This book was fun! I always love everything I read from Susannah Nix - you know you're in for a great time when you pick up one of her novels!! I didn't realize when I started this one that it's loosely related to the King Family series (the Ice cream covered books), but Gareth works in the fire station that Ryan is the captain at, so he makes appearances - which I just adore! The King Family and the Creamery also get mentions. (you definitely don't need to have read that series first, but it will make those mentions mean more to you)
I totally love small town romances, and Nix writes some of the very best - Crowder is one of my favourite of the small towns around. I loved going back there! Familiar faces everywhere, but this is a new series in a familiar town. Casey is a bookworm who works in a gym (admin jobs, which has never been a fulfilling career), and lives with her brother and two of his best friends. She has decided that finally, at 28, she's going to take care of that pesky v-card problem, and that her roommate and brother's best friend Gareth is going to be the one to help her out. When he politely declines, she gets another friend to set her up on a series of blind dates - which Gareth takes offence to, and he ends up taking the job after all. But... he has a lot of his own rules and conditions, since he won't just "take" it.
Watching the dynamic between the pair, and keeping everything secret from the brother (who again - is their roommate as well and he can't upset his bestie), plus when he decides she needs to take up training for the Highland Games that he loves participating in? Such a great storyline and definitely another great Nix novel that I recommend to all!
I received an advance review copy from NetGalley and Author Collective 20, and this is my honest feedback.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for the chance to review an ARC of Kilt to Order. This is my honest review of the book.
Kilt to Order by Susannah Nix was a fun, light romantic comedy. The story centers around Casey a book nerd and her brother's best friend Gareth. Gareth and Casey are roommates who live together with her brother Ozzy and another friend Darius. Casey is in her 20s and has rarely dated and never gone beyond kissing. When she decides she wants more experience and practice, she goes to Gareth as someone she trusts to help her. Gareth decides to help her out rather than her finding a random person. Things start to heat up between them and they realize they are falling for each other.
The story was a really fast read. The story was enjoyable and I loved the characters. Casey was so relatable and rather shy about her non-existent love life. She begins to grow as she gets comfortable with Gareth. Gareth is sweet and very protective of Casey. He obviously is attracted to her, but has such a low opinion of what he can provide in a relationship, that he doesn't even consider the possibility. Both characters bring out the best in each other. I loved reading a romance with some of my favorite tropes: friends to lovers, forced proximity, falling for brother's best friend. I also enjoyed that Casey and Gareth actually communicated what they were feeling and what they needed. While there was some angst, they both grew enough to tell each other what they needed.
The side characters were also great. Ozzy and Darius had the most focus outside of the main couple. Honestly, I would've loved more scenes with Darius. He was so fun, quiet, and supportive of the characters. Ozzy was the obnoxious older brother, but when his sister was in a pinch he was there for her.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would definitely read more stories by this author.
I have really enjoyed this author in the past, and was really excited about the description of this book. While the plot in the storyline were decent, I had some other issues with the book. One major issue was the title and the cover. There is one instance of men wearing kilts in this book, and it happens very early, it’s not a massive theme, it isn’t mentioned that much, so I have no idea why the book is titled with kilts and has pictures of kilts on the front cover. I think the characters are cute and I do love the relationship that comes to be from the story. The notion of needing s3x lessons from a friend feels a little cringey, and it came off that way in the writing. Scenes had weird things, (“navel tonguing”) and phrases used or so cheesy. The book felt like it wrapped up around 75% but then something else happened - not spoiling it - and then massive emotional strides happen. The book felt like it was just reaching too far and it was a little too forced. I needed more depth to the story and the characters besides what was just randomly thrown in at times. Somehow it didn’t feel entirely genuine, authentic and just felt like a very surface level attempt at depth. Overall still a cute storyline but could’ve been so much better. 3.25⭐️, 3🌶
5⭐️ bc this book made me smile and reminded me why I like reading romance so much
“You know what this is? It’s one of those stories where the shy wallflower asks a notorious rake to give her sex lessons so she can learn to seduce someone else! It’s a Lisa Kleypas novel!”
