Secrets abound and no-one is to be trusted in this clever and engaging murder mystery. Police Chief Maggie Riley finds a dead body and the obvious culprit is a teenage girl. Soon after the body is discovered the girl goes missing, and it is left to Maggie to unravel the evidence to find out where she has gone and if she really is the killer. Thank you to Net Galley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing and I love that it was written from the different characters perspectives.

Unfortunately, this was a DNF. I just started listening to audiobooks recently. Wanting so badly to fall in love with them. For whatever reason I cannot focus on audiobooks. My mind keeps drifting and I miss most of what the author is trying to say. In the near future I would love to get my hands on the e-book, or the hard copy of The Girl Who Lied. This book definitely needs another chance.

I really like this book! I enjoyed the whodunit aspect along with the twists. I wasn’t completely shocked by it, but I still loved it.

I loved having a fairly competent female protagonist. Usually if the MC is a female, she is a moron running around with her head cut off. This one was not that way. So that was a major plus for me.

I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Thanks NetGalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

Whoa, this series introduction takes off like a rocket and keeps you glued in that seat until the last exciting page. I can't wait for more Maggie Riley. Definitely will be following this author.

With this book i tried reading something out of my comfort zone since I wanted to try this genre for a long time.
Well, it was good, yes. The characters are interesting, as well as their backstories. I really wanted to know what happened with Maggie, and it kept me invested in the audiobook.
What I didn´t like was that there was only one narrator reading every POV. It confuses me a lot and I personally prefer multiple narrators.

I will definitely try more books from this genre and I hope I can get into it. Probably going to listen to book 2 at some point :)

The first in a new series, The Girl Who Lied came in with a bang! This book was much darker than most of the mystery/thrillers I read but it was absolutely gripping. The twists, turns, and secrets in the book had me hooked - I genuinely was annoyed when work and sleep got in the way of me finishing the book.

Maggie Riley lives in the small town of Coyote Cove, Maine. She is the Chief of Police and many people in the town do not like that a woman has a leadership role like this. In fact, her Lieutenant - Dale Murphy - is struggling to cope with the fact that he is taking orders from her.

When walking her dogs one rainy night, she stumbles across a dead body, foul play is the cause of death. As she attempts to preserve the scene in the weather, a local teen - Heather - comes out of the woods screaming bloody murder. What do these two have to do with one another? What’s going on here in this small town?

Honestly this book had me shocked and changing theories from one second to the next. I am eager to read the next in the series.

Thank you to Net Galley and Bookouture Audio for the ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Enjoyed this immensely, and will be continuing the series !!! I’m hoping the series reveals Maggies secret as well as Steve’s eventually, I would have given this book 5 stars if we could of heard what happened in the end with heather, but again the next book may reveal this.

This book was a book that kept me guessing. I was left speechless with my jaw on the ground after the last twist. It has been a long time since that has happened for me. I listened to the audiobook and was very pleased with the way it drew me in. I felt like I knew the main characters and held out hopes for good or bad things to happen depending on who they were. You will never guess who is lying or who is telling the truth, this book keeps you guessing the whole time and it's worth it.

I am so ready for book 2 can I have it now? I love a good police drama with a dash of romance. I can't wait to see what's next!

This was a quick and easy read. Not too complex and a good overall mystery, but with a couple of loose ends. There is nothing specifically wrong with the book, the writing was easy to follow, it wasn't too thrilling (more like mildly interesting) but it was a solid 'read in one sitting book'.

A good police procedure novel with good characters. Maggie Coyote Cove's police chief comes across a body on a back road which lead to the investigation. Lots of secrets from multiple characters this seems to let's the killing take a back seat in this book. Well written and told in different viewpoints keeps this book interesting with the narrator doing an excellent job. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for letting me listen to this audiobook ARC.

Maggie is a small time town cop solving a murder and case of a missing girl. Plot and the writing style was good. If you love a good detective story, this book is a good read. Narration was okay

Absolutely loved this audiobook! The narrator did an amazing job with each of the characters and brought out their specific personalities. The story itself kept me engaged in so many different ways, it was fast paced and packed with twists and so many dark secrets. The characters were complex and you either love them, hated them, or just couldn’t figure them out! I was still thinking about it days later. I will definitely be following the series as it comes because I am hooked!

This is the first in a series featuring Police Chief Maggie Riley.

Maggie in her late 30s, is the police chief of the small town of Coyote Cove. Many in her team have trouble accepting a woman as the chief. Maggie finds a body in the woods, and a shocked 18-year-old Heather is at the scene. Lieutenant Murphy & Detective Robins join the investigation. Murphy is resentful of Maggie, and also has a regressive outlook. Maggie is in a relationship with Steve, and there are events in her past leading her to move to this small town. Maggie finds Heather very vulnerable and grows close to her, while she investigates the case.

The story is told from multiple perspectives – Maggie, Heather & Steve. The chapters are small and I found the switches too frequent. The characters develop gradually revealing secrets they hold. I found the pace quite slow especially initially, and the plot was average. I did like Maggie’s character.

Maggie Riley left the big city where she was an accomplished detective after the disappearance of her younger brother. Now she leads a quieter life as a small town police chief.

Maggie finds a body in the woods and scrambles to save the crime scene as a vicious storm approaches threatening to wash away the evidence. Then things get weirder. A teenager from town stumbles on the crime scene and Maggie. When Maggie questions what she is doing there, she knows the girl is hiding something. She just doesn't know what it is and if it has anything to do with the dead man lying at her feet.

When the same girl disappears soon after, memories of Maggie's missing brother spur her to make sure this girl is found. The more she digs into the girl's life, the more troubling discoveries she makes. Will she find her before it's too late? Is the girl really a victim or a suspect?

The narrator did nothing to help this novel. She does differ the voices for each character, but does not follow through with the same accent for the same character throughout the book. Her voice for the main character, Maggie, sounds like a mom scolding a toddler. She keeps up that angry mom voice through most of the book. It gets annoying really fast. One of the other detectives, Detective Camden, has an accent that just keeps changing. It starts out a caricature of a small town local yokul, then turns Minnesotan, only to later evolve into Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. That made the character so hard to follow.

Readers who dislike violence, child trauma, or moderately rough language should steer clear.

Despite suffering from a terrible narrator, the plot was interesting and the writing style kept me listening. I appreciated some of the interesting if creepy side characters and thought they were developed especially well. I won't go into any detail there as some of them show up late in the story and just their mention would contain spoilers and I just don't want to do that to you.

If you love a good, not too gritty, detective story, this one is for you. Just go with the printed or ebook version.

This was a great story, which I really enjoyed on audio. I was gripped from the start and found myself thinking about it when I wasn’t listening. A must read for anyone who likes a crime/thriller, I’m looking forward to the next in the series.
A strong 4.5 stars.

I really enjoyed reading this police procedural/mystery book.

The story is about Chief Maggie Riley, who I really liked. She is a strong woman, and I liked her back story.
While at work, she finds the body of a man, while a teenager called Heather appears beside her. What does Heather know about the man and what secrets is she holding? Maggie does her best to help Heather, who is traumatised and neglected by her family, but is Heather who she seems to be?

This is a great book, which I recommend highly! I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

This debut novel from Shannon Hollinger takes you on a wild ride through rural Maine where detective Riley happens upon wandering teenage girl and a dead body. She will discover if the mysteries in the woods are related or coincidence. We have dual POVs in this little thriller. That of Police Chief Maggie Riley and also we have Heater the young teenager caught up in all sorts of messes.
