Yet another visit to this world of books, where the plots are interrupted by puzzles – or is it the other way round? Here there is no real worry that the story will detract from the brain-training, for it's a simple enough one. Your character is a space gardener or something, and so the first chapter of this is you helping a robin clean up a greenhouse environment, the next has you help a vegetable grower with "their" composting, and the third turns you into something the size of an earwig. Each chapter leads to similar puzzles to do – not tasks that repeat and get recycled within a chapter, but certainly gain and gain in familiarity the further you go through these pages. Not even the one unique-seeming one will keep an intelligent child occupied too long, meaning this is a quickly-done, and potentially done-once-only kind of volume. But I like the way these stories cram just enough detail into the answers of the posers, meaning you don't see the full plot if you don't work out coded messages and solve other problems. Once again the scenario here isn't exactly strong, but that way you lose nothing by getting stuck into word-searches, sudoku and maths tasks. So for all the low-level storytelling, this gets four stars once again.
Wow, what I can I say about this book apart from I loved it! Such a fun and creative way to inspire maths and literacy. This book had puzzle solving as well as an important eco message, not only that it's made from responsibly sourced paper and vegetable-based ink, it can also be recycled after use. Part of a collection of 12 books, your children are going to love reading the story and completing the quest. Plus at the end you can log onto the website with the secret password for even more suprises. This is something I will definitely be recommending to my students and parents!