“They’ve all written books like that. It’s a popular trope, but my life is not a historical romance and Gareth is no Derek Craven.”
No, Gareth isn’t a Derek Craven, he’s better- he’s a Sebastian Lord St Vincent with his foot warming bricks. IFYKYK! And I was here for every moment of it!
Casey is a 28 book loving year old virgin who lives with her brother Ozzy and his two best friends Gareth (a firefighter) and Darius and a rescued rabbit named Mr Twinkletoes. When she decides it’s time (with the help of her best friend and cousin) to rid herself of her virginity after a disastrously cringy date, Gareth seems like a safe choice to help. Despite his initial reluctance, he agrees. When he realizes part of the problem is her confidence he sets about ensuring she knows how much he wants her. No, his magic dick doesn’t fix her (like in some romances 🙄). He actually puts the time and effort into helping her feel more confident. What ensues is a sweet AND Spicy friends to lovers low angst story I had to make myself put down so I could get some sleep. Oh! And did I mention men in kilts?!
It’s always a delight to read a book you truly enjoy by a new to you author, AND discover they’ve got a back catalog you can dive into! I’ll be adding the rest of Susannah’s books to my TBR list. Fingers crossed Ozzy and Darius get books too!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
Kilt to Order by Susannah Nix is sunshine, rainbow, rainy days and warm cup of coffee in winter rolled and bound together with beautiful writing. It is such an adorable comfort read that made me smile and swoon and melt in a poodle of sweetest feels. But it also has deep feels those tug at my heart in just the right kind of way. Gareth is heart fluttering panty melting book boyfriend material and Casey with her witty nerdy cute personality is my new best friend.
Casey has to get rid of her virginity but her awesome awkward nervousness is a major obstacle. So her friends give her a suggestion. To ask her roommate and her brother’s best friend and her good friend Gareth to help her. Because he is sex appeal personified. Can they keep it unattached friends with benefits?
God this book made me feel so good. That's the best part. All my stress just went away and I was feeling fluffy and relaxed and having such a damn good time! Casey is my soul sister..I mean a romance book nerd who loves reading more than anything, who loves to organize and plan, who is shy to put herself out to dating pool, who loves freely and openly..she is a heroine I love so so much! She may be innocent and sweet but her compassion makes her understand Gareth's past and emotional baggage at a deep level. Gareth is such a good man and it made me so sad that he let his past mistakes and useless people from her past dictate his present. He still has a lot of guilt and feeling of worthlessness and that makes him believe that he is not good for Casey in long term. He is so caring and protective of her and even before Casey's insane proposal..he watched over her. This proposal just brought his desires to surface. Now technically they are forbidden and their easy camaraderie made it hard to dissociate the passion from emotions. But I loved how this was very low on drama. No agonizing chapters after chapter where they try to ignore their feels. It was definitely all about the build up. They are so swoony together. Their friendship is solid and that was a perfect base for love. Slowly the deep feelings crept in and the process was everything. The chemistry was perfect slow burn and I loved it. Gareth had to face his demons finally and Casey healed him. The full crew was so much fun. Gareth was an amazing combination of charming and sizzling hot..( pun intended because he is a firefighter, someone help me put out the fire!) But Casey was his perfect match too.
I reviewed an early copy voluntarily through Netgalley
🔹 You need to stop apologizing for being yourself.
Yourself is awesome. It's not something you should apologize for, ever.🔹
First, I would like to thank netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this story in advance!
☀️Casey is a very relatable character
in which I’ve seen myself under many aspects . She is a bookenerd with a bookstagram account , who at 28 years old is still a virgin and
never had a boyfriend. And it is precisely this reasons that she feels "wrong" compared to society's standards , has low self consideration and becomes anxious around other men.
