I really enjoyed this one. The narration was excellent and I found it hard to take my earphones out and stop listening to this one. The narration really added to the mood / vibe of the book.
I Did It For You tells the story of Greer, 14 years ago her sister and her sisters boyfriend were murdered. Greer and and her parents life fell apart. Her mother cleans obsessively, her father drinks obsessively and Greer escaped from small town Ludlow as soon as could to college and then on to Chicago where she now lives a sparse life. Their family has never recovered from the trauma but the killer has since received the death penalty for his crime and there is a sense of closure until a copycat murder takes place in Greer's hometown and two more teenagers are dead. This is the thing that brings Greer home. The latest double murder shows all was not as clear as they thought about what happened 14 years previously and Greer is determined to get answers.
I really liked this, the writing is strong and heart achingly beautiful at times and Greer was a good character , well developed as the book progressed. The suspense element was not the strongest part of the book as there were few characters that could have been involved so the " twist" wasn't hugely surprising, though the author does create some strong scenes that were quite tense. However this doesn't take from the story it weirdly adds to it, the sadness, the nostalgia ,the grief is so well written as is the sense of place.
This one surprised me in just how much I enjoyed it. A step above usual books in this genre and I look forward to reading more from Amy Engel.
4-4.5 stars and 5 stars for the narration, loved it.
I listened to the audio version of I Did It For You and thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrators were excellent and very clear. My only problem being Welsh and listening to an American accent was that I kept hearing Freshman Year as fresh manure! I don't really understand why they had male narrators for Travis' and Roy's chapters and in fact, I'm not even totally sure why those chapters were even included as they added little to the story, certainly Travis' anyway.
The story was gripping and the ending unexpected and rather sad.
First of all the narration is amazing!
The story is good too. Our girl has to go back to her small hometown after two teens are murdered in the same way her sister was. This happens the same time as her sister's killer is executed.
In my state you have to basically do a HiFi shop Murder spree to get the death penalty so I wasn't able to relate to that aspect but I get wanting to come home after a tragedy.
She comes home and a former boyfriend is a cop and she knows he sucks in certain ways. Is he a former boyfriend? Well guy from prom, whatever. Her two besties are still there and she is reconnecting and going to bonfires and all the things people do in small towns.
She ends up working to solve this mystery with the brother of her sister's killer. He wants redemption for his brother. She wants to make sure this doesn't happen again.
This is very emotional and it really had me thinking about the death penalty and who is hurts, meaning the families and the survivors.
In my city a man came into a home and killed the entire family, save one daughter. Later his son married the daughter. Can't judge the girl from hooking up with the boy. Trauma does stuff to us.
Write more. I need more of this.
In this story we get to know Greer Dunning. She returns to her small home town after there has been a double murder similar to that of her sister and boyfriend. But this couldn't have been the same murderer since he has been executed!
As Greer tries to find out what is going on she starts an unlikely frienship and that's what made the story for me! Her not giving a d@#% of what others might think!
This audiobook is arrated by Sean Patrick Hopkins; Amanda Stribling and Jennifer Pickens which makes it a unique listening experience
Thanks #NetGalley # Harper Collins U.K. audio for this audiobook
I Did it for You works at a number of levels. It’s a murder mystery but it’s also an exploration of relationships, families and small town America. Greer returns to her hometown, Ludlow, after an absence of some years following the murder of her sister. The killer confessed and was executed, but there’s been a similar killing.
The pace is relatively slow, but it’s intense. We see events through Greer’s eyes as she tries to make sense of what really happened the night her sister was killed and what’s happening now. Amy Engel really captured the sense of claustrophobic, small town America. As Greer arrives, she knows that the Tom toms will be beating and news if her arrival will be ahead of her. That oppressive sense of whispering and secrets pervades throughout the story and adds to the tension. More so when she catches up with the killers brother and they work together.
For me, this was a tense and compelling journey; packed with mystery, plausible characters and it kept my attention right the way through. I read the book first but found the Audible version totally engrossing. The narration throughout is superb with exactly the right sense of pace.
A dark and emotional story, a family broken after their daughter has been murdered. 14 years later, and they are all still trying to understand what happened and why. When another murder is committed in town, that is exactly the same as Eliza’s murder, Greer knows that her feelings all those years ago were right. She returns to the same town of Ludlow in Kansas to find out once and for all what happened to her sister.
This is a story of family and friendship. Of grief and moving on with life. The ending wasn’t completely unexpected and I did feel that the motivation was a bit strange, weak compared to the rest of the story. The narrators did a great job and kept me wanting to listen.
Thanks to Harper Collins UK Audio for my advanced listening copy. A great read for the most part no one that will stay with me.
This was excellent. Gripping, compelling, believable and raw.
Greer Dunning is returning to her small home town after there has been a copycat style double murder, a double murder that matched exactly that of her sister Eliza and her boyfriend when they were teenagers. As the story unfolds it’s sad, it twists and turns and my god it takes you back to when you were a teenager yourself. Caught between being an adult and definitely being a child. I was absolutely hooked. The twisty end broke my heart and left me with a dropped jaw! #Jorecommends due for release august 3rd. All 3 narrators do an excellent job in weaving the story!
