pieces of information about the FMCs had me in a chokehold. The ending was just enough to make me feel satisfied with the story and also excited to see what comes next.
What a fun and steamy read! I loved the world-building that the authors clearly took a lot of time and care with, as well as the characters. Obviously the main characters were well-drawn and I liked watching them evolve over the course of the book, but the side characters were also interesting. Hopefully they will be the stars of future books? This was a great start to a new series and I'm really excited to see where they take the plot from here, especially after the SPOILER reveal at the end of book 1.
A fabulous beginning to this new series which sees these authors leaving behind a dystopian setting and taking on the challenges of a fantasy world. In terms of world building definitely a success as we get fully immersed in landscapes and a society that is heavily tied to the Gods .
A pact was made that every one hundred years a member of the royal family would become the Consort of Ash, the Dragon and this time it's the turn of Sachi but she's not exactly the Princess that the Gods expected. With secrets of her own and a mission that definitely doesn't promise peace !
Ok I loved the previous works by this duo and was so happy to see them taking on a fantasy romance and yes this is a romance. There's very little action and the real story here revolves around passion and a love that can only come with complete trust. If you don't enjoy the idea of a more open relationship then perhaps this might not entirely be for you however Sachi and Zanya truly love each other and Ash is desperate for love. I was totally surprised by just how much he wanted romance and love, this possessive, powerful male will truly do anything for Sachi. The authors could have made either him or Zanya the third wheel but no and I admit it's more about Sachis pleasure than anyone else's. It makes it more believable that Ash and Zanya love Sachi and as Ash and Zanya slowly take each other's measure a different dynamic is formed. Ok admittedly Zanya was my favourite character and I want a lot more of her ! There is a development in the latter part of this story that should hopefully allow for more action and a little less steam but I know some readers always want more. I'm intrigued by what is to come and look forward to the next instalment.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Thank you to Netgalley and Montlakefor providing me with a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"Consort of Fire " by Kit Rocha is an intense and dramatic story of two childhood best friends who find themselves embroiled in a war that predates their own existence. Sachi has been offered as consort to The Dragon, in order to keep peace between the old gods and the humans, and their lands.
Despite the initial unwariness from both sides, Sachi discovers that life with The Dragon is not as bad as she expected, and that Zanya has a place with her. Following the magical journey of all characters, we discover that The Dragon, Sachi and Zanya are not what they seem.
The book beautifully explores themes of love, self-discovery, and the transformative power of connection. Sachi and Zanies love for each other and their journey together with The Dragon is intense, dramatic and deeply love rooted.
Kit Rocha's writing draws you in deeply, embedding you in their world, with beautiful character and world descriptions. The characters are bold, witty, loving and generous throughout.
The author skillfully weaves together elements of romance, fantasy, and folklore, creating a captivating and emotional narrative.
This book is a must read for lovers of romance, fantasy, and everything inbetween.
Spice level - 5
Adventure-3
My engagement- 3. I found myself reading sections and zoning out with out realizing it into halfway down a page. It got super interesting towards the end!
Fantasy - 3
Overall, if you're just in it for the spice then this might be for you. The dragon element was not necessary. The gods didn't do anything for me and it all got wrapped up in a nice little bow. I dont think I would continue with this series. But thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a chance go read this in exchange for an honest review.
So good and so, so steamy!! Thanks so much @netgalley for the chance to review Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha. To appease a dragon god, a human is given to him as a consort. Sachi is the new consort, and she brings with her Zanya, her handmaid, bodyguard and lover. To break a curse placed upon Sachi, they have to kill the dragon….
Reverse harem, very exciting romantasy. I cannot wait for book 2!
Consort of Fire is quite the read! There’s dragons (of course, instant draw), a spicy fmc, assassins, curses, and poly representation. What more could you want?!
I especially loved the multiple POVs and how two of the main characters are strong, bad ass women.
The initial blurb didn’t feel the most original to me as I feel like I’ve read fantasy books with the same premise. I was lucky to receive the ARC and did enjoy it! It’s not exactly the type of fantasy book I normally gravitate to as it was more on the smutty side. I think I lot of Romantasy readers will love this one.
Romantasy writers could take a page from Kit Rocha's handbook on how to write sexy fantasy that feels different from most other romantasy books out there right now. I've been a Kit Rocha fan since the Beyond series, and here in Consort of Fire, their world-building is on-point as usual--the tour through the land is a great way to world-build. I'm intrigued by all the characters, though I felt that Sachi, as one of the main characters, isn't quite as developed as Zanya and Ash were. This one is relatively low-angst, but the potential for more is there in subsequent books. Will definitely be following this series!
Thanks to Montlake and NetGalley for the ARC.
I really enjoyed this book the first of a new series.
It is full of fantasy and romance with plenty of adventure and Great characters.
I loved the three main leads they all gave something to the story and each other and I’m sure this will progress even more in the upcoming books.
There is plenty to enjoy if you like your romance with a touch of fantasy and dragons plenty of heated moments in this newly loving throuple then this is the book for you
Thank you Netgalley for a copy for an honest review
Love the adventure that Sachi needs to go on to take out the Dragon Lord.
Love all the characters especially the dragon lord who happens to be misjudged.
The interaction between Sachi and the Dragon Lord is adorable.
rating: 3.5/4 stars out of 5
spice: 4/5 hot hot hot
a fantasy romance with an emphasis on romance ;)
MFF, Poly romance
Due to an agreement between the moral ruler and the god known as the Dragon, the mortal ruler must send their heir to serve as the dragon's consort in exchange for his protection. This time though, the mortal king has sent his "heir" with a mission- to kill the dragon god. The reader follows the story through the tri-POV of the Dragon/Ash, Princess Sachille, and her handmaid Zanya. Sachi has been trained to seduce and Zanya to kill to fulfill their duty because if they don't, the consequences will be life ending. Their mission becomes complicated when feelings and desires get in the way and they begin to see that what they have been taught to believe about the Dragon and the High Court of gods that rule them, may not be true.
This may be one of the spiciest books I've read that didn't have to come with a page of trigger warnings (there are still some TW content like references to abuse etc) but the romance was written full of enthusiastic consent from all parties which is *chefs kiss*. This book has great poly representation as well as handling the MFF relationship and sexualities of all characters in a way that is respectful and feels authentic.
While there is a LOT of spicy scenes (not complaining) there are still effective fighting scenes (Zanya is a badass) and a conflict/story line that kept me reading and excited for other future installments of this series. I also enjoyed the magic/gods system which reminded me of tarot cards: "The Lover", "The Wolf", "The Huntress" etc.
My main criticism would be that if you have read the From Blood and Ash prequel A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout, the similarities are a little much. A princess groomed from childhood to seduce and kill a dangerous god named Ash... who basically runs from her the first time he sees her... all because of a deal made between the mortal king and the god... and she ends up being *redacted bc spoiler*. All that to say I still enjoyed reading it because there were plenty of unique elements and it is much spicier in my opinion.
And a last note because this was something I was worried about- no they don't do it while he's a dragon. :)
I've read Rocha's "Beyond" series and was really curious to read this as it seemed very different. It was. Yes, the setting is different, more like a "traditional" fantasy series. There is a huge cast of characters and a whole lot of world building going on. While I do love a larger cast and appreciate the world building, there was so much of it that it dragged the story down for me. The pacing was so slow unlike previous Rocha books. The actually story seemed weighed down by all the other elements. I am hoping the next installment with have more focus on the actual story.