Garreth, on the other hand, has become my new bookish crush: he is kind ,sweet and thanks to his difficult past has difficulty opening up and bonding with others.
☀️These two together are adorable:I loved watching their friendship evolve into something that allowed them both to grow. Garreth did everything he could to raise Casey's self-confidence , make her realize that there was nothing wrong with her and that she was worthy of being loved. Casey, instead, was able to give Garreth the support he had always lacked , the strength to face his own demons and then giving him a safe place to overcome them.
☀️Another element I loved was the found family: not only the one with Garreth and Casey's roommates, but also the one formed by the firefighters family with Garreth works. And I honestly can't wait to find out more about it in future books!
💫What I loved about the author was her ability to deal with current and important issues in a detailed manner and to include impactful quotes without making them heavy-handed. Kilt to Order is a funny, exciting story , with a cast of characters that warmed my heart and that nerdy touch made of references to TV series, books and Taylor Swift that I loved. But it's also a letter to all the people who feel wrong just because they don't follow society's standards by making them realize that it's okay to be themselves.
💫 Bonus point: the constant mentions of Dickens' books who is one of my favorite authors!
🔹 Don't ever be sorry for telling me how
you feel. 🔹
Susannah Nix does it again with another amazing friends to lovers book. Set in the same town of Crowder, Texas as in the King family trilogy this book is between Gareth and Casey. In this story of the heroin, trying to gain sexual experience she goes to one of her best friends, and also notorious “player” Gareth who is afraid of commitment, as things start to develop between them sexually they both realize that they have feeling’s involved but keep them to themselves because of their agreement to not let this ruin their friendship. But as the story goes on and we learn of past traumas that occurred to Gareth they fight thought them together and come out stronger and realize that this is a relationship that they can no longer fight. All in all it was a beautiful book between a broken hero and a heroin without any self confidence that will leave you with a smile on your face.
This was adorable. I’m not usually into just straight romance with no real plot besides the relationship but this book might be a gateway drug into the world of romance for me. Plus it was HOT.
Nix is the master magician of creating characters that you can visualize in real life. She’s a master at building angst and feelings and romance that leaves us readers swooning every time. Great one!
❤️❤️❤️ I loved every minute of Kilt to Order.❤️❤️❤️ Friends to lovers is not normally my go-to, but you put a hot firefighter in a kilt, and I'm toast. 😂😂
Casey lives with her big brother and his two best friends. Well, they're her friends, too, of course. Roommate Gareth is one of those friends, and Casey has always tried to keep her feelings for him platonic. After all, she's a loser when it comes to men. She's only ever kissed a guy once, and that was a decade ago. She wants to lose her V-card, and she's getting desperate. She's not even picky. Her bff suggests asking her roommate Gareth. He's hot, they're friends, and she can trust him.
Gareth is not a commitment kind of guy, and initially tells Casey no, but after he realizes that, if it's not him, it will be some douchebag who won't make the experience special for her, he agrees to it. The only problem is that he has more than platonic feelings for her. So initiate the sex lessons. 🙂
I love the banter between Casey and Gareth. It makes the soft and sweet moments between them so much more meaningful. I love watching their relationship evolve, fighting feelings they're "not supposed to have" for each other, and finally admitting it to themselves and to each other. Very well-written spicy scenes, too. 🌶️
I love all the banter with the secondary characters as well. This is the first book I've read by Susannah Nix - I need more!
The plot was interesting and well-paced, and I really liked how this one ended. I'm not really fond of huge breakups at the end that get resolved in ways that short-change characters I've gotten to know. This was not that. It was a very realistic, true-to-the-characters problem that was resolved in a healthy and satisfying way.
If you enjoy friends to lovers romances, firemen, anything Scottish, or just great banter, you will love this!
Thanks to Netgalley and the author for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
I loved this book. Friends/Room mates to lovers to? I absolutely loved both MCs. She was really smart and quirky. He was a swoon worthy hero, a handsome muscled firefighter who wanted to make it to the next level in his career. All the side characters in the book were well fleshed out, I got a sense of who each one was, at least on a surface level. I'm sure there is more to know. Here's hoping they get their own books.
This story had a few parts that were so funny I couldn't keep quiet. We aren't talking inner chuckles here.
The ending of the blind date early in the story absolutely had me laughing so loud my family had to know what was so funny. Brilliantly hilarious.
If you want a laugh out loud, swoony, sexy, romance with 2 lovable lead characters this is a must read.
This is my first book from this author and I was absolutely hooked from page one.
The story follows Casey the lead female lead who is a book nerd and Gareth her house mate and brothers best friend who also shares the house along with another one of his other friend's
The story was a fun easy read with added spice. The characters were all written very well and were relatable, they all came together very well and a very good friendship group. The chemistry was fire
I honestly can't wait to read more of this authors books
“...this hug feels monumental. It feels like saying I missed you times a thousand. It feels like a confession.”
This book was so cute! I loved the small town of Crowder, TX & the entire cast of characters & all their fun personalities. This is a series that I can’t wait for the continuation of! Kilt to Order follows Gareth & Casey who are roommates that set up an “arrangement” with each other. The story was paced so well & felt so cozy to get into.
Gareth was a total sweetheart & a complete softy underneath his playboy exterior. I really liked his backstory & appreciated that despite a setback, he was mature enough to be honest abt his feelings with Casey. I felt that his portion of their bargain fell into the background a bit, but it didn’t negatively impact their journey, but I would have liked to see more of it. I also loved Casey so much! Her naivete could have been annoying but her character was written so well! She was super cute & I loved that she was so passionate about her puffins & nature docs & her sneezing quirk was so humorous! Their relationship with each other was so natural & I loved when things started heating up between them when their lessons began - the spice was SPICING! Gareth was incredibly considerate of Casey & I admire that Casey took the reins when her confidence was boosted!
Another great thing that I enjoyed abt this book is that it’s pretty low drama. There IS something that does happen that did surprise me a bit, but I appreciated that it didn’t result in a 3rd act break up or miscommunication. The conflict was something that Gareth & Casey would be able to deal with over time, & the resolution felt natural.
I was a bit nervous in the beginning that the writing was going to be joke heavy & trying too hard to be funny, but it wasn’t. I don’t like pop culture references in books, & while this was teetering on the line for me, it ended up being fine, but there were times it could've been cringey. However, the book was funny when it needed to be & the humor gave the story a lighter feeling.
The one thing I had an issue with throughout the entirety of the story was the TITLE! I understand the series is called Kilt Trip which is cute bc it has to do with the group that participates in the Highland Games. But… Gareth isn’t Scottish & only wears a kilt in like two chapters? So, I’m not sure why the story is called Kilt to Order- which I’m assuming is a play on “built to order” but that phrase doesn’t have any correlation to anything that happened in the story! I was scratching my head the whole time trying to figure out how that came into play. Honestly, this is such a small point, but it bothered me so much & if I am missing something, someone pls let me know!
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book! It is such a cozy read & so sweet. I love the idiots in love trope & if you do too, I think this is a book you should pick up! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series & see who ends up with who!
Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
Let me just say - I love a good brothers best friend romance. This has all the tropes: friends to lovers, brother’s best friend, and forced proximity (roommates). It was a cute book! I loved the idea of it, but I’m a bit sad that the Highland Games weren’t incorporated as much. I really think that could have made this just a little bit more. Overall a good cute read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Author Collective 20 for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
OK, I can't wait for more in the Kilt Trip series! Loved this friends to lovers story between a hot firefighter/Highland Games athlete and his best friend's sister (who loves a romance book!). Scotland and books are my two forever loves so this was perfect for me and I started recommending it to my Outlander-loving friends before I even finished. I have a long list of highlights in my e-ARC and can see myself reading this again.
I really tried to read this one, but it was a DNF for me. It's featured as a romcom, but there was too much "com" and not enough "rom" in the beginning. Casey comes across as TSTL (way beyond just accident-prone) and the problems on her first date were too unrealistic and gross to be funny. First, she gets margaritas spilled all over her white t-shirt making it see-through. Then she leans into kiss her date and sneezes in his mouth, ending up banging her head and getting a black eye. I read a little into Casey and Gareth's relationship to see if it improved, but I was just bored by the muscle-man-hides-his-education trope. Usually I'm a big fan of Susannah Nix, but this one just wasn't for me.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Coming out on 25th July
I thoroughly enjoy this book. Gareth is the walking definition of a cinnamon roll. I really enjoy the dynamic between Gareth and Casey. The communication in this book is really really good. The writing is easy to suck you in. I had such a good time giggling and blushing with Gareth.
Casey is feeling societal pressure to lose her virginity, but she hasn't had the opportunity to do so. She decides to take matters into her own hands and enlists the help of her roommate, Gareth, who happens to be her brother's best friend and a firefighter tired of casual encounters. As Casey and Gareth embark on this arrangement, it's likely that their friendship and emotional connection will deepen over time. They may start to develop feelings for each other beyond their initial arrangement. Navigating their evolving relationship can be a challenge as they try to balance their desires, expectations, and the potential risks involved. As they explore their feelings, it's important for Casey and Gareth to be honest with each other about their emotions, boundaries, and intentions.
The themes of self-discovery, friendship, and romance make for an engaging read. If there are more books in the series involving Casey's brother and Darius, it could be interesting to see how their stories unfold.
I adore Susannah Nix's King Creamery series. I requested this book as soon as it popped up in NetGalley without ever having read the blurb, This book was absolutely delightful and brings the reader back to Crowder Texas and the King Creamery-verse.
Casey is a 28 year old awkward bookworm who is tired of being a virgin. She has no experience with men (other than that one time she turned a boy down in 10th grade.) She's ready to just get it over with and move on but gets the sneezes every time she's nervous. Gareth is a fireman who's not interested in anything other than one night stands; he's also Casey's roommate and her brother's best friend. Casey approaches him to give her intimacy lessons to get more comfortable with men. They have a hard time keeping their feelings separate when the lessons are supposed to come to the agreed upon end.
Sigh. Gareth tries so hard to make Casey feel special in every aspect of her life. I loved how he wanted to boost her self confidence and make her comfortable. Nix includes the voice of reason in her best friend who reiterates that "virginity" is a social construct. Although this is an important event for Casey, it's not necessarily important or relevant to everyone. It took a common trope and made it feel a little more updated. We get to visit with some of my favorite Crowder members. It made me want to go back a reread their stories. Gareth carrying Casey around in a fireman's hold over his shoulder is *chef's kiss.*
Tropes included: friends to lovers, brother's best friend, firefighter, bookworm heroine, kissing lessons, kilted hero, virgin heroine, reformed rake, small town, roommates to lovers, duel pov, forced proximity, found family, sneezing mishaps
Thank you to NetGalley, Susannah Nix, and Author Collective 20 for this eARC. All opinions expressed are my own. #netgalley #susannahnix #KiltToOrder
Susannah Nix doesn't miss! This is book one of a spinoff series from her King Family series and I'm loving it, Can't wait for future releases in both series!
Kilt To Order is the first book in a spin off series from the King brothers ice cream books, and it was DELIGHTFUL. You do not need to read the other series to enjoy this contemporary romance, either. It stands alone and is perfectly easy to follow.
Literally the only criticism that I have is that I wanted MORE Highland Games and more kilts. Casey and Gareth are adorable together, both as friends and lovers, and I just kept catching myself smiling while reading. I would like to dive into this book and hug everyone. I can’t wait to go back and read all of Susannah Nix’s other work.
